Hi all!
Sunday when I was changing the aquarium water,I forgot to switch off the heater. I got an electirc shock. I think that there is some problem in my heater. But main thing I saw that fish was normally swimming. I want to know "Will fish get electric shock or not". |

Yes, if there is something wrong with the heater it can shock the fishes. I would say replace the heater ASAP. |

I differ on that. You got a shock because you were grounded, the electricity passed to the earth though you. When the heater is in the tank, that path is absent. There may be stray currents which may or may not affect your fish.
In any case, since your life is more important than any fishes, I would suggest that you discard or replace the heater. |

Bingo Pradeep.
Nothing will happen to the fish. It's your life that's in danger. |

I dont think fish will get electric shock....
My filter is leaking current slightly since 2 months...when I put my hand in water I get little shock...but none of my fish harmed because of that... |

Yes, I stank corrected. I did some reading up right now. Looks like the fish will be safe. My apologies. But I guess a faulty heater is best changed due one's own life risks. |

+3 to Pradeep!
The glass insulates the water from grounding. Its only when, you put your hand in the water, you complete the ground and pass current through you. The same moment, fishes get to experience the electric shock too, since they are in the same conducting medium. Not otherwise.
I wonder if the prey can still stay immune to an Electric Catfish in a glass aquarium, with no grounding. |

Hey guys, I would like to add my two cents.......
Electricity does affect fish that is how the principle of electrofishing works.
Like our other members pointed out you are in more danger than the fish.
If a steady dose of electircity is provided the fish is known to move towards the anode due to taxis...in simple words their sense organs get confused.
For you its mortal danger..............for the fish its a nagging howl in the ear
Change it as soon as possible. All the best |

To add on to the discussions,
Some years back I used to go to Arunachal Pradesh to stay in logging forest camps since timber logging was still legal then. For our benefit we used to carry small generators. I remember we used to use the generators for catching fish in the rivers and pools. The two points of the output would be hooked into small iron rods and dug into the river bottom (normally around 5-10 feet). Then the generator would be switched on and since the hilly river waters were crystal clear, any fish that used to come near that zone (a rough radius of around 3-4 feet) would simply turn upside down and get stuck among the rocks. Not all the fish would be like this, some would zap out and get out of that zone and be normal. We could clearly see this happen. Once some 10-15 fish would be down and out, the generator was switched off and a local guy would dive in and collect the fish for us. In 3-4 dives we would have collected enough fish for lunch and dinner. The fish so collected were not dead but would be zapped but still breathing.
Actually this fishing tech happened from a debate since we were finding it difficult to catch the fish with our fishing rods and one among us proposed this idea. I was against the idea since my view was that the generator would shortcircuit itself. But when we tried it out it really worked well. When we put our legs into the water with the generator on, there would be a slight tingling sensation near around the surface which would get more stronger as you neared that 3-4 feet radius zone. (but nobody dared to do that with the power on .
I remeber having taken a video of that, will check up the old VCDs and see if i can post the same here for your viewing.
Cheers,
Vijay. |
