Is  anyone  experiencing  any  loss  of  fish  during  winter  from  your  buckets  /  outdoor  containers  ?

I  do  find  myself  having  lesser  mollies  in  my  buckets  so  I'm  wondering  if  its  to  do  with  the  winter  chill.

Currently  the  bucket  is  exposed  to  only  4  hours  of  sun  so  I  wonder  if  increasing  the  exposure  for  longer  hours  will  help  keeping  it  warmer  for  a  longer  time.

Any  fishes  for  that  matter  and  in  open  buckets  outdoor  are  suceptible  to  temperature  vagaries.
Another  issue  ,  which  was  also  recently  pointed  out  in  a  similar  case  was  ,  water  spoiling  due  to  stray  objects  falling  into  water.
could  be  tit  bits  of  food  dropped  by  birds  to  leaves(blown  by  wind)  rotting  away...all  these  could  lead  to  livestock  loss.
Increased  exposure  to  sun  would  lead  to  more  temperature  variations  for  your  fish  to  adjust  to,  which  will  stress  them  easily  and  lead  to  loss.

Plus  you  dragonfly  larvae  might  be  killing  a  few  of  them  of  :O

You  could  put  in  a  50W  heater  into  each  of  the  buckets

Precisely  my  question  a  few  days  back.

After  our  chat,  I  have  setup  a  bucket  with  few  plants.  I  have  not  added  any  fishes  yet.  Maybe  I  will  wait  for  Jan,2013  to  do  that.

A  bucket  in  open  is  not  exactly  a  good  idea  for  fish.
I  don't  think  a  container  less  than  100  lit  should  be  used  in  these  circumstances
I  had  a  150  lit  outdoor  tank  in  lucknow,  it  housed  a  healthy  population  of  fish  even  in  winters  with  temp  of  8-9  C.
It  had  large  pots  with  plants.
This  is  the  lily  in  bloom  from  that  pond.

in  winter  if  the  a  small  container  like  buckets  are   exposed  to  sunlight  then  there  would  be  3  to  4  degree  of  change  in  temperature  day/night  which  is  fatal  for  fishes

I  guess,  as  a  general  rule,  smaller  the  size  of  container  /  pond,  there  is  a  greater  change  in  temperature  variation.

I  tried  keeping  mollies  in  plastic  bucket  once  but  it  did  not  work  &  that's  probably  because  the  size  of  the  bucket  was  not  big  enough  &  my  fish  could  not  handled  sudden  rise  in  temperatures.
