PostForum: Fishkeeping and Aquaristics   Posted: Mon Jan 06, 2014 11:13 pm   Subject: Question on Oscar tankmate
Hi Everyone,

From the last 1 year am keeping a few oscar fishes.
Along with them brought 2 small wild fishes also from the LFS.( they said it was albino kadango)
Now that all of them are grown up - the 2 wild fishes were always fighting, so returned one to LFS. But now the other is disturbing the oscars.

Can anyone confirm the name of the wild fish in the pic below ? And also whether they are incompatible with Oscars ?

Thanks.

Hi

One year has gone by and decided to post some new pictures.

I've learnt a lot along the way , from both day-to-day aquarium related activities and this forum.

Few points that I understood in this hobby  :

1) You need lots of patience with a planted aquarium. Obviously, soil, CO2 ( by additives method or otherwise ) and light , each have a very unique role in plants growth.

2) For good fish growth , regular partial water change is very important. It can be 10% every other day, so we somehow need to make it part of our routine. Varied diet using good quality fish food is also needed.

3) Finally, water is the most important thing in an aquarium. If its quality is maintained other things tend to fall into place.

Anyway, following are the pics, I have to improve a lot more, so any suggestions are most welcome.

Thanks,
Debraj.

Hi Deb

You have successfully won the first battle ie no algae and plants are in good health

Just few humble suggestions :-

Substrate looks quite flat . If you introduce some good drift wood or rocks that would give some interesting variation to scape.

Introduce few more plants and group the present plants as they are looking scattered. Red color plants will give interesting look.

Regards

Sanjay Dubey

Can you please provide the names of some red plants which are not difficult to grow. I dont have the provision of CO2 etc.

Will also intrdouce some wood/rocks etc.

Thanks  for the suggestion.

Other than aqua clay which is the other substrate?

Can a tank run on just Aqua Clay itself??

It was mentioned as planted soil( the black one) by the LFS.

Hi ,

Recently started an aquarium and wanted to share the pics and get people opinion on how to improve upon it. I had to depend on the LFS for supply for most part , but am slowly going through the forums and seeing how to incorporate those feedback. This site is a very useful one.

Starting week:

Hyd temp is 29 C, i don't have a heater , will add one.

I am also from Hyderabad and have seen that at night nowadays, the temperature in the aquarium water goes down, if I don't switch on the heater ( I've set to to 29 degrees C). I think a heater is a must although hyd. is generally not that cold. The heater gets switched off automatically when required, so that will ensure uniformity in temperature.

Thanks Seetharam, that confirms my suspicions.

Can anyone please PM me the brand and average price of a standard canister filter ( for a 50 gallon aquarium) so that I have a rough figure in mind when I go to the LFS to buy one (Here in Hyd. prices are usually super inflated for new-users ) ?

P.S - I intend to put plants in the aquarium.

Thanks,
Deb.

Hi ,

I am new to this hobby and have recently got an aquarium measuring ( 36*18*1Cool inches. As its 1 week old its still in cycling phase.

Thing is, the LFS, has given me a BOYU internal filter with 700l/hour capacity.

My questions are :

1) The flow of the water is very much and the little fishes ( molly, tetras) are all pushed to the side when I switch it on. I asked LFS on how to reduce the flow and they suggested to remove the air inlet( there is a pipe attached with a revolving cap). Even without it , the flow is too much. Is it at all right with that flow OR is there anyway to put some barricade in front of it ?

2) How long should I keep my filter on ? Again, as per LFS, 4 hrs a day is enough, but saw on net that it needs to be on 24 hrs/day. With this huge flow I am not sure. Can you please suggest ?

I will try to post pics soon and thanks in advance.

Thanks,
Deb
