Just  picked  up  on  this  thread  ,  and  I'm  confused  about  the  Arulius  type  fish  in  both  Marc  and  Hayath's  posts  ,  a  pal  of  mine  had  some  a  few  years  back  ,  what  are  they  ?  A  .tambraparni  I  know  its  the  one  that  develops  the  filaments  ,I  have  no  problem  i.d.ing  it  !  then  there's  A.arulius  its  the  deep  bodied  fish  that  looks  similar  to  the  fish  pictured  on  this  thread  but  as  stated  has  a  deeper  body  in  comparison  to  the  fish  pictured  in  these  posts  SO  my  question  is  what  is  this  fish  ?

I've  brought  up  this  subject  before  ,  and  if  I  remember  correctly  I  was  told  it  was  A.arulius  ?  but  if  so  why  does  it  look  so  different  ?

Is  it  P.exclamatia  ?  only  I've  seen  yet  another  fish  depicted  as  Exclamatia   Surprised

Andy,  This  is  a  question  that  is  not  only  running  in  your  head  but  mine  too.

I  have  come  to  the  conclusion  that  there  are  plenty  of  intermediate  forms  in  the  P.  filamentosus  group  of  fishes   which  are  due  to  exchange  of  genes  early  in  evolution  or  due  to  recent  hybridisation

The  ones  in  the  trade  could  be  hybrids  as  the  P.  filamentosus  group  easily  interbreed.

The  fish  posted  above  were  obtained  from  an  LFS...........could  be  tank  reared  also  thereby  making  the  possibility  of  a  hybrid  between  P.  tambraparniei  and  P.  arulius.

That  a  fair  point  Marc  !  I  thought  i  was  going  mad   Chuckle  only  in  the  past  I  asked  the  question  about  this  fish  and  was  told  it  was  A.arulius  Smile  now  as  a  hobbyist  I  had  kept  the  deeper  bodied  fish  which  is  SUPPOSED  to  be  A.arulius  ,  there  can't  be  two  A.arulius  !

So  this  fish  is  either  the  real  A.arulius  ?

 A  natural  hybrid  ?

A  man  made  hybrid   Wall Bang  can't  stand  em  !

 An  undescribed  sp/  ?

Ahh  this  wonderful  hobby   Thumbs Up  .

That's  mainly  because  of  the  reference  material  that  we  all  use  are  that  old  which  unfortunately  includes  even  the  type  localities.   Now  add  to  the  banging  my  2  cents,  i've  collected  both  filamentosus  &  assimilis  in  the  same  net  and  4  S.denisonii's  in  the  same  waters  with  varying  no  of  stripes,  and  differing  in  the  presence/absence  of  the  caudral  spot.
Do  I  have  to  include  that  I  recently  collected  a  fish  that  looks  like  a  hybrid  of  a  ticto  and  a  Black  Rosy  barb?   Dog

It  seems  the  fish  in  Hyaths  pic  is  Puntius  Rubrotinctus  ,   and  not  Puntius  Arulius  !  one  of  Jerdons  fish  .
