 Hi  All,

I  happened  to  pick  up  a  Boyu  Mt-50  tank  and  they  are  presently  being  inhabited  by  2  RBP's.  Pictures  to  follow  soon.  However  here  is  my  question:  Its  an  80  liter  tank  so  was  wondering  if  it  would  be  spacious  enough  for  2  RBP's  to  live  harmoniously  together.  Also  I  intend  to  feed  them  with  Tetrachichlid  and  ¬†GHM;  is  that  fine  or  should  i  supplement  their  diet  with  something  else  ?

 Cheers,
 Nikhil

 Hiya

Last  time  i  checked  it  was  'illegal'  to  hold  any  'imported'  species  of  fish  in  aquariums  Very Happy...but  i  may  be  wrong  too  so  not  quite  sure  about  there  'illegality'  per  se.

Umm,  picked  them  from  a  local  LFS  in  Thane  for  what  i  reckon  is  a  decent  price  too.  And  as  far  as  the  party  is  concerned,  come  on  over  any  time  for  some  Chivas  and  fishy  talk  Razz

Those  are  pacus  and  they  grow  twice  the  size  of  your  tank.  They  arent  fishes  for  a  regular  hobbyists,  you  need  atleast  a  1000liter  tank/pond  to  keep  them  happy.

Better  give  them  off  right  now,  once  they  grow  over  a  foot,  even  your  LFS,  who  sold  them  to  you  will  not  take  them  back  and  you'll  end  up  throwing  them  into  our  native  waters  out  of  sheer  frustration.

Sorry  if  I  sounded  harsh,  but  think  over  it  seriously.  You  can  have  a  lovely  little  planted  setup  in  that  tank.

And  resize  your  pictures  to  800px  wide.

Try  to  observe  the  lower  jaw  and  compare  to  what  you've  got.  Piranhas  have  a  thick  strong  lower  jaw  that  hangs  out  a  little,  made  for  chopping  off  anything.

Damn,  they  do  look  ridiculously  similar.  My  bad,  should  have  done  a  bit  more  research.  However  do  you  think  the  above  mentioned  tank  upgrade  would  suffice  for  two  of  these?

They  are  known  to  grow  upto  a  meter  in  wild  and  around  2-2.5  feet  in  tanks.  So  I  dont  think  it  will  be  sufficient.
Pacus  are  seemingly  boring  fishes  with  no  color  or  appeal,  not  even  attitude.  Whats  the  point  of  providing  them  with  large  tanks,  filtration,  maintenance  and  food  and  all  those  expenses?

the  easiest  way  to  distinguish  a  pacu  and  a  piranha  at  those  size  is
pacu  face  looks  like  a  chubby  cheeked  kid
where  as  piranha  don't  look  like  a  chubby  cheeked  kid

 and  pacus  taste  good

if  by  chance  you  do  pick  up  piranhas,  note  the  following

keeping  RBPs  in  such  a  tank  would  be  bad  idea,  as  piranhas  don't  live  in  pairs,  you  will  end  up  with  one  very  soon,  as  piranhas  are  best  kept  in  groups  else  keep  only  one  in  a  tank

when  juvenile  piranhas  are  quite  skittish  and  will  need  rocks  and  other  such  decor  to  hide.
only  once  they  grow  and  get  some  size  on  them,  do  they  show  the  aggression.

the  red  belly  piranhas  get  to  niice  size  of  8"  or  so,  thus  the  tank  you  are  keeping  might  not  suffice.

 Hhaha  Great  pointers...Noted...

The  Boyu  was  always  going  to  be  a  temporary  arrangement  like  i  pointed  out  before.  Already  earmarked  a  6  footer  18*18  for  them.  Anyways  guess  I  am  going  to  be  sticking  to  the  pacus.  They  do  seem  unusually  aggressive  considering  their  "docile'  nature.  They  keep  banging  the  acrylic  and  literally  jump  and  take  the  GHM  off  my  hand  when  i  feed  them  and  flatly  refuse  any  sort  of  veggies.

My  significant  other  has  actually  eaten  a  Pacu  during  her  trip  to  the  Amazonia(Brazilian  part)  so  although  I  am  not  contemplating  eating  it  ..yet...I  will  always  have  to  bear  that  in  mind  Wink
