So Bangalore has it's Up's and down's. water being on top of the list for hobbyist.
Problem Statement :
Till now I was putting up in a place where i used to get decent water but now will be shifting my house to a place where the TDS of water is high ( read 700+ ) It's borewell water. I know a few members how have TDS well over 1200 in their place.
Presently I am supposed to change around 220 Liters of water each week. It might go up in future. So I will take 300L per week as a base.
Desired State :
Given the choice of fishes I keep, i do not want to give up my hobby or do away with the multiple tanks I have. The only solution is to put in place a RO system to do the job.
However, it seems that there is not a single post in IAH which points to a build and gives directions. I found one post in KAC to help me but that was too kolkata specific. It was a fantastic starting point as to what I needed. It gave me the confidence that a DIY was possible.
I tried searching for places in Bangalore which would give me the raw materials for the build, but that too failed. I was dis-appointed and had 2 choices.
1. Go in for a commercial RO unit. the cost estimate that I got from 2 companies in bangalore for a unit that would give me 20-25LPH was 17K !
2. Search online
So my search went further and I have come up with the links of things that I require. ebay is the easiest source of things for most of us in India. If you all have a better source, please guide me.

With this, I think I will be able to reduce the cost by around 50%. But I have a few doubts.
So here are my questions.
1. Do you think I need to go in for something of a better brand ? If yes, please let me know a reliable online source.
2. The good booster pump I found is rated at of 48V. I could not get any SMPS higher than 36V. How do i power my pump ?
3. Do I also need a solenoid ?
4. Do you thing this will reduce my TDS under 50 ?
5. Just as a conformation, I do NOT need the post carbon filer. Correct ?
7. will adding another 75 GPD membrane help ? I saw commercial RO with 2 membrane's. Not sure what the 2nd one was.
regards,
/abhishek

From what I understand, if you want to reduce the amount of water wastage and also increase the production rate, you increase the size of the pump from 75 to 150 GPD or whatever the unit is. An additional 75GPD membrane is added on the waste water line.
Im unsure if this is added to the loop which is removing the waste water out of the system or the loop for waste water that goes through UV etc and is addied back to the drinking water to boost the TDS/minerals/taste
Now your other scenario is if even the RO water has a high TDS since your source water is very high. Then you would have to again increase the pump size and add another membrane this time I guess in series after the main RO membrane to further purify the water or possibly to the waste water loop that goes through UV to add back TDS to the RO water.
You might have to also add additional chambers containing Ion Exchange resins, water softeners and another stage of activated carbon to further bring your water to the parameters you desire
I hope I managed to convey my points to you in a way that you can grasp easily. Hopefully it wont confuse you further !
My suggestion would be this : Get an assembled filter thats a copy of the Kent Grand Plus. These are available online for less than 10K. Install and check the parameters of the water you get. Then get the diaphragm pump of the Kent Supreme which is rated 150GPD (grand plus is 75) and an additional membrane and replace the pump and add the extra membrane on the waste water loop (you will have to figure out which of the two loops I mentioned above works) and thenyou should get a decent water quality in terms of TDS as well as the amount of water produced. Im sure it will end up being sufficient for your needs.
Please share the progress you have made and any other research you come across. I myself am very curious to know which loop you add the extra membrane to. |

I am also thinking the same as my Kent will not work out on my current tank and high TDS, borewell water. At the moment, I am finding, buying the drinking can water is better way.
How about recycling your tank's water itself, which is already low on TDS ? I am not sure, if this is a good idea to think about. |

Thanks Mortis. I am still working on the build. There have been few friends who have suggested me NOT to go on for RO but bottled water. ( though bottled water will be much more difficult for me )
I will keep you all updated. Anyone else with any suggestions ? |

As you can see I tried helping but he did not report back on his progress. It should be fairly simple to make one yourself although it might not be so neat looking as a commercial one. Try Pming the author, dont know if hes active on IAH |

I shifted my house around 4 months back.
Before that my input was 1000ppm .. output was around 60ppm
Now Input is 250ppm output is 7ppm.
Have been using it for around a year now. Changed 1 pre-filter because water in my old house was very very dirty.
Will share the pictures when I am home or over the weekend |
