 Hi  friends,

can  you  please  suggest  if  I  can  keep  two  red  tail  sharks  with  my  2  apple  snails,  2  sword  tails  and  1  rosy  barb  in  17  gallons?

also,  what  other  species  could  I  research  to  live  with  these???

The  tank  was  set  up  after  disinfecting  last  week...

I  think  this  is  the  fish  you  are  referring  to
 http://badmanstropicalfish.com/profiles/profile10.html

If  yes,  having  two  in  a  tank  of  this  size  might  not  be  a  good  idea.
For  one  they  grow  large  and  they  fight  among  themselves  too  much,  the  smaller  fish  will  be  chased  to  no  end.
In  my  50  g  tank  with  lots  of  hiding  places  one  would  always  get  beaten  up.  However  when  I  separated  them  it  was  okay.
After  this  they  lived  with  me  long  nearly  3  years  grew  quiet,  before  being  given  away

 Ohhh...  kay!

I  do  not  want  a  fish  that  I  have  to  give  away..I  want  to  keep  manageable  sizes..
I  read  at  a  site  that  it  grows  to  a  max  5  inches.  That  is  why  I  considered  it..

I  want  active  but  peaceful  fish..  What  other  species  would  you  suggest?

You  guided  me  to  a  website..  Forgot  its  url.  Will  hunt  for  it  today  and  check  out  the  possible  options..

Also,  the  tank  is  a  week  old.  I  will  change  30%  water  tonight.  Would  it  be  okay  for  me  to  start  adding  fish  @  say  2  per  week?

 Thanks.

Kapil,  dont  add  anything  for  next  one  or  two  weeks.  I  know  its  hard  to  resist,  but  be  patient  and  add  a  pair  in  the  fourth  week.  I  have  followed  this  basic  rule  and  have  had  no  fish  deaths  due  to  partly  cycled  tanks.

 Thanks  Deepak..

yes,  temptation  is  too  much..  including  of  my  wife  who  wanted  to  buy  some  15  fish  in  one  go  when  we  got  the  tank  BUT  we  will  follow  the  advice  you've  given..

Meanwhile,  I  can  use  my  time  to  research  some  beautiful  ones  that  I  may  want  to  keep.

 Cheers!

I  stick  to  a  basic  rule  made  by  me,  for  me.  Very Happy
Day  1-  set  up  a  tank.
Day  3-  put  in  a  pair-
 Day  20-25-  add  another  pair.
After  that  one  pair  each  15  days,  till  tank  is  fully  stocked.
It  has  worked  for  me  so  far,  may  or  may  not  work  for  everybody.  Thumb Up
Meanwhile  25  %  water  change  every  week.

Thanks  Sandeep...  your  advice  has  always  saved  the  day  for  me..

I  hope  one  day  I  will  be  in  a  position  to  advice  others  in  the  group  rather  than  only  asking  questions..

after  the  last  tank  clean-up,  I  have  had  1  rosy  barb  and  2  swordtails  and  2  apple  snails  since  day  1  since  they  were  already  there  before  the  cleanup..

Plan  to  continue  this  until  4  weeks  and  will  introduce  1  pair  each  week  for  a  total  of  15-16  small  fish...

I  do  upto  40%  water  change  every  friday...  I  hope  night  is  a  reasonable  time  to  change  water  and  does  not  disturb  the  fish..

 Cheers!

 Sound  good.
Just  keep  us  posted  on  your  fish  selection.
Livebearers,  mollies,  platies,  swordtails  are  good  additions  to  your  tank.
They  come  in  wide  variety  of  colours,  very  hardy,  also  they  breed  very  easily.

 Hi  Sandeep  &  friends..

This  is  to  share  the  fish  I  plan  to  keep  in  my  17/18  G  tank..  It  has  2  sword  tails,  1  rosy  barb  and  2  apple  snails..

I  plan  to  add  Guppys,  Neon  Tetras,  Cherry  barbs,  either  one  or  three  more  rosy  barbs,  a  few  tiger  barbs  and  Zebra  danios  (and  something  called  Red  zebra  by  LFS)..

Is  this  a  good  combination??  Also,  what  do  you  feel  is  the  right  number  of  each  fish  to  keep?

 Cheers!

Hey  Kapil,  keep  out  the  tiger  barbs.  They  are  fin  nippers.  Danios  are  great.  The  'red'  mentioned  by  LFS  may  be  really  a  pink  danio.  Rest  seem  to  be  fine.  Why  do  you  go  for  too  many  Rosies?  You  would  get  bored  with  them.  I  had  kept  them  once  and  found  that  they  ate  all  the  food  and  the  other  fishes  were  just  looking  at  me  to  feed  them  more   Surprised

Rosy  barbs  were  my  first  fish..  I  still  have  one  from  that  lot  left..
I  feel  they  have  quite  a  personality  irrespective  of  the  size  and  more  responsive  than  a  lot  of  fish  I  have  seen...  I  will  eventually  have  either  2  or  4  of  these.

Even  now,  the  Rosy  barb  have  is  the  leader  of  the  pack  when  it  comes  to  food,  play  anything  at  all..

I  have  two  swordtails..  So,  not  too  interested  in  mollies/platys..  though  the  swordtails  look  quite  beautiful.

Tiger  barbs  if  kept  in  a  school  of  6  or  more  are  not  such  fin  nippers  and  keep  to  their  group..  So,  I  am  planning  6-8  of  them..

Any  suggestion  on  the  max  no.  of  these  kind  of  fish  to  keep  in  a  long  (3  feet)  20G  tank  that  can  hold  18G  of  water..?

 Cheers!

Exactly.  that  is  why  the  other  fishes  kind  of  suffer  when  it  comes  to  food.  I  once  kept  2  of  them  in  my  tank  but  returned  them  just  because  of  this  food  thing.  Put  the  food  and  zoom  its  all  taken  by  this  rosy  Smile  I  liked  their  personality  as  you  say.  I  said  'bored'  because  they  look  like  regular  fishes  and  are  not  very  ornamental  or  exotic.  A  better  looking  cousin  is  the  'tinfoil'  but  they  grow  so  fast  hence  not  suitable  for  the  regular  3-4  feet  aquariums.

For  max  fishes,  here  is  a  practical  answer.  There  is  really  no  maximum  as  long  as  you  can  afford  to  do  frequent  water  changes  and  the  aquarium  does  not  look  like  its  crowded  (just  a  perception).  Some  may  not  agree  but  I  have  been  OK  with  30-40  fishes  in  my  30  gallon  with  once  or  seldom  twice  30%  water  change  per  week  as  I  feel  appropriate.

With  whatever  you  keep,  just  make  sure  none  of  the  fish  keep  hiding  all  the  time  or  is  constantly  been  chased  by  another  species.  That's  stress  to  the  poor  fish  which  you  do  not  want  to  give.  If  so,  there  is  no  problem  with  fish  count  and  mixing  fishes.

BTW  got  this  nice  page  for  fishes  that  can  go  with  the  tiger  barb  in  a  community:  http://www.elmersaquarium.com/c106community5barbs.htm

Let  us  know  what  you  finally  settled  with.
