PostPosted: Thu Jan 29, 2009 5:48 pm Post subject: My visit to CHennai - A Narrative Reply with quote

 I  had  a  fantastic  trip  to  Chennai  and  after  being  inspired  by  the  Shaking  Spear  of  IAH  Mr.  Nayak   Very Happy   I  have  also  decided  to  try  my  hand  at  writing  a  narrative  on  my  experience  in  Chennai  with  as  many  details  as  possible,  with  help  from  all  the  other  members  who  were  in  and  around,  in  case  I  miss  something.  Here  goes...

 My  first  decision  to  make  a  visit  to  Chennai  came  after  I  read  PK's  post  on  his  auto  topper  and  water  changer  etc.,  I  am  a  very  dedicated  person  at  times  and  at  times  a  very  lazy  person  and  would  love  to  automate  as  many  things  as  possible  in  my  tank.  I  also  love  DIY's.  Purchasing  something  off  the  shelf  just  because  you  can  afford  it  is  not  very  exciting  as  trying  to  do  it  yourself  (not  if  it  is  going  to  harm  any  living  being  of  course,  like  CO2  kits).

 My  wife  went  to  my  In-laws  place  in  Mangalore  on  the  19th  of  Jan,  2009.  The  coming  weekend  was  a  boon  with  26th  Jan,  being  a  Monday  and  therefore  a  three  day  trip  to  Chennai  was  sounding  exciting  to  me.  Coincidence  had  it,  I  saw  a  post  for  "Aquarists  Meet  in  Chennai  on  11th  Jan"  I  posted  in  it  saying,  it  would  be  nice  if  another  one  (smaller  one  would  also  be  okay)  can  be  organised  in  the  24th  -  26th  Jan  weekend  so  that  I  could  meet  a  lot  of  people.  Beta  started  the  first  of  the  freindly  gesture  by  asking  the  guys  to  postpone  the  meeting  for  the  weekend  when  I  would  be  here.

 Prem  (Camy)  agreed  to  host  it  and  everything  was  set  for  my  visit  except  for  the  date,  whether  it  would  be  24th  /  25th  or  26th.  I  was  okay  with  anything.  Date  was  finalised  for  25th,  but  what  about  the  timing?  It  was  finally  finalised   Smile   a  couple  of  hours  before  I  left  to  catch  my  train  to  Chennai,  thats  another  story.

 I  was  on  waiting  list  number  15  when  I  first  booked  the  ticket  on  15th  of  Jan  and  I  see  on  the  23rd  morning  that  it  has  moved  only  up  to  11.  My  return  was  showing  Waiting  list  45,  so  I  gave  up  hope  on  that  and  cancelled  the  return  ticket.  For  the  onward  journey,  I  was  game  for  some  adventure...  either  bribe  the  TTE  or  General  Class  Zindabad.  I  reached  the  KR  Puram  station  at  10:45PM  for  my  11:20PM  Train,  which  finally  arrived  at  11:30.  Five  minutes  before,  my  wife  confirmed  to  me  that  I  was  allotted  seat  27  on  Bogie  number  A1,  well  that  ended  my  adventure  thoughts  especially  after  seeing  the  condition  General  Compartments  were  in,  if  you  had  not  boarded  in  Majestic  (Central  Station)  making  it  inside  with  the  luggage  was  also  difficult,  forget  getting  a  place  to  stand.

 Very  tired  after  work  and  the  wait,  I  fell  asleep  and  woke  up  at  4AM,  must  have  been  at  Chennai  Central  for  5  minutes.  Got  down  and  hurried  outside  to  see  Bus  No.  A1  just  standing  outside  ready  to  depart.  I  was  to  stay  at  Thirvanmiyur  with  a  friend  Chartered  Accountant  of  mine,  Narasimhan.  I  reached  Thiruvanmiyur  in  half  an  hour  and  woke  this  poor  guy  from  his  sleep  and  he  came  to  the  bus  stop  to  pick  me  up  and  rode  me  through  a  maze  of  streets  to  his  home.  I  went  to  sleep  again  at  his  house.  It  was  about  10:30AM  when  I  decide  to  make  my  first  call  for  my  first  visit  to  a  Chennai  Aquarist.  I  took  out  my  sheet  of  paper,  which  contained  the  list  of  addresses  and  phone  numbers  and  aquarists  whom  I  was  going  to  visit  during  my  three  days.

