It's not likely someone come across a huge tight shoal of them unless they are just free swimming fry. They generally are seen as loners mostly around other schooling fish.
|
the ones i caught were mostly 1" - 2", and they were swimming in a very tight circle, raiding the rice put as bait in the adhoc net
btw whats there max size at adulthood? |

From a trip not too long ago ...Near Tambaram, Chennai
The shoals were huuuuuge and had a fair mix of adults and juvies and wach swipe of the net would bring in hundreds!

A few Parambassis grow to a full 4". If its a ranga, its not rare to see 3" adults.
Vyas,
Not sure how such a big shoal got into Tambaram, but that's not the size of the population you probably would have come across in Kumaradhara or any other virgin biotopes.
Being fin-nipping carnivores, I don't see a reason why they should be schoalers in the wild. |

Madhu,
This location was a overflow from a local pond/reservoir.
I guess the fish were trying to get back to the main waterbody...So that would explain the "Schooling" phenomenon
I guess I wouldnt be exaggerating if I said the actual school size was much more than 10x what is on the pic! |

I don't think glass fishes hunt in packs to take down bigger prey, the way a Piranhas do. |

Definitely not impossible Vyas. But most of where I've come across around atleast half a dozen biotopes and atlest 4 different species, they were scarce and far between including Kumaradhara, Kozhikode, North Canara, Chalakkudy & few other places around Bhavani & Cauvery. |

That has been my experience as well until the Tambaram episode...I have caught these fish in many locations around south India and never seen something like this! |

As I remember we caught the chanda ranga as a loner in a huge shoal of Gambusia. |

yup, we caught three or four total, but they were all loners, as Sid mentioned, one was in a school of gambusia, the others in a drain full with other fish. I have also never encountered them anywhere in such large numbers as Vyas Photo indicates.
However, they were quite commonly offered in German LFS, so maybe they school from time to time and are then caught :-) |

yup.. that surely wouldn be an exxageration... it seemed a tough task, tryin to spot other fish amidst these..

nope.. none that we noticed.. but it sure looked like a lotta people had gone to bad hotels and got back in a hurry...
thus a lot of spots near the shallow banks of the reservoir were simply 'un accessible' |
