My  gold  fish  tank  has  an  outbreak  of  parasite  (i  think).  There  is  small  white  thread  like  ting  attached  to  the  body  of  fish,  the  free  end  is  split  into  two.  The  area  where  the  thing  is  attached  to  the  fish  is  red  and  fish  has  not  eaten  for  days  and  just  staying  on  the  bottom  of  the  tank.
I  have  not  added  any  fish  or  anything  to  the  tank  for  the  last  2  months.  Only  new  thing  which  comes  to  the  tank  is  the  weekly  water  change  (about  30%).
Can  any  one  tell  me  how  the  outbreak  happened?  can  it  come  from  decomposed  fish  food  or  fish  waste  or  it  has  to  come  from  outside?  But  if  from  outside,  the  only  source  is  the  water.
Any  does  any  one  knows  what  is  it?  Right  now  I  am  putting  blue  to  the  water  (basically  ich  medicine).

Yep,  that  is  the  one.  Thanks,  looks  like  it  might  have  came  with  the  fish  when  I  bought  it  few  months  ago.

Thats  anchor  worm.  You  can  either  pull  it  out  manually  using  a  tweezer  or  use  anchor  worm  medicine.  I  have  used  Parazin  P  by  Waterlife  in  past  and  it  worked  really  well.  Methylene  blue  wont  work  IMO.

The  reason  could  be  strees  due  to  poor  water  conditions.  Fishes  are  more  prone  to  parasitic  infections  when  they  are  under  stress.  How  big  is  your  tank?  filteration?  live  stock?

I  check  the  water  every  week  for  Nitrate.  I  keep  it  always  about  10  and  after  water  change  it  will  come  to  5.
When  the  outbreak  started,  I  was  out  of  country.  When  i  came  back  after  3  days  I  saw  this  worms.  I  checked  the  water  parameters  immediately  and  all  of  them  where  normal.
 Ammonia  ----  0
 Nitrite  --------  0
 Ph  ------------  7.5
 Nitrate  --------  10
This  tank  is  40L  BOYU  tank  with  over  head  filter.  I  has  particle,  carbon  and  biological  filter  for  this  tank  on  the  overhead.  I  have  2  angel  fish  2  molly  fish  in  it.
Since  you  mentioned  the  water  quality,  I  found  when  I  am  cleaning  the  gravel  two  weeks  ago,  I  found  lots  of  mess  in  the  gravel,  like  non  decomposed  poop  or  uneaten  food.  But  my  water  parameters  remain  normal  like  Ammonia.
So  I  had  a  feeling  that  things  are  not  decomposing  fast  enough  in  the  tank.
But  I  assume  this  parasite  was  there  in  the  fish  from  the  beginning  when  I  got  it.  (about  3  months  ago).  Only  thing  is  it  just  surfaced  now.  Or  is  it  caused  by  the  water  quality?  What  do  you  think  the  source  is?

 Hello  Harish,

When  you  have  goldfish  you  are  bound  to  have  poop  all  over  the  place...  I  get  astonished  seeing  the  amount  of  Edit  I  siphon  out  every  time  I  do  a  WC  for  my  goldfish  tank  every  3  days....They  are  like  that  by  nature...Well  to  be  frank  since  its  goldfish  its  advisable  to  have  WC's  probably  twice  a  week....because  thats  how  I  do  it...Its  just  a  suggestion...

And  about  the  anchor  worm...Theres  nothing  really  to  get  stressed  about...Its  very  common  in  goldfish...I  usually  get  anchor  worm  each  time  I  introduce  a  new  goldfish  into  the  tank...But  since  you  claim  that  you  dint  introduce  anything  into  the  tank...It  could  very  well  be  that  it  was  carrying  it  when  you  bought  it  the  first  time...You  simply  have  to  pluck  out  the  anchor  worm  with  a  tweezer  or  your  hand...It  usually  just  plucks  off  when  you  pull  it...Have  done  it  several  times...And  I  really  doubt  if  anchor  worm  is  lethal  to  the  fish...Its  never  happened  in  my  case...

 Hi  Aroopnath,
What  is  the  treatment/medicine  you  used.  I  found  my  fish  is  too  week  and  one  gold  fish  is  belly  up  and  looks  like  going  to  die  soon.  The  other  one  and  2  molly  fish  are  staying  at  the  bottom  for  the  last  4  days.
I  tried  "yellow"  medicine,  then  "blue"  and  finally  Potassium  permaginate  to  treat  it.  Looks  like  I  managed  to  kill  the  fish  not  the  worms  by  the  medication.  Worms  are  still  there.