 PK  was  my  first  target,  and  we  set  up  a  meeting  at  about  2PM  on  the  25th  of  Jan.  I  had  a  bike  (Pulsar  180)  at  my  disposal  with  a  lot  of  questions  on  whether  I  would  manage  to  ride  myself  around  the  city  (though  I  have  visited  the  city  a  few  times,  it  has  always  been  guided  tours   Smile   with  friends  taking  me  around  and  was  never  on  my  own  other  than  in  an  auto  rickshaw).  To  add  to  it,  I  had  almost  stopped  riding  bikes  for  the  past  one  year  +

 I  landed  up  at  PK's  house  after  a  couple  of  calls  to  him  for  directions.  I  was  welcomed  by  a  huge  impressive  house  and  I  thought  "this  guy  must  have  quite  a  few  tanks".  It  did  turn  out  to  be  true,  but  the  only  problem  was  other  than  his  one  Marine  Tank,  all  the  other  tanks  were  empty.  He  said  it  was  okay  if  I  posted  his  tank,  but  I  will  wait  for  him  to  confirm  on  this  thread  (PK  is  it  okay?  I  have  a  couple  of  full  tank  pictures  with  so  much  coraline  algae  that  you  can  barely  see  the  dwellers  inside   Chuckle  ).  I  have  a  lot  of  macro  shots  of  his  fish  though...  one  attached  below

 I  spoke  to  him  on  various  topics,  but  of  specific  interest  was  the  use  of  floats  to  make  a  auto  topper  (though  evaporation  is  not  as  much  as  in  Chennai,  the  borewell  water  leaves  scales,  which  look  unsightly  and  are  difficult  to  clean)  and  also  a  auto  water  changer.  I  was  to  then  go  with  Bala  Kavi  to  Kolathur  if  possible  to  check  out  the  Chennai  version  of  Kolkota's  Galiff  Street  (though  not  one  street  but  a  locality).  Bala  called  me  by  4  PM  and  I  was  still  far  from  done  with  PK's  gyan  session  on  DIY's.  He  showed  and  explained  his  DIY  Skimmer  for  his  marine  tank,  which  not  only  functioned  but  also  looked  very  professional  and  cost  him  lesser  than  half  the  price  of  a  off  the  shelf.

 After  talking  to  him  about  electronics  (he  is  an  electronics  engineer)  most  of  which  went  over  my  head  and  looking  at  his  system  of  controlling  all  the  gadgets  using  a  computer  instead  of  timers  and  solenoids  and  after  having  juice  and  a  Chettinad  special  sweet,  which  I  really  loved  and  have  forgotten  the  name  after  asking  him  many  times  (PK  what's  it  called  again?)  and  after  delaying  him  for  his  meeting  twice  (which  he  postponed  for  me)  I  finally  left  to  Bala's  place.

 That  is  for  tomorrow  and  two  more  days  of  story  to  come...  feed  back  please,  awaiting  replies  like  our  Old  Newbiew  used  to  wait  for.

 @Ranjitpai...  Thanks  buddy

 @Aquarist,  thanks  thats  a  lot  of  encouragement

 @Shankar,  did  not  manage  to  meet  you,  but  thanks  for  the  encouragement  and  let  us  know  the  result  of  the  competition

 @Pree;  You  should  try  and  visit  Bangalore  also  before  that  and  then  proceed  to  Chennai,  we  are  all  friendly

 @PK:  I  have  no  Marine  Tank  photos  that  look  like  aquariums,  so  no  worries,  I  only  have  the  macros  of  your  fishies  and  live  rocks  behind  that.  Some  of  yours  some  of  Venkats.  nice  fishes  though.  Both  of  you  had  so  much  of  the  coraline  algae  on  your  tank,  nothing  in  the  tanks  visible,  other  than  some  macro  shots.  Same  is  the  case  with  venkats  tank  also.  Thanks  for  the  kolakattai  and  do  carry  some  when  you  visit  Bangalore   Thumb Up

 @Seetharam:  Thanks

 @Sriram:  Thanks  for  the  title,  but  I  dont  think  it  will  stick...  The  bada  Nayak  has  not  yet  replied  yet  though   Confused??:

 @Sai,  I  never  caught  that,  Mr.  Trevor  continuous  to  be  amazing  with  his  sense  of  humour

 PK  gets  a  lot  of  his  stuff  using  his  contacts  as  a  builder,  which  I  cannot  do  as  I  am  not  a  builder   Very Happy   Somethings  that  PK  DIY's  himself,  like  being  a  builder  cannot  be  replicated  by  me   Chuckle  .  After  a  few  hours  of  electronic  gyan,  after  which  I  felt  the  rest  would  go  above  my  head  without  even  grazing  my  hair,  I  thought,  I  better  head  to  the  nice  dinner  that  was  awaiting  me  at  Bala's  place.

