is there any alternate fertilizer to ferka root tabs 9or any other company)? i dont use any dosing in my 5' tank so dosing in the water column is out. the laterite at the bottom seems to have lost al its potential. |

Correct me if Im wrong guys. Laterite does have some nutrients when you start out with it. The main reason it is used in the aquarium is because of its clay content which acts as an Ion exchanger and so, retains nutrients from the water column as well. So in order to rejuvinate your laterite, dosing the water column is a good thing |

Laterite is used mainly for iron substitution for root feeders.
Clay works in the way you said-ion exchange.
Dosing the water column still would not be a substitute for root feeders. |

Hi
There are many options available, Ferka, Ocean Free, Sera, Red Sea. What is the deficiency you are facing or is it slow growth rate. How did you judge that your laterite has lost all its potential. Adding roots tabs unnecessary could cause an algae boom. One of the main reasons i quit my planted hobby. I had used Ocean Free root sticks and my tank went for a toss after that. Basis other hobbyist feedback that i have heard or spoken is Ferka fertilizers are truly good.
Cheers

i wanted to use them for my crypts. very slow growth. since they are heavy root feeders therefore i though of using the root tabs. but i was looking for something cheaply available. nothing branded. otherwise i would use ferka. |

You might try out some DIY fertz in clay balls that can be buried in the substrate.
One of the links I could get online:
http://www.aquaticplantcentral.com/forumapc/fertilizing/10488-how-make-diy-substrate-fertilizer-sticks.html
If you use branded capsules like Ferka just under the area where you have the root feeders(which is how I would suggest it to be done) it would be most optimally used and save on cost too. Finally ofcourse its your choice.
If you follow the path of DIY pellets, do post the method and results, we can learn and other members might be able to optimize and also use it.
Good luck |
