 Hi  All!

Am  setting  up  a  5  by  2  by  2  tank  for  a  friend.  Would  like  to  know  what  options  are  there.

Do  leave  out  a  planted  tank,  arowana  tank  and  a  goldfish  tank,  as  he  does  not  want  these.  And  a  discus  tank  would  be  too  much  of  maintenance  for  him  too.

Filtration  will  be  handled  by  2  Eheim  2217s,  at  opposite  ends.

So  guys,  do  drop  in  your  ideas!  Filtration  can  be  changed  too,  if  necessary.

Thanks  for  introducing  me  to  IAH.

How  about  Fronts  or  Blue  Dolphins?

You  can  go  for  malavi  cichlid  community  tank  with  lots  of  rocks  as  decor  with  golden  sand  as  substrate.  Please  do  not  forget  to  ad  a  internal  power  filter/power  head  also  which  can  be  used  as  a  water  circulator  also.  Thumb Up

African  Dwarfs  are  my   favourite  ones  of-  late  with  a  lot  of  rocky  hiding  places...

Even  fronts  and  Gribrosa's  have  started  facinating  me  after  hearing  to  Srini's  seminar.

Fronts  and/or   Blue  dolphins  are  cool,  but  this  guy  wants  it  a  bit  colorful.  So,  though  all  of  us  appreciate  fronts  and  also  the  blue  dolphins,  I  dont  know  if  he  will.

A  Malawi  community  is  a  nice  idea.  And  filtration  should  be  no  problem  as  2  Eheim  2217s  would  surely  do  an  amazing  job,  I  am  sure.

 Any  more  ideas?

 Aahh  ..  the  possibilities..   Smile

i'd  say  that  there  is  nothing  like  a  large,  heavily  planted  tank  with  one  school  of  the  tetras  (or  any  other  schooling  fish)  of  your  choice.  (and  the  regular  cleaning  crew  of  course)  and  if  i  was  to  start  a  similar  tank  i'd  go  with  about  a  school  of  60-70  Cardinals.   something  like  this.  maybe....

its  the  tank  at  the  entrance  to  amano's  nature  aquarium  gallery  in  Niigata.

The  Malawi  Community  seems  nice  to  me.  I  already  had  this  in  mind,  but  needed  some  reassurance.

Now,  what  stocking  levels  and  what  fishes  would  you  recommend?

What  I  have  in  mind  is  2  to  3  inch  sized  fishes.  All  the  Malawis  I  can  lay  my  hands  on,  and  how  many  numbers  of  each  would  I  need?

I  want  this  to  grow  into  a  beautiful  community,  where  aggression  levels  and  manageable,  and  ultimately  a  treat  for  the  eyes!

I  have  had  a  very  good  malawi  community  going  in  a  5x1.5x1.5  tank  for  almost  2  years  Smile  you  could  start  off  with  3  inch  size  commonly  available  mbunas  with  just  dark  coloured  rocks  and  substrate  for  decor  Thumb Up  since  you  have  2  2217s  for  filtering,  i  guess  you  can  overstock  to  cut  down  on  aggression...maybe  around  24  nos  (taking  into  count  that  they  grow  fast  and  huge  if  provided  with  right  conditions  and  breed  like  crazy  too...and  theres  no  way  you  can  lay  your  hands  on  the  oung  ones)  i've  had  18  adults  and  around  15-16  young  ones  that  managed  to  survive  Thumbs Up  HTH
 Rgds

Great  !!  Malawi  cichlids  with  mostly  mbuna  and  a  few  peacocks  and  haps  will  look  like  a  paradise.  Think  about  keeping  4  males  and  4-5  females  for  each  of  them.  Make  sure  to  buy  them  from  a  breeder  to  ensure  you  get  females.
 My  personal  choice  would  be
M.Lambordoi  (blue  morph)  1  male  and  4  females
M.Johanni  (electric  blue)  1  male  and  4  females
snowwhite  P.Socolofi  (white  morph)  -  1  male  and  4  females
 M.Estherae  (Orange  morph)  -  1  male  and  2  females
Add  as  many  peacock  males  as  you  get  (avoid  something  that  looks  orangish  since  that  might  make  your  orange  morph  or  blue  morph  think  as  a  competing  male).  Some  haps...

Hello  Nytyn,  was  chatting  up  with  mr  Srinivas  (sami  of  moba  gibberosa  fame)  and  he  said  he  once  kept  a  colony  of  Red  Kodango's  (C.  Borleyis)  before  buying  his  fronts  in  his  6ftr,  his  juveniles  are  available  as  breeding  pairs  from  one  breeder  in  madhurai...

These  guys  are  one  of  most  beautiful  cichlids  in  malawi  and  a  school  would  look  stunning....let  me  know  your  thoughts.  you  can  go  in  for  3  males  versus  5-6  females   Thumb Up
