 Tank:  8  feet  long  x  2  feet  tall  x  18  inches  depth
 Water  change:  3  times  a  week  50%
Inhabitants:  15  discus,  Has  some  plants,  3  Australian  bosemani  rainbow  fish,  green  barb  (removed  today  after  i  saw  him  chasing  discus  and  nipping  them)
Temp:  28-32C  keeps  changing  since  electricity  fluctuates  a  lot  here.

Almost  half  of  my  discus  started  having  fins  and  tail  rot...tried  salt  treatment  with  water  change  50  percent  three  times  a  week.  Tried  metrogyl  (5  days,  tetracycline  one  day  now.  No  improvement.

Should  i  dose  PP?  But  i  heard  its  bad  for  plants.  Dont  know  how  i  can  remove  or  catch  the  sick  discus  and  put  in  a  smaller  tank.  Please  help.  Should  i  dose  PP  in  main  display  tank?  or  is  there  any  other  antibiotics  to  deal  with  gram  negative  bacterial  infections?

 8  Feet  tank  ...wow......

Man  now  you  need  a  hospital  tank.

 >  Remove  all  sick  discus  to  the  hospital  tank.

 >  Go  for  salt  treatment.  100  gm.  per  100  lt.

 >  Do  the  100%  wc  and  add  salt  again.  Go  for  3  days  and  check  the  status.
If  still  not  ok  then  go  for  antibiotic  treatment  (tetracycline  -  1gm  per  100  ltr.  )  for  12  days.

Please  don't  do  the  mixed  type  of  treatment  Salt,  Metrogyl,  tetracycline,  PP  etc  etc.

Also  metrogyl  treatment  for  internal  bacteria.  I  don't  know  why  you  do  it  !!  5  days  a  long  time  and
you  fish  became  more  sick.  It  is  a  wrong  treatment.

 >  During  this  treatment  no  feeding  at  all.

Don't  try  to  put  PP  in  your  main  tank.

 Thanks  Abhis9.
I  read  online  and  used  1  tablespoon  per  10  gallon.  My  tank  is  around  160  gallons.

 Tetracycline
1gm  per  100  litre  now  i  dont  have  anything  to  measure  1gm  so  i  used  500mg  for  20  gallons.

Please  don't  try  to  treat  them  in  the  main  tank.  it's  a  huge  tank  and  it's  difficult  to  treat  there.

Bring  another  tank  2.5  or  3  ft.  where  you  can  do  the  treatment  and  also  mesure  the  volume
of  the  tank  so  that  you  can  use  the  proper  dose.

 Dear  Jamir,

I  cured  my  discus  fin  rot  through  PP  treatment  (Was  a  calculated  risk)  but  as  expert  says.  PP  has  to  be  your  last  option  as  it  may  kill  your  fish  if  treated  wrongly.  Therefore,  always  go  by  the  experts  instructions.  first  go  for  salt  treatment  as  abhida  says.  It  should  cure  it  and  if  not  refer  to  PP  treatment  (Link  of  PP  treatment  method  of  shiva  sir  is  given  above)  .  As  for  now.  go  with  huge  WC's  and  rock  salt  treatment.  But  must  admit,  PP  is  very  effective  if  treated  accurately.

Hope  your  dear  ones  will  recover  soon....!

 Best  regards,

to  catch  them  you  can  use  a  partition  glass   and  pick  them  up  1  by  1  from  1  side  of  the  tank.

Best  way  to  remove  fishes  from  a  planted  tank  is,  to  wait  till  they  gather  on  one  side  and  as  soon  as  you  get  chance  put  the  partition  glass.  Then  take  a  net  or  you  can  also  use  your  hand  as  discus  can  be  removed  by  hand  also.

Fins  and  tails  will  grow  a  little  slowly.  It  happened  as  you  said  due  to  nipping

IMO  as  long  as  they  are  with  the  fin  nippers,  they  will  not  get  well.

Their  wounds  will  become  more  tastier  after  medication,  for  the  predators  and  it  will  cause  more  harm.

Remove  them  like  the  Idea  I  gave  you  and  treat  them  back  to  normal.

The  partition  idea  gives  the  advantage  only  to  remove  the  sick  fish  also,  but  by  hand  Smile

IMO  PP  treatment  is  the  best  way  to  treat  the  condition  even  though  the  root  cause  might  be  different.  Don't  try  to  cure  the  finrot  by  PP  itself,  it  is  better  to  err  on  the  mild  side  and  use  less  PP  just  to  weaken  the  rot,  so  that  even  the  fish  can  recover  itself  provided  water  condition  is  restored.  I  mean  add  just  about  1/10th  teaspoon  per  bucket  and  stir  vigorousy  and  dip  for  about  2  min  or  shall  I  say  just  enough  PP  to  give  a  light  purple.

I  am  saying  this  because  fin  rot  can  be  diceptively  fast  sometimes  and  have  seen  it  almost  destroy  the  tail  over  night...it  happened  to  my  gold  fish  and  the  fish  is  still  recovering  since  last  one  month...it  takes  a  lot  of  time  to  re-grow  a  rot  that  almost  reached  the  base.

The  infection  had  stuck  another  goldie  and  this  time  I  used  PP  and  put  the  fish  back  in  main  tank.  The  fish  was  completely  alright  after  that.  Even  though  you  have  discus,  the  logic  is  still  the  same.

err....  I'd  say  first  isolate  them  and  use  just  salt.  I  will  post  picrures  of  2  goldies  which  Ihave  cured  and  inserted  in  my  plantedtank.

Thank  you  all  for  your  suggestions  and  advises...i  managed  to  remove  the  fish  and  they  are  in  100  lit  hospital  tank.  Did  salt,  Metro  and  weak  PP  treatment.  Two  of  them  could  not  make  it  but  the  rest  5  are  ok.  I  found  out  that  one  blue  diamond  and  another  turquoise  are  so  aggressive  and  keeps  nipping  others...so  took  out  the  meanest  one  and  put  him  in  another  tank  outside  with  nothing  except  water...he  is  still  alive....  dont  know  if  i  should  put  this  two  mean  blue  ones  back  to  display...both  of  them  looks  so  healthy  except  for  little  fin  n  tails  missing...
