Some  words  of  cheer  from  our  meeting  with  the  govt.  officers  today.
The  Karnataka  Fisheries  Development  Corporation  will  open  twenty  Kiosks  in  the  city  of  Bangalore.  These  will  sell  fishes  and  fish  related  accessories  including  tanks,  food,  equipment  etc.
These  Kiosks  will  be  run  on  franchise  basis  and  our  interested  members  are  welcome  to  apply.  This  will  begin  with  mostly  low  end  stuff  to  rope  in  the  common  man  into  the  hobby.
The  KFDC  will  start  with  by  importing  filters  from  China.

For  the  more  enterprising  food  fish  can  also  be  supplied  and  sold.  Smile

Well  that  is  great  news  Trevor.  I  guess  or  rather  hope  the  people  selling  stuff  on  the  kiosks  will  be  a  little  more  aware  about  things  than  our  LFS.

Also  what  happened  to  this  thread,  did  this  die  the  natural  death  that  i  had  said  i  think  in  my  1st  post?  Sad  very  sad.

I  guess  somebody  with  access  to  the  rules  and  regulations  regarding  import  of  fishes  to  put  it  up  on  the  forum  for  us  to  discuss  and  debate  on  this  further

It  would  indeed  be  sad  for  this  thread  to  die  down.

The  thought  is  very  much  alive.  I  would  better  update  on  this,  only  after  a  few  concrete  steps.   Smile

Well,  laws  should  be  put  into  place  to  ban  import  of  Chinese  flowerhorns  and  other  hybrid  and  GM  fish.  Imagine  the  havoc  they  could  cause  when  they  get  into  our  water  bodies.

Only  recently  came  to  know,  Trevor.  Great  article  though.  I  had  seen  it  a  while  ago  when  I  googled  for  flowerhorn.  Have  stopped  keeping  flowerhorns  since  then.  Arrival  of  Chinese  FW  in  LFS  (even  a  small  town  like  Erode  has  them)  is  worrying  me.  Nothing  against  the  Chinese  though.  The  fish  are  more  attractive  than  other  FH's  commonly  available.  The  demand  for  such  designer  fish  is  only  bound  to  increase.  They  have  hype,  they  are  hardy,  easy  to  keep,  and  so,  people  just  buy  them  like  crazy. That  is  worrisome.

Since  I  opened  up  the  store  last  month,  I  have  had  plenty  of  enquiries  for  the  'Flowerfish'  a.k.a  our  Flower  Horn  including  one  just  now.  People  have  come  in  and  sworn  of  its  'positive'  effects  even  though  they  have  never  owned  one.  They  have  told  me  what  colour  it  should  be  to  bring  good  luck  and  all  that.

Coming  back  to  the  question  of  imports,  though  legal,  I  wouldn't  want  to  go  through  the  hassle  of  seeking  permissions  from  7-9  government  departments,  an  import  permit,  a  quarantine  certificate  from  the  local  quarantine  department  and  end  up  with  just  dead  fish  and  nothing  else.

Yes,  legalizing  imports  do  help.  But  it  is  the  damn  red  tape  that  kills  the  initiative.

Well,  if  anybody  is  interested  in  importing  and  needs  the  invoicing  procedure  and  format  then  you  can  get  in  touch  with  me.  Its  almost  like  writing  a  book  though  Smile

Similarly,  the  plant  quarantine  procedures  and  forms  etc,  go  over  250  pages.
