Last  week,  23/5/08,  i  caught  a  fast  bus  from  Cal  and  reached  the  village  of  Shideswar,  right  in  the  agriculture  fields  of  Haora.
Took  with  me  several  jars,  a  bunch  of  plastic  bags  and  a  borrowed  camera(  mine  touring  around  Kerala  with  my  Dad  at  the  moment).
Caught  a  few  nice  fish,  released  the  majority  of  'em  back  in  and  brought  only  a  select  few  back  home.

Here  are  a  few  pics  of  the  fish  and  streams  and  little  ponds  i  did  most  of  my  searching  ,  was  helped  by  some  very  nice  locals,  i  know  a  guy  living  in  the  village  and  had  put  up  at  his  place.

On  the  road,i  checked  out  this  canal  the  next  day.

These  were  absolutely  teeming  with  fish.

I  forgot  to  come  back  to  this  part  of  the  pond  the  next  day,  water  level  in  most  of  the  pools  and  ponds  was  down  to  knee  level.

Caught  this  guy  on  the  way,  Scutelleridae  species.

This  was  teeming  with  Channa  fry,  looked  like  C.gachua  to  me.

Caught  killies  and  shrimps  over  here.  Also  some  Puntius.  sp  and  climbing  perch  which  i  threw  back.

Now  the  plants  that  were  to  be  seen  everywhere  will  gladden  your  hearts,  Smile  i'm  no  plant  guy,  so  i  couldn't  tell  species,  and  due  to  the  strange  deadening  out  of  the  camera  battery(  this  is  why  i  hate  borrowed  camera's)  i  couldn't  take  too  many  pics  on  site,  also  as  i  was  doing  pretty  much  everything  by  myself,  i  couldn't  risk  juggling  fish  and  the  camera  at  one  time.

 ID  this  please.

 Excellent  plant  growth.

 The  'team'  helping  out.

Nasty  blighter  this,  tried  to  bite  me.

was  sunning  himself  on  one  of  the  paths,  dashed  off  when  i  tried  to  creep  closer  for  another  shot.

Was  around  5  feet  from  nose  to  tail.

Went  fishing  here,  caught  some  nice  Labeo  calbasu  for  the  frying  pan.

 Now  then,  the  fish!
I  took  pics  of  them  only  when  i  got  home  and  replaced  the  battery,  had  a  bit  of  explaining  to  do  to  the  owner  of  the  cam,  but  hey,  its  not  my  fault.

 One  of  the  killies.

I'm  no  good  with  shrimp  pics.

the  only  Channa  i  got  back,  i  like  that  fin  spot.

One  of  the  badis,  i  was  surprised  at  the  number  of  badis  i  caught.

 Another  one.

 Another  killie.

 And...another  badis.

 Esomus  sp.

Overall  it  was  an  okay  trip, would've  been  better  if  i  had  a  few  companions  and  was  better  equipped.
Am  going  back  there  this  month  itself.  Smile

Awesome  trip  man!  The  Badis  look  splendid!   Very Happy

It  would  be  great  if  you  could  take  a  few  pictures  of  the  exact  place  where  you  caught  the  Badis.  It'll  be  really  interesting  to  see  what  kind  of  a  habitat  they  live.  Since  Badis  are  carnivorous  fish,  did  you  notice  what  kind  of  invertebrate  life  the  water-bodies  in  which  these  were  found  had?

Keep  it  up  dude.  Your  trip  makes  me  wish  i  lived  in  Kolkata!   Thumb Up

The  flower  looks  like  one  from  an  Echinodorous  sp.

The  Badis  have  a  good  coloration.

Those  are  Native  Water  Monitor.  Can  be  long  as  7  feet.  In  Bengali  those  are  known  as  'Go  Saap".  Not  poisonous  but  having  very  tough  jaws.

Very  nice  !  The  water  scorpion?  is  scary.  I  wouldn't  want  to  get  into  a  pool  with  that.
Thank  god,  we  don't  have  candiru  in  India>

How  about  a  pic  of  youself  too!!
