 Hi  vk_8e,

Please  start  a  new  thread  rather  than  posting  in  some  other's  post.  You  can  start  your  own  posting,  so  that  members  can  reply  to  your  questions  properly.

Planted  Tank:  There  are  many  factors  that  you  need  to  study  and  take  care  when  you  start  a  tank.

 Substrate:  DIY  or  Branded  soil
 Lighting:
 CO2:  DIY  or  Pressurized
 Fertilizers:  DIY  or  Branded  Fertilizers
 Filtration:  Internal/Canister  etc

So  read  all  about  this.  Collect  enough  information  on  this.  There  are  many  posts  in  IAH  regarding  the  planted  tanks.

Your  placement  could  be  okay  nearby  to  the  window.  But  please  tell  us  with  the  is  the  base  of  the  window?  Is  that  a  concrete  slab  or  a  granite  slab.  I  see  support  only  in  the  middle.  See  that  the  slab  could  hold  the  weight  of  the  tank.

Or  you  might  have  to  provide  some  more  support  at  the  base  of  the  slab.

As  far  as  height  is  concerned,  you  can  go  for  18"  height.  That's  the  best  height  for  a  planted  tank.  You  can  also  go  for  12".  But  if  you  are  having  stems  plants,  you  would  have  to  do  frequent  trimming  of  plants.

thanx  for  the  quick  response  DVD2103  &  josyjames  Thumb Up   Thumb Up

its  a  concrete  slab  with  9,   8mm  internal  steel  rods  and  3  bases  (you  can  only  see  the  middle  one)  BTW  for  support,   I'm  using  a  thick  plywood  board  and  thermocol  on  top  of  it  for  base

i  guess  filtration  would  take  care  of  algae,  Confused  cant  say  about  that  at  this  moment

Does  the  plantation  control  the  ammonia/nitrate  levels?  can  any  one  tell  me  pls   Unsure   Unsure

I  have  split  this  into  a  new  post.
Keep  the  height  of  tank  to  18",  it  is  good  for  planted  tanks.
Sunlight  can  create  problems,  try  to  avoid  it,  and  use  artificial  light  for  tank.
Plants  do  control  ammonia  &  nitrates  but  you  need  good  plant  growth  for  them.

18"  height  is  ok  but  if  possible  make  it  more  than  18"
because  some  plants  grow  very  tall  and  then  bend  to  1  side  and  obstruct  light.....Anyway  it  depends  on  what  type  of  plants  u  r  going  to  keep.

Quote:
The  window  behind  the  tank  faces  exact  west,  sun  rays  falls  directly  on  to  the  tank  from  3pm  to  sunset  (can  block  using  pu  foam  sheet  if  needed)  or  does  it  requires  extra  lighting?

3pm-6pm  i.e  3hrs  of  photo  period  is  not  sufficient
min  photo  period  is  8hrs.  You  can  put  on  lights  from  10am-3pm  and  switch  it  off  after  3pm......

Welcome  to  the  beautiful  world  of  planted  aquaria   Welcome

 Few  suggestion-

 1)  Sunlight  is  very  bad  for  planted  tank..  as  you  can't  control  it

that  place  is  very  good,  but  use  black  sheet  background,  to  avoid  sun  light

 2)  Please  consult  with  a  professional  civil  guy,  on  whether  the  slab  can  hold  the  weight  of  the  tank  with  water.

 3)  Ammonia,  nitrite,  and  nitrate  will  be  used  by  plants,  most  is  nitrate..  but  remember,  the  balancing  between  the  toxic  release  and  plant  absorption  is  very  tough..  but  the  nitrogen  cycle  will  be  easy  in  planted  tank

 4)  delay  introduction  of  fish  for  min  4  days  after  planting  the  tank.  remember,  to  have  low  light  period  during  the  starting,  ferts  after  5-7  days

 5)  REMEMBER  -   your  adding  some  things  like  nutrient,  light,  and  co2  in  the  tank  to  promote  the  growth  of  the  plant.  And  if  a  mismatch  happen  in  the  balance  of  these  3...  you  will  have  a  unwanted  guest  called  algae  (still  good  amount  of  algae  grow  in  well  maintained  tank)  in  large  volume,  which  will  not  be  controllable  by  algae  eaters.  Guns

Yes  you  do  need  silicone  sealant  to  build  your  tank.  There  is  no  other  glue  that  holds  glass.

I  see  people  rarely  who  want  a  tank  in  the  window...  counting  in  me.

I  would  go  with  opposite  opinion  of  others  regarding  algae.
I  never  faced  a  serious  dirty  algae  issue,  as  much  I  am  facing  with  a  High-light  tank.

For  you,  to  grow  standard  hobby  plants,  sunlight  alone  will  not  be  enough,  you  should  add  in  some  tubes/cfls.
A  filter  would  be  most  important.

Let  me  show  off...  Very Happy

 At  present
Tank  without  lights  and  only  sunlight  and  filter  at  present,  growing  crypt  spiralis,  crypt  parva,  crypt  wenditis  and  some  aponogetons.  And  lately  a  biggy  Anubias.  4  loach  and  a  garra  live  there.

...and  this  is  the  same  tank  2yr  before  with  2  X  20  W  CFL  ,  when  I  had  time  to  stop  and  stare  Crying or Very sad   Sad

So  dont  be  bogged  down-  get  in  the  info  you  need  and  get  started  :thumb:
