The  biggest  Magurs  I  have  seen  were  at  Taraporewala  Aquarium,  Mumbai.  Didn't  seem  big  enough  to  eat  children  either.

Not  really.  Had  a  strange  mouth.  Most  of  them  were  more  than  4  feet  long.

Balaji  is  correct.  The  common  name  Magur  is  applied  to  Clarias  spp.,  either  batrachus  or  gariepinus.

I  am  talking  about  Hybrid  Magurs  which  are  4-6  feet  long  not  the  commonly  available  deshi  magurs.  Wink  'Kamot's  are  dwarf  Shark  species  largly  available  at  the  backwater  of  Sundarban,  west  Bengal.  They  do  a  smooth  cutting  job  always.

Shankar,  they  don't  swallow  the  whole  body.  They  cut  the  flesh  in  chunks.

The  image  of  these  poor  buggers  is  quite  over  hyped  as  far  as  I  can  see.  They  are  really  clumsy  fish  and  eat  just  bout  anything.  Mine  often  rams  into  other  fish  and  any  other  solid  object  (And  no.  His  eyes  are  fine  Very Happy  ).  Doesn  indulge  in  anything  nasty  as  far  as  I  can  see.

 Balaji,

Just  a  7  feet  long  pond,  but  that  doesn't  stop  me  from  wishing.

the  fish  in  the  pic  is  not  a  wallagu  attu
but  it  is  of  the  specie  bagarius
actually  it  is  a  bagarius   yarelli
and  these  are  not  man  eating,  the  info  that  the  catfish  is  now  man  eating  is  not  true

most  big  cat  fish  are  opportunistic  feeders  and  thus  will  eat  the  rotting  corpses  or  so,  but  they  are  also  the  most  shy  fish  ever,  and  will  not  come  close  any  human  being  whether  it  be  a  kid  or  a  man,  not  even  the  mekong  or  the  wels  catfish  which  are  the  biggest  among  all  the  catfish  can  actually  eat  a  kid  or  even  a  toddler,  and  most  large  catfish's  diet  depends  on  smaller  fish  and  crabs  and  such  which  are  easily  available

i  have  been  reading  a  lot  about  catfish  for  the  past  2  years,  and  i  know  most  of  my  cats  quite  well,  and  the  fish  in  the  picture  is  a  true  beauty  at  that  size  and  they  take  quite  a  long  time  to  reach  that  size

i  hope  people  don't  read  such  info  and  being  misinformed  try  and  wipe  out  such  beautiful  fish

 Headbanger  :

The  link  I  had  posted  contains  the  pic  of  a  Yarrelli.  The  link  Babu  had  posted  is  a  Wallago  Attu.  And  I  do  agree  with  you.  They  are  the  most  beautiful  fish  and  their  reputation  has  always  been  like  this  cos  of  various  reasons. And  the  sizes  they  come  in  man  right  from  the  miniscule  Erethistidae  family  to  the  monstrous   Silurus  glanis.

mostly  catfish  do  not  hybridize  in  the  wild,  most  of  the  catfish  are  hybridized  in  LABs
you  gotta  keep  a  few  hybrid  catfish  you  will  really  like  them
i  used  to  have  a  Red  tailed  catfish  and  a  tiger  shovel  nosed  catfish  hybrid
he  was  an  awesome  pet,  but  had  him  only  to  grow  out  for  a  friend.

a  magur  in  hindi  usually  means  a  crocodile

and  wallago  leerii  have  been  tainted  by  many  village  folklore  which  says  that  these  fish  have  been  eating  corpses  and  have  grown  fond  of  human  flesh  *bleh*,  there  have  been  no  concrete  reports  that  state  that  these  fish  actually  attack  humans

most  of  this  is  just  media  hype  and  old  widows  tall  tales
