 three  silver  dollars
 two  rosy  barbs

 would  love  to  add
 a  pair  of  black  severums
 a  pair  of  yellow  lab
can  i  keep  a  pair  of  convicts  ????

 plz  advice
on  whatever  aspects  ...  for  my  coming  up  tank

 a)  There  is  no  such  thing  as  a  black  severum  Very Happy

 b)  Labs  should  not  be  kept  in  "pairs".  Groups  of  4-6  are  best.  They  should  also  not  be  mixed  with  south  or  central  American  cichlids.

So,  either  get  your  severums  or  a  small  group  of  labs.

thanks  for  correcting  me  on  severums  !!
(  see  how  clueless  me  is  !!)
   Surprised

 and  about  the  yellow  labs
well  i  know  they  are  not  to  be  put  with  american  cichlids  ...  just  that  i  used  to  have  a  pair    which  didnt  have  any  apparent  probs.  ...so    i  thought  maybe  !!

 but  if  its  a  strict  no  no  ..  then  i  won't  !!
   Crying or Very sad

 thanks

 any  more  suggestions??

i  read  that  cichlid  tanks  shud  have  sand  for  substrate  !!  how  bad  would  be  the  gravel  which  i  have  ??  its  kind  of  coarse  with  almost  pebble  like  granules  !!

 advice  !!!

This  substrate  should  not  be  a  problem  ,  You  should  have  a  lot  of  rock  work  with  hideing  places  like  caves.
 Am  I  correct?

Hi  nicefish!I  wont  say  pebbles  is  bad, but  finer  sand  is  preferable  for  cichlids  that  like  to  shift/dig  sand.

Some  hobbyists  like  to  use  a  couple  of  non-cichlids  (fast  and  hardy  ones)  called  as  dither  fish. The  main  idea  is  that  these  dither  fish  act  as  targets  for  aggresive  cichlids  ,and  spares  other  cichlids  from  all  the  aggression. You  may  think  of  silver  dollars  as  dither  fish.

Labs  have  to  be  kept  in  groups  for  the  above  reason.More  numbers  help  distribute  aggression, sparing  any  one  particular  fish  all  the  trouble.  Smile  It  is  difficult  to  keep  african(esp  malawi  cichlids  )  for  this  particular  reason:anger  management.Otherwise  they  are  very  hardy  fish.

and  is  there  something  ..(anything?!!?)  which  dollars  dont  eat  !!  they  are  such  cows  !!

how  does  one  mantain  a  healthy  ph...  apart  from  having  corals  and  tufa  rocks  ??!!  does  adding  salt  help  ??!!

my  dear  friend  by  concrete  if  you  mean  cement  -  don't  haste  the  fish  introduction  till  you  treat  the  concrete    Sad
If  the  term  is  well  understood  -  does  it  not  become  too  heavy  for  a  backdrop?  -  think  about  it!

What  is  the  PH  of  your  tap  Water  ?
if  the  PH  is  too  low  you  can  use  crushed  coral  in  your  canister.
I  get  PH  7.9  through  my  tap  (lucky  me)

well  i  am  still  looking  for  a  ph  test  kit..  so  dont  know  yet  .
i  cant  find  this  kit  though  !!  one  lfs  told  me  Rs  3000  for  some  test  kit  which  he  said  wasnt  just  for  ph...  but  still  i  thought  it  was  expensive...
 or  is  it  ok  ??

about  the  cement  backdrop...  its  not  just  cement  of  course.  i  carved  it  out  first  with  thermocol  chunks  you  get  with  packages  ..(  i'd  bought  a  new  washing  machine  !)  and  then  gave  it  a  good  coat  with  cement  ..    not  heavier  than  5-6  kgs  i  guess  !!..  which  i  prefer  to  putting  actual  rocks  which  would  surely  be  much  more  heavy  !!

BY  THE  WAY  ...  no  one  advised  me  if  i  can  have  a  pair  of  convict  cichlids  !!!

Hmm..  with  yellow  labs,  plants  are  okay  IMO..  mine  dont  dig  plants..  But  plants  and  silver  dollars,  i'd  say..  in  your  dreams!!  Chuckle  ..  they  really  graze  like  cows..  I  read  that  Java  Fern  and  anubias  +  Silver  Dollars  would  do..  in  my  case,  i  had  Amazons..  so  i  used  to  add  a  Vallisinaria  or  cobomba  every  week  for  the  dollars  to  eat  and  they'd  spare  the  amazons!  worked  for  me!  Later  i  used  Spinache  with  the  same  effect...  good  luck  for  your  tank.

Its  okay  to  feed  spinach  for  all  vegi  fish.  best  diet  for  them,  make  sure  you  boil  it  before  giving  it  to  them  (basically  to  remove  pesticides)

 Hi  Nichefish

Silver  Dollars  and  Cichlids  may  still  work,  but  why  risk  with  Rosy  Barbs  ?  IMO  they  would  succumb  to  Cichlids  too  easily  too  soon.
