CHLORAMINES  IN  BANGALORE  TAP  WATER  !

I  had  a  talk  with  a  friend,  an  Executive  Engineer  of  Bangalore  City  Corporation  this  morning  and  as  usual  complained  about  everything  in  the  city.  Biju  Uthup  had  just  called  me  about  a  few  fish  that  had  died  after  he  made  a  water  change  yesterday.  So  I  mentioned  that  chlorine  levels  are  again  high  and  my  friends  are  having  problems  with  their  aquariums.

BCC  ususally  renews  it's  chlorine  capsules  once  a  year  in  July  and  for  about  a  month  there  is  high  levels  of  chlorine  in  the  water  in  Bangalore.

What  my  friend  told  me  had  me  in  panic  I  quote  -  "  they  are  now  adding  chlorine  that  stays  for  a  long  time  in  water  unlike  chlorine  that  vanishes  in  1-2  days"  He  could  not  identify  it  as  chloramine  as  he  did  not  know,  but  that  is  what  it  must  be  if  it  stays  on  for  a  extended  period.

So  guys  beware  of  water  changes!  AND  read  up  on  chloramine  !.

Hypo  -  Sod.  thiosulphate  will  not  be  effective  as,  though  it  neutralises  the  chlorine  from  the  chloramine  it  instantaneously  releases  ammonia  in  large  doses.

The  solution  is  to  pass  the  water  through  activated  carbon  to  remove  the  chloramine.  None  of  the  commercially  available  dechlorinators  except  Amquel  neutralises  chloramines  and  that  is  not  available  in  India.

DO  NOT  USE  ANY  COMMERCIAL  DECHLORINATOR  THAT  DOES  NOT  SPECIFICALLY  MENTION  IT  NEUTRALISES  CHLORAMINE.

Keeping  the  water  standing  for  a  few  days  will  not  help  with  chloramines  as  it  is  very  stable  and  does  not  break  up  and  vanish  like  chlorine  in  a  day  or  two.

So  please  postpone  the  weekend  water  change  /  tank  maintenance  until  you  are  prepared.

Hey  Guys  No  need  to  worry  about  chloramines  if  you  have  Stress  Coat  made  by  Aquarium  pharmaceuticals,  chalfont  USA.
It  removes  any  chlorine  in  the  tap  water  and  also  Neutralizes  Chloramines  and  provides  lot  of  other  benefits.

As  far  as  i  remember  i  think  there  is  one  bottle  of  it  in  Aquarists  Society  of  Karnataka!

I  have  been  using  AQUASAFE  (Tetra)  for  my  discus  tank  since  the  last  6  months  for  my  Discus  tank.  The  catalogue  enclosed  along  with  the  bottle  says  it  removes  Chloramine.

Why  not  send  an  aquarist  delegation  to  Bangalore  water  works  to  check  on  chemical  used  ?  Maybe  you  can  have  a  look  at  the  packages.  I  think  both  commercial  &  chemical  name  &  composition  will  be  printed  on  package.

 Hi  Ravi,

There  is  nothing  more  than  a  person  who  knows  nothing  at  these  places  and  Bangalore  has  something  like  15  in-city  reservoirs  where  water  is  stored  for  different  areas.  These  are  huge  granite/cement  tanks  built  within  the  city  limits  where  the  cauvery  water  is  initially  stored  and  then  pumped  on  again  to  the  consumers.  All  dosing/disinfecting  etc.,  takes  place  at  these  reservoirs.  I  know  of  one  such  reservoir  where  visitors  are  not  allowed  past  the  gate.

I  need  to  find  a  knowledgeable  person  at  the  BWSSB  -  if  one  exists!  Anyway  I  am  working  on  it.

 Hi,

Any  updates  on  the  water  condition  now  and  action  taken  by  BWSSB.  I  have  not  changed  water  of  my  Discus  tank  since  the  last  15  days.  Plan  to  change  today.  Any  updates.

I  don't  know  about  any  action  taken,  but  better  add  a  chloramine  remover  during  water  changes.  I  have  been  doing  that  weekly  and  everything  is  just  fine.

 Hi:

The  Tap  Water  condition  has  changed  little  bit  around  BSK  area.  The  quantity  of  Chloramines  being  added  has  come  down  by  50%  in  the  Banashakari  Area;  according  to  reliable  sources  from  BSSWB,  Bangalore  South.
Normal  conditions  would  be  back  by  the  end  of  this  month.

I've  been  doing  WC  regularly.  The  only  difference  being  I'm  adding  Water  Conditioner.  I'm  also  adding  Garlic  Elixir        (those  of  you  who  don't  know;  pls  ask  Madan      )  @  5ml  per  100  lts  of  water.

Strangely,  it  keeps  water  clear,  Fishes  love  it    Exclamation    Exclamation
GE  possess  lot  of  Goodies...can't  stop  praising    Smile

 Bye,

Nag  how  do  you  manage  to  collect  this  gaseous  Garlic  Elixir?  Which  restaurant  do  they  serve  the  best  ingredients?

Ravi  need  many  more  emoticons                                these  are  simply  not  enough                    .

On  a  more  serious  note  -  Nag  how  do  you  extract  the  garlic  juice  from  the  cloves...  I  found  it  a  messy  affair.  Do  you  freshly  squeeze  them  out  each  time  you  need  them?  or  are  you  using  any  commercial  product?

I  used  to  squeeze  them  out  of  freshly  peeled  garlic  each  morning  to  mix  with  my  discus  food.

Have  to  be  extremely  careful    with  the  language  from  now  on!  Nag  is  waiting  to  hit  out!

 Hi  Madan:

It's  quite  simple.  I  get  Fresh,  Choosen,  Garlic  about  250  Grams.  Peel  the  outer  layer  of  the  cloves.  Put  them  to  mixer-grinder  till  paste.

Then  take  a  clean  piece  of  white  cloth  and  empty  the  contents  of  the  jar  on  to  it.  Squeeze  it  like  you  squeeze  the  decoction  out  of  coffee  power.

You'll  get  roughly  about  200ml  Garlic  Elixir.  Put  it  in  a  bottle  and  store  in  the  fridge!

Add  5ml  per  100  lts  of  water  during  WCs.

Wash  everything  thoroughly...Else,  the  next  guest  walking  to  you  may  just  collapse
 Regards,
 _______

 Hi:

BTW,  while  washing  you  can  add  a  teaspoonful  of  Vinegar  OR  Baking  Soda.  It  absorbs  all  (foul)  smell  from  hands  and  utensils.

 Bye,
