Planning  to  restore  about  10  tanks  (right  now  dried  out)
What  would  be  the  best  way  to  get  rid  of  the  stains  on  glass,  without  breaking  the  bank  or  my  back?  Inputs  very  welcome

 1.  Cuttlefish  bone
 2.  Vinegar/Lemon  juice

 Hello  Hayath,

I  use  Vinegar  +  water.  Apply  it  over  the  stains  and  leave  it  for  some  20  to  30  minutes.  After  that,  just  scrub  it  with  scoth  brite  scrub.  It  works  like  a  charm.

 Regards,
 Vin

Lime  or  Vinegar  is  the  best  solution.  Use  plastic  scrubs.  Scotch  brite  may  leave  scratches

I  have  used  bleaching  powder  or  liquid  when  empty.

put  some  lime  and  leave  it  for  5  minutes  then  use  a  expired  debit  or  credit  card  to  scratch  out  the  stains.........  Thumb Up

I  could  manage  to  clear  very  tough  hard-water  stain  lines  only  with  that  acid  used  for  bathrooms.  It  did  not  need  lot  of  scrubbing  after  that.

I  used  Harpic.   The  stains  could  then  be  removed  as  easily  as  a  gentle  wipe.

 Hi,

With  credit  card  /   debit  card,  I  experienced  lot  of  scratches  on  my  tank.  May  be  use  the  card  witg  proper  inclination  while  removing  the  salt  deposits.

 Regards,
 Vin

Good  to  see  you  back  in  action!

Fill  tank  with  water  and  dump  a  bottle  of  bleach  and  let  it  soak.  Wipe  away  with  a  gloved  hand

Take  the  tank  to  a  well  ventilated  area  and  just  rub  the  glass  with  Conc.  HCl.
It  will  be  as  good  as  new  within  seconds.  No  scrubbing  required.  Later  just  rinse  the  tank.

See  how  the  bleaching  powder  works  without  any  harmfull  effects.  The  first  picture  shows  how  the  tiles  are  and  how  thick  the  stains  are.  These  will  not  go  by  Harpic  or  HCL.

Next  picture  shows  how  the  powder  is  applied.  Tomorrow  I  will  the  clean  tiles  with  plain  water  and  then  you  yourself  decide.

   its  cheaper  than  HCL  also.

See  the  difference-  I  didnt  even  scrub,  I  just  spread  the  powder  gently  on  the  surface  and  left  it  whole  night

 Guys,

Intresting   Surprised  ,  using  harpic,  HCL  and  bleaching  powder.

Will  those  not  have  any  impact  on  the  Silicone  Glue  of  the  tank?  May  be  like  burning  or  something  like  that  which  would  reduce  the  glue  density  ?
Again,  how  many  times  the  tank  has  to  be  rinsed  before  introducing  the  plants  and  the  fishes?

I  missed  out  to  mention  about  the  cuttlefish  bone  in  my  previous  response,  Cuttlefish  bone  with  Vinegar  are  the  ones  I  had  tried  so  far  and  with  good  success  rate.

 Regards,
 Vin

Thanks  a  ton  folks  for  the  inputs.Tried  the  diluted  HCl  method  -  worked  like  a  charm.

 *  Used  3  parts  of  water  to  every  part  of  HCl
 *  Moisturized  the  inner  surface  of  the  glass
 *  Used  rubber  gloves,  dipped  an  old  T-shirt  in  the  diluted  solution
 *  Wiped  over  the  inner  glass,  took  care  not  to  go  over  the  silicone,  but  I  think  Silicone  doesn't  really  react  to  this  diluted  acid
Could  see  the  deposits  go  away  instantly  -  very  few  tanks  needed  the  old  credit  card  for  the  scrub,  it  was  THAT  effective!
 *  Rinse  multiple  times  to  ensure  there's  no  trace  of  the  solution  left  behind

 Here's  a  Before/After  transformation
