I've just joined this fantastic site. I find that this is really a conglomerate of aquarium heavyweights. So, please pardon for this basic posting. After trying my hand, somewhat successfully, at community tanks for some ten years I intend to set up a proper discus tank. The tank is ready: 58"X18"X18". I shall make sure that water PH is between 6.5 & 7.5, and use a thermostat to maintain temperature at 30C. I also have a zeolite Iron removing plan fitted at the main supply outlet of my home water tank. Could you kindly give me some more tips about water quality / filtration. I plan NOT to use an undergravel (in fact I'm thinking of not using any gravel at all). Instead I'm planning to install two home made wet/dry trickle filters. Each will be built inside an acrylic (6 mm) tank of 12"X6"X8". I plan to trickle the water from the tank on a perforated acrylic tray, which will then pass through a thick sponge, bioballs, ceramic pipe pieces (1" each), and peat. Finally the water will be pumped back into the tank. This will operate 24X7. Do you feel this is fine. What else do I need to do? Once I introduce discus (I am thinking of buying 2 at a time), what may I feed them. In my community tank I've had excellent results feeding live tubifex, and bloodworms and tetrabits. Should it be the same?
Sorry again, if I have diluted your discussion with some very basic Qs. But hope you will help this amateur.
