I am new in Aquarium hobby. I have two 100L and 130L fresh water aquariums and they are doing fine with power filters and twice a week water change.
I am now setting up my third tank (400L), which is a marine FOWLR tank. I have got the tank installed on 24th July'08 with two side in-tank sumps and LR. The NO2- level is still to reach the desired level. I have given the hoods to my LFS for fixing PL lights (as the electrician was on leave during setting up of my tank). The water recycle is going on for last 10 days.
I am yet to introduce any Livestock in this tank. yesterday, I have put a thermometer in my tank and checked the temperature at 32 deg C.
Reading this topic on menace of high temp, I have decided to first purchase one chiller and then introduce live-stock, although my LFS is insisting to introduce 1-2 damsels.
Can anybody suggest the suitable chillers for my 400 L (75"L x 17"W x 24"H) tank keeping in view my location at Noida (summer temp may go up to 45 deg C plus)?
Although, even after purchasing chillers, during power-cut how I will be able to maintain the tank temp? Whether I have to arrange for a small gen-set for that? In our flat, we have power back-up of about 500 VA. How the other marine aquariests at NCR are managing their tanks during summer? Please suggest.

Chiller is best option but very expensive. Must if you have delicate invertebrates. You can also try following:
Place your tank in shaded area. Remember water temperature rises & falls slowly. Hence at peak hours your tank will be couple of degrees cooler than surrounding temp. You can even try exhaust fans but don't expect dramatic results like chiller. But with exhaust fans the water will evaporate faster leading to rise in specific gravity. You need to frequently top up water - some times daily.
I had tried hanging plastic ice bag in the water to lower the temperature but the experiment was not much successful.

If you are member of the Orkut community Aquarium Club Delhi, then get in touch with the owner (Arnav Jain). He and couple of his friends are using some Custom made Chiller. The famous Delhi mariner Mohit is using same kind of chiller in his 3000ltr marine tank and the temp is constant 25 degree through out. As far as I know, these chillers are same like 0.5 Ton AC.

You are right. I am the same Amit, who had a chat with you about weeks ago.
Actually, when I have talked with you, that time the tank was already delivered with LR, coral sand substrate, charcoal, protein skimmers etc. and the LFS already started preparing salt water for my tank. He generally delivers salt water (with proper salinity, pH, Nitrite etc. from his existing tanks) to the customer in no. of Mineral water jerry cans.
As per your suggestion, I have told my LFS at Noida and conveyed that I intend to go for Malawi Cichlids. But he says that it is late. I am novice in this field. But never the late, let me go for the salty adventure now. If, I burn my fingers, then I may go back to fresh water. The experience of Marine, which I will get during the process will be my reward.
Meanwhile, I am in touch with Nirav (Nash81). He suggested me about chiller and offered me to introduce to the LFS, from which he picks up the things, on any saturday. I also enquired from Aquazona exports regarding Chiller.
I am, meanwhile doing my studies through net about the chiller. I think I will decide within a week.
Thanks. It was very good to talk with you that day. Although, I have intended to dive in the salty side, but I think we can maintain a sweet friendship and keep in touch. Because, the next venture which I am getting tempted is a planted fresh water tank, for which I am sure I will get lot of help from you.

In my opinion, the best chiller that i have use is by TECO .I have use it for more than 15 years. When buying chiller, you must check whether they use titanium coil or not, this is because salt water is very corrosive. Those chiller that use plastic insulated copper piping wont stand a chance.By the way,i have also try the other brand,as i said,if you think long term, this would be a better choice.
