Hi,  what  is  the  effective  photoperiod  for  plants?  Do  we  need  to  give  a  off  interval  in  noon  to  subdue  algae?  Also  should  we  switch  them  off  one  day  a  week.

It  also  depends  on  tank  height.

 Hi  DRDHEEP,

Usually  the  the  light  should  be  on  for  7  to  10  hrs  in  a  planted  tank.  Again  it  differs  while  setting  up  a  new  tank.

Some  people  follow  this  method  to  control  algae.  But  I  dont  think  its  a  good  idea  to  switch  off  the  light  for  a  day  in  a  week.  Normally  to  control  algae  we  use  blackout  method  for  3  to  4  days  at  a  stretch  but  not  every  week.

For  a  mature  tank,  about  8  hrs  is  good.  For  a  newly  set  up  tank,  work  your  way  up  from  4  hrs.  There  is  no  need  for  any  regular  blackout  period  on  your  tank

 Mortis  :
 Thanks.
Working  my  up  means  4  hours  first  week.  6  hours  second  week,  8  hours  third  week?

Its  even  better  if  you  go  4,5,6,7,8.  Normally  what  I  would  do  is  after  the  first  2  weeks  cut  off  the  bottoms  and  replant  the  tops  of  stems,  remove  old,  emmersed  leaves,  etc  so  the  plants  again  would  be  in  perfect  condition  and  therefore  it  would  be  better  to  keep  it  low  for  another  couple  of  weeks.

 +1  Mortis

But  then  what  does  a  dimmer  and  all  that  stuff  do  to  plants?

I  realy  envy  that  guy  who  made  his  led  light  himself,  all  those  lights  and  glamour  on  tank  Cheering

I  wish  I  had  that  time  to  get  those  lights  and  stuff,  I'd  surely  do  it,  I  have  heard  that  we  can  temper  with  the  dimmer  codes  if  we  have  the  knowledge  in  C++
