 Hi  All,

I  will  be  getting  few  dwarf  catfish  tommorrow  and  these  are  sold  as  pygmy  catfish.

I'm  not  even  sure  but  the  cat  fish  looks  similar  to  one  in  the  below  mentioned  link.

 http://indianaquariumhobbyist.com/gallery2/v/User_Galleries/trevor/Fish/Moth+Catfish0001.JPG.html

Had  kept  these  cat  fish  earlier  but  failed  to  keep  them  alive  as  I  was  a  beginnner  back  then.  LFS  guy  mehad  mentioned  that  they  dont  grow  beyond  2  cm  and  hence  they  were  termed  as  pygmy  catfish.

Would  like  to  know  if  there  is  any  special  requirements  to  keep  them  and  their  feeding  habbits  too.  Will  post  the  pictures  of  the  ones  I'm  getting  by  tomorrow.

 Regards,
 Surya

 HI  Neil,

I  realy  dont  think  if  the  fish  I  had  kept  looked  like  the  one  you  posted.  To  be  more  specific  and  for  you  to  help  me  identify  ,  I  ill  post  the  picture  of  the  fish  tomorrow.

BTW,  I'm  curious  to  know  about  the  fish  you  posted?

 Regards,
 Surya

Well...tomorrow  it  shall  be  then.  Smile

That  fish  is  a  Hara  hara....  the  pic  belongs  to  Beta.  I've  got  about  four  of  these  little  guys....one  of  my  favorite  cats...they  grow  to  typically  2"-2.5  ".
My  cats  are  very  active  after  dark...they  move  around  in  a  curiously  hopping  manner,  eat  a  variety  of  live  worms,  never  touches  any  other  food  seemingly.
Also  called  Moth  catfish,  the  genus  also  includes  H.  jerdoni  and  a  few  others.  The  only  other  Hara's  i've  got  are  jerdoni's....tiny  little  fish...they  love  to  anchor  themselves  to  plants.

 Thanks  for  the  mail  Neil

The  ones  I  had  kept  earlier  were  tiny  buggers  who  never  stopped  anchoring  themselves  on  plants.

 Surya

Probably  jerdoni's  then...cute  little  guys  eh?  Smile

Your  catfish  looks  like  an  E.  sicula  right?...i  hope  it  doesn't  turn  out  to  be  a  very  young  Bagarius.

 Hi  Neil,

Got  the  buggers  today.  I  hope  you  would  be  able  to  ID  these  guys  and  let  me  know  a  little  about  their  feeding  and  compatibility  with  other  fish.

 Questions

 1.  Was  planning  on  keeping  them  in  my  1'*7.5"*7.5"  nano  tank.  Would  this  be  fine?
 2.  If  I  add  them  in  my  2'  planted  tank,  along  with  betta's,  tetra's  and  cory's.....  will  they  be  fine?
 3.  Whats  their  ideal  diet?  Will  they  eat  algae  waffers?
 4.  How  about  the  water  parameter?

 Regards,
 Surya

They  are  hara  jerdoni,  I  recently  got  6  of  them,  cool  lil  fish.  They  are  nocturnals,  and  very  lousy  throughout  the  day,  they  dont  move  even  an  inch  if  you  dont  disturb  them.  They  seem  really  complicated  to  me,  especially  feeding  them,  I  add  a  few  crushed  flakes,  tubifex  worms  before  switching  of  the  lights,  I  dont  know  whether  they  are  eating  or  not.  I  observed  them  in  very  dim  light  at  dark  hours,  they  were  browsing  gravel  like  cories,  this  means  that  they  definitely  need  a  sandy  bottom.  Heres  the  only  useful  link  i  found.  Great  thing  is  that  they  are  natives  Thumbs Up  They  are  called  Dwarf  Stone  Catfish...more  commonly  Anchor  catfish,  but  LFS  here  pronounced  them  as  'hangers  catfish'

1-They  should  be  fine  in  that  sized  tank,  but  I  feel  a  foot  cube  should  be  better,  with  bogwood  pieces  and  stones,  for  them  to  hide  during  the  day.
2-Dont  do  that,  you'll  never  see  them  again
3-Even  I  need  the  answer  to  this....
 4-Normal  water  will  be  fine

Sorry....my  lens  couldnt  go  further  than  this

They  don't  take  readily  to  non  live  foods  and  are  incapable  of  competing  with  more  active  fish  that  forage  at  the  same  level.  They're  otherwise  great  for  small  tanks.  Ideal  tankmates  include  small  killies,  ricefish,  small  cyprinids  and  small  characins.

Well,  jerdoni's  typically  love  plants  to  hang  out  on....you  won't  see  them  much,  but  they're  great  for  tiny  communities.
Good  luck  with  the  little  guys.  Smile
BTW,  if  you're  interested  in  Hara  cats,  i  suggest  you  look  for  Hara  hara...my  favourite  species.

 HI  Neil,

I  guess  for  the  time  being  I  will  be  content  with  jerdoni's.  I  dont  want  to  keep  any  thing  that  would  grow  bigger  in  size  as  I  dont  have  enough  tanks.

Will  surely  keep  the  hara  hara's  in  mind.

 Regards,
 Surya
