That's a good fish you have. I have a similar looking guy with more of the red. I have never bred bettas, but have lost two only after they lived a good 3+ years (I got them as full-grown sepcimens from the LFS). When I got the recent two, they too weren't in the best of shapes, but are now the kings of the two small planted tanks (they share it with a guppy family in each, and ensure that the fry find a good home in his stomach). I have always kept the temperature at around 27 degree C and they seem to enjoy the warmth. So, regular water changes and a constant temperature is the key to a long life for a betta.
Personally, they are my FAVOURITE fish, because they truly have character. You'll soon find that your Betta ceases to be scared of you and comes up for a bite.

1 question - since bettas are usually kept in bowls or 5-10liter tanks, how do we provide / affix a heater/thermo-regulator to keep the water temperature a constant warm temperature?? Also, for how much time can we keep the mirror to interest the betta in some show-acting??