 I  had  complimented  Bala  on  his  tank  and  had  taken  the  opportunity  to  invite  myself  to  his  house.  He  beat  me  at  this  and  went  a  step  further  and  offered  me  Dinner,  so  how  could  I  miss  this?  Bala  lives  at  Virugambakkam  which  is  the  opposite  end  of  Chennai  for  me  from  where  I  stayed,  for  Bangaloreans  it  is  like  travelling  from  Adip's  house  to  Umesh's  house  (for  all  who  came  to  the  meet  at  Umesh's  place).  I  rode  3/4th  of  the  way  after  which  he  had  come  along  with  his  son  to  ensure  that  I  dont  get  lost  in  the  smaller  gully's.  We  reached  his  apartment  by  7:30  PM  and  what  greets  you  in  his  living  area  is  his  4  footer  with  only  his  Paradise  breeding  couple  and  their  fry's  and  eggs.  It  is  an  ADA  tank  and  is  lush  green.  Kavitha  (Mrs  Bala)  is  a  hard  core  Bangalorean  who  loves  Chennai  as  any  other  Bangalorean  would  love   Chuckle  She  is  very  interested  in  the  hobby  up  to  the  point  when  the  fishes  start  to  breed...  after  that  she  doesnt  like  that  fish  anymore,  we  will  await  Bala's  explanation  for  that   Very Happy   (I  hope  I  am  not  giving  away  too  much  of  internal  confidential  information).  He  also  has  a  bare  bottom  tank  with  a  few  cardinals  and  a  few  other  fishes.

 Then  came  the  lovely  dinner.  After  the  first  round  of  serving,  I  told  Kavitha,  that  I  would  help  myself   Innocent  The  strategy  behind  this  was,  now  that  I  realised  the  food  was  so  good,  it  would  be  more  embarassing  to  go  ask  for  so  many  helpings,  that  could  be  avoided  when  you  served  yourself.  Rohan  their  cute  kid,  was  so  playful  and  energetic,  until  dinner  time,  after  which  even  I  listened  to  Humpty  Dumpty  and  so  many  more  rhymes  that  were  essentially  side  dishes  for  Rohan.   Bow  Thanks  Kavitha  for  the  awesome  food  and  the  Bala  couple  for  being  such  wonderful  hosts  to  a  complete  stranger.  And  please  do  visit  me  whenever  you  are  in  Bangalore.  I  will  make  sure  I  stock  Humpty  Dumpty  rhymes  by  then,  I  anyway  have  to  do  so  by  June  09,  when  my  wife  returns.  I  was  relatively  free  Sunday  morning  as  the  meet  was  in  the  evening  and  Bala,  called  up  Venket  to  find  out  if  the  Software  Entrepreneur  would  have  some  time  to  spare,  another  friendly  Chennai  aquarist,  he  agreed  and  we  agreed  that  2PM  was  a  good  time  to  reach  Bala's  house  the  next  day,  after  which  we  would  go  together  to  Venket's  house  and  then  to  Prem's  house  for  the  meet.  With  everythng  in  order  for  the  next  day,  Bala  then  dropped  me  off  to  a  main  road  and  gave  me  a  descriptive  narration  of  the  direction  which  I  had  to  take  to  get  back  to  my  friend's  place.  I  had  a  long  chat  with  Narasimhan  and  his  wife  Sowmya  on  topics  from  Satyam  to  Singing,  slept  late  and  in  anticipation  of  the  next  day  which  would  bring  the  much  awaited  CHENNAI  AQUARISTS  MEET.

 Some  photos  of  the  paradise  fish  of  Bala  and  the  bubble  nest  too.  Rest  I  guess  will  be  on  Monday,  as  my  laptop  is  having  a  little  problem  with  connecting  with  the  broadband  at  home.  So  until  them  Bon  Weekend.  Aurevoir.

 The  Bubble  nest  and  the  fries

 The  parenting  was  amazing  to  see  in  fishes  also.  I  saw  the  father  gobble  up  a  fry  and  told  Bala,  that  he  must  try  and  get  the  fry  out  into  another  tank  and  to  my  utter  astonishment,  it  goes  to  one  corner  of  the  tank  and  lets  the  fry  out.

 This  was  the  first  time  I  saw  a  bubble  nest.  I  told  Bala,  that  the  water  had  become  too  frothy,  and  then  he  told  me  what  it  was...  bubble  nest.  On  close  examination,  I  was  amazed  at  the  creation.  Until  now  it  was  only  live  bearers,  snails  and  leeches  that  have  spawned  in  my  tank   Chuckle

 That  is  all  from  Leechman's  Chennai  visit  for  the  week.  You  have  a  pleasant  evening  and  a  pleasanter  weekend.  If  you  feel  I  have  overstepped  my  limits  in  some  of  my  narration,  I  apologise  and  let  me  know,  so  that  I  can  edit  my  post.

 Cheers  Drinking

 PS:  Loads  of  Diatoms  in  my  tank,  and  also  hair  algae  has  entangled  the  HM,  I  can  use  it  as  a  fishnet  now.  Had  put  a  lone  female  guppy  today.  The  tank  has  been  cycling  for  two  weeks  almost  now.  Had  put  the  guppy  to  test  the  waters  today  morning.  After  waiting  for  the  whole  day,  my  mom  just  called  me  to  tell  me  that  the  Guppy  had  gone  for  an  evening  walk  and  my  mom  just  found  her  put  her  back  in  her  place.  Dont  know  how  well  the  guppy  is  doing  or  the  reason  for  her  going  for  the  walk.

   I  see  a  lot  of  work  for  the  weekend     Sad