 Hey  Harish,

Ideally  for  anchor  worm  I  usually  do  not  use  any  medicine...Some  of  the  experts  recommended  pulling  out  the  anchor  worm  and  then  apply  potassium  permanganate  on  it...But  even  if  a  small  speck  of  Potassium  permanganate  falls  on  the  gills  they  are  toast...So  I  usually  just  pull  out  the  anchor  worm...And  if  the  goldfish  is  swimming  belly  up  its  usually  swim  bladder  disease...I  would  suggest  you  not  to  feed  the  goldfish  for  a  while...or  else  feed  it  very  very  small  amout  of  food...Usually  when  you  feed  excess  food  they  get  swim  bladder  disease...They  say  if  you  put  boiled  pease  it  helps  the  goldfish...Dunno  if  it  helps...But  just  keep  an  eye  on  the  fish...if  they  dont  come  looking  at  you  for  food...just  dont  feed  them  too  much  till  they  are  back  to  normal....

Heres  some  of  the  posts  that  I  had  raised  when  I  had  similar  problems  like  yours:

 Hi  Harish,

Maybe  fish  carried  infection  from  LFS  from  where  you  got  it.  Pulling  out  this  worm  by  tweezer  &  dipping  fish  in  mild  PP  solution  may  help.  You  can  try  getting  Dimilin  powder  from  nearby  vet  store  &  treat  the  infected  fish.  In  case  you  don't  get  it,  ask  for  Japanese  Yellow  Powder  at  Aakar  (Kurla)  for  the  treatment.  Otherwise,  you  can  procure  special  medicines  for  Anchor  Worm  treatment  from  companies  like  Waterlife,  OceanFree  etc.

If  you  are  sure  entire  tank  has  outbreak  of  these  worms/parasites,  its  better  to  nuke  tank  with  PP.

 Hi  Aroopnath,
Boiled  deshelled  peas  are  fed  to  goldies  in  case  of  constipation  problem.

About  gold  fish  defecating  too  much,  it  might  be  due  to  over-feeding.

About  the  anchor  worm:  From  my  (very  limited)  knowledge,  most  of  these  problems  go  away  when  you  just  get  a  heater  (thermostat)  and  keep  a  slightly  warm  water  temperature  for  a  few  days.  (Adding  Aquarium  salt  might  also  be  a  good  idea.)

Code:

I  checked  the  water  parameters  immediately  and  all  of  them  where  normal.
 Ammonia  ----  0
 Nitrite  --------  0
 Ph  ------------  7.5
 Nitrate  --------  10

I  had  asked  this  question  as  my  1st  or  2nd  post  on  IAH.  Where  do  you  get  the  kits  to  measure  these  parameters  and  what  is  the  approximate  cost?

 Thanks  guys,
My  water  temperature  is  about  32  degree,  that  is  why  I  did  not  put  any  heater  though  I  have  one.
My  entire  tank  is  infected  now  and  hence  yesterday  I  nuked  it  with  PP  (80mg  for  my  40L  tank  for  1/2  hour).  After  that  also  I  see  the  worms  attached  to  the  fish.
I  plucked  the  worms  from  one  gold  fish  yesterday  after  the  PP  treatment  and  that  fish  died  yesterday.
So  I  did  not  touch  the  other  fishes.

Sorry,  since  you  ask  the  question  at  the  bottom  I  have  never  noticed  it.  Initially  I  bought  Ammonia  and  Nitrite  kit  from  indiapetsore.com.  But  later  I  bought  the  entire  kit  from  London  when  I  was  there.  It  was  API's  kit  consist  of  Ammonia,  Nitrite,  Nitrate,  Ph  and  High  value  Ph.  It  cost  me  about  XXXX  Rs.  Since  it  is  API,  it  is  much  cheaper  in  US,  1/2  the  cost.

Just  a  quick  question....  did  you  nuke  the  tank  with  fish  in  it  or  with  out  them?

I  nuke  it  with  fish  in  it.  What  I  understood  from  reading  is  that  treat  the  entire  tank  with  PP  for  1/2  hour.  Dose  was  2mg  for  liter.

Surprised  ¬†why  did  you  nuke  with  the  fish  in  it?  How  many  fishes  were  in  it  when  you  nuked?  Just  the  one  that  died  later  on  or  all  of  them?
