 Hi  guys,

I  have  a  breeding  pair  of  goldfishes  with  me.  I  bought  them  from  a  LFS  when  they  were  really  small.  I  would  say  the  smallest  size  available  in  the  trade.  When  I  bought  them  I  thought  that  they  are  Ranchu.  Though  the  LFS  never  made  any  claim  like  that  and  it  was  my  judgement.

Now  they  have  grown  and  I  think  one  can  make  out  if  they  are  Rancu  or  Lionchu.  Please  help  me  decide  by  looking  at  the  pics  below:

I  had  an  awesome  looking  ranchu  till  a  few  weeks  back.  He  died  from  a  Swim  Bladder  Infection.  I  also  have  two  other  ranchus,  but  they  are  "rescued"  from  the  LFS  and  are  still  reeling  from  the  effects  of  being  in  an  overcrowded  tiny  tank  at  the  LFS.

 Good  luck  with  your  goldfish,

 Sid

Ranchus  can  best  be  identified  with  their  downward  curved  backs  &  shorter  tails  with  missing  dorsal-fin,  both  of  them  are  Ranchus.
 Beautiful  pair.  Thumb Up

 1.  Lionchus,  as  the  name  suggests,  is  a  cross  between  Lionhead  Goldfish  and  Ranchus.

 2.  Ranchu's  are  characterized  by  Absence  of  Dorsal  Fin,  Curved  Back,  (premium  varieties  have)  an  exact  45%  angle  of  the  tail  from  the  "tangent"  to  the  curved  back.  Head-growth  exists,  but  is  overshadowed  in  prominence  by  the  "cheek-growth"  giving  the  Ranchu's  a  "Buffalohead"  (or  rather  Buffalo-face)

 3.  Lionhead  goldfish  also  do  not  have  Dorsal  Fin,  but  (good  ones)  have  a  relatively  straight  Back.  Head  growth  is  more  prominent  over  the  other  scales  around  the  face.

A  Lionchu  should  be  identifiable  as  a  specimen  with  a  curved  back  (but  not  as  curved  as  a  Ranchu)  and  more  prominent  head-growth  over  cheeks.

So,  in  the  pics  above,  the  one  labeled  "female"  is  definitely  a  Ranchu.  The  one  labeled  "male"  seems  more  like  a  Lionchu.  But  as  you  can  see,  it's  all  a  bit  subjective.

A  perfect  ranchu  has  a  perfectly  curved  back.  So  how  do  you  differentiate  between  an  "imperfect"  ranchu  and  a  Lionchu..

(I  will  post  a  frontal  pic  of  my  ranchu  to  further  explain  the  "cheek-growth"  (or  Buffalo-head)  part.

 Regards,
 Sid

Shankar,  beta,  yogoranda,  crazyfishy,  shishirkamat,  all:  tanks  a  lot  guys...

Sid:  Thanks  for  the  details;  will  look  forward  to  you  post.  Also  what  did  you  do  to  treat  the  swim  bladder  problem.  Please  share.  My  female  ranchu  seems  to  be  facing  swim  bladder  problem.

So  the  dilemma  still  exists...  and  now  my  goldfish  is  something  between  a  lionchu  and  ranchu...   Sad

Also,  friend  i  havent  seen  many  rancus  in  Delhi/  NCR  (if  you  know  someone  who  has  them  now  and  is  selling  please  PM  me).  Is  this  trend  same  across  the  country.  Because,  outside,  they  are  the  most  talked  about  goldfishes  i  guess.

 Hi  Keshava,

Feed  your  gold  fish  some  boiled  peas  and  spinach  for  the  swim  bladder  problem.  Make  sure  to  remove  the  outer  shell  of  the  peas  before  feeding.

I  bought  my  Ranchu's  by  accident.  I  picked  2  out  of  4  of  them  in  a  LFS  in  Bombay  (Chembur).  One  of  the  remaining  two  in  the  LFS  died  and  I  bought  the  last  one  because  the  LFS  guy  was  not  treating  him  right  (he  was  stunted  and  looked  really  skinny).

Outside  of  this  one  instance,  I  have  never  seen  Ranchus  at  any  of  the  major  outlets/markets  in  Bombay.  I  have  no  idea  why...

As  for  your  other  question:  Swim  Bladder  disease:

 1.  Symptoms:  Fish  unable  to  maintain  depth.  Basically  floats  around  with  little  or  no  control  over  depth/direction.

 2.  Immediate  Causes:  Bad  Water  Quality  OR  Trauma  OR  genetic  disorder  OR  Bacterial  Infection  OR  Indigestion.

 3.  Cure:  If  this  is  due  to  trauma  or  genetic  disorder,  it  is  incurable.  (People  try  strange  stuff  like  puncturing  the  swim-bladder  with  a  sterilized  needle  etc.  I  don't  think  this  works  and  might  only  add  to  the  fish's  trauma).  If  it's  due  to  bad  water  quality  or  infection  or  improper  diet,  it  can  be  cured  by  the  common  means.  (i.e  Water  changes,  Antibiotics,  starvation  (plus  feeding  peas))

 4.  Comments:  In  gold-fish,  9  of  10  times  Swim  Bladder  disease  is  due  to  a  genetic  disorder.  Gold  fish  were  designed  by  evolution  to  look  like  other  (elongated)  fish,  kinda  like  Koi  (or  Common  Goldfish/Carps  etc).  "Fancy"  goldfish  were  selectively  bred  to  be  more  spherical  rather  than  elongated..  so  while  the  outside  of  an  Oranda,  Ryukin  or  Ranchu  might  look  spherical,  it's  internal  organs  are  still  designed  to  fit  in  a  elongated  body.  Sooner  or  later,  this  leads  to  disorder  of  the  Swim  Bladder  which  the  fish  used  to  maintain  buoyancy  in  water  i.e.  the  Swim  Bladder  disease.

 Cheers,
 Sid

Gaurav:  thanks  for  your  valuable  comments

Sid:  thanks  for  the  detailed  descriptions.

The  ranchu  (Or  lionchu   Sad  )  seems  to  be  doing  better  now.  Though  not  perfectly  not  all  right.  However  i  haven't  tried  the  pea  thing  yet.  I  just  did  not  feed  it  for  a  day  as  i  read  a  few  web  sites  recommending  so.   I  just  hope  it  gets  better.

As  from  your  description,  it  seems  that  getting  a  ranchu  in  India  is  really  difficult  and  more  a  matter  of  luck.  My  LFS  was  selling  a  different  variety  (half  copper  half  black)  a  couple  of  months  back.  But  then  i  did  not  have  a  spare  aquarium.  Can't  stop  blaming  myseld  for  not  having  bought  a  couple  of  those  Wall Bang

The  best  part  is  that  the  never  mention  them  as  ranchu.  They  are  always  sold  as  normal  goldfishes.  That  makes  me  wonder  even  more.  And  the  price  is  not  premium  as  well.  However  the  size  is  generally  small..

I  really  wonder  why  there  are  no  shops  selling  Ranchu..
