 Hello  All,

I  was  browsing  and  found  out  couple  of  dealers  in  India  who  supplies  Ferric  DTPA  and  EDTA  ..  Which  one  will  be  more  suitable  for  Planted  Tanks  for  Iron  Suppliment  ?

Both  are  good,  but  the  downside  of  EDTA  is  that  it  oxidises  under  light,  so  DTPA  would  actually  be  more  preferrable.

Raghu  Fe  DTPA  is  the  preferred  way  to  go,  but  it  is  not  easily  available.

You  can  add  a  small  bit  to  the  regular  Microsol  B  mixture.  Apparently  the  DTPA  boosts  the  EDTA  chelation.

I  don't  know  how,  but  it  seems  to  work.

Why  the  ferric  compounds?  I  was  under  the  impression  ferrous  is  the  way  to  go.

You  don't  get  Ferrous  EDTA  or  Ferrous  DTPA  salt.  You  only  get  Ferric  EDTA  and  DTPA.

One  thing  I  have  done  in  the  old  days  is  make  a  solution  of  EDTA  and  DTPA  (non  Ferric)  and  dissolve  Ferrous  Sulphate  in  the  solution.

The  solution  worked  good.  If  you  dissolve  Ferrous  sulphate  you  get  a  greenish  solution.  When  EDTA  is  added  to  it  the  solution  turns  golden  after  a  time.  People  in  the  know  have  told  me  that  this  indicates  chelation.

I  guess  it  has  something  to  do  with  the  valency.  Got  to  read  up  on  college  chemistry.
