Regarding  feeding  of  good  food  to  discus,  I  have  gone  through  all  the  forums  about  BHM,  before  asking  these  questions.

I  understand  that  beef  heart  is  highly  proteinaceous.  But  what  is  the  problem  if  i  use  goat  heart?  Is  goat  heart  a  good  replacement  for  beef  heart?  Except  the  price,  is  there  any  other  issue  with  respect  to  use  of  gost  heart  in  place  of  beef  heart?

 Hi  Sandipan,
You  are  correct  on  the  fact  that  BHM  is  higher  in  protein  but  what  i  feel  the  will  be  of  15days  growth  difference  under  same  circumstances.  In  the  end  on  both  diet  Discus  will  reach  its  optimum  size.  The  main  thing  about  rearing  a  discus  is  clean  water  and  good  space  and  they  will  grow  fine...   I  have  3  Discus  in  2  feet  tank.  I  feed  them  thrice  a  day  2time  on  Tetra  bits  and  one  time  on  GHM(although  reverse  is  better  2times  on  GHM  and  1  on  Tetra  bits)  i  do  a  50%  water  change  daily.  The  Discus  are  happy  and  merry  and  Disease  free...

 Sandipan  ,

for  discus  you  can  feed  any  animal  heart  ,  it  is  the  question  of  how  much  protein  contains  the  feed  should  have  .  As  per  the  study  on  Discus  diet  ,  Protein  contains  in  Discus  should  not  exceed  more  then  45%  .  If  the  protein  contain  is  more  discus  requires  more  energy  to  digest  it  ,  hence  it  may  have  adverse  effect  on  growth  of  Discus  .

You  can  use  any  land  animal  heart  in  discus  feed  ,  as  per  the  availability  of  it  .
Turkey  heart  ,  Horse  heart  ,  Beef  Heart  ,  Chicken  heart  ,  Goat  heart  ,  Chicken  breast  can  be  feed  to  the  discus  ,  but  the  final  product  should   be  a  balance  diet  for  your  discus  .

 Thanks

 Thanks  Tushar  and  Shiva
I  think  that  means  it  is  safe  to  replace  the  beef  heart  part  with  goat  heart.
I  am  just  plain  curious  to  know  why  was  beef  heart  choosen  over  other  meats  like  gota  heart  and  Chicken  heart?
And  yes  Tushar,  I  am  planning  a  discus  setup.  I  am  almost  ready.  I  will  put  the  tankup  and  running  by  next  two  weeks.

Its  probably  because  the  Discus  strains  took  off  from  Germany.
If  it  took  off  from  the  middle  east  the  favorite  would  have  probably  have  been  goats  heart(halal/Kosher  cut).  Chuckle

It  took  off  in  AMerica  at  about  the  same  time  as  well.

and  why  would  it  still  not  be  halal  ka  beef??

 ..Beef  heart  is  chosen  because
 1.  it  is  easier  to  clean  as  compared  to  others,
->imagine  de-veining  a  turkey  heart  or  chicken  heart,  you  gotta  have  a  surgeons  hand.   Chuckle

 2.  It  is  more  readily  available  in  countries  where  eating  beef  is  the  not  taboo.

 3.  Its  larger  in  size  to  all  other  animals  mentioned,  and  hence  more  meat.

Yes  you  can  substitute  it  for  any  other  heart  mentioned,  but  its  just  a  bit  more  work.
If  you  have  issues  with  Beef,  get  Goat  heart  which  is  good.  Even  an  Ox's  heart  will  be
as  good  as  Cow's,  and  might  be  allowed  or  might  not  be  an  issue...

 Hope  this  helps..

You  are  right.  Beef  heart  is  cheaper,  larger  and  easier.

 Hey  guys,  good  topic,

But  in  a  few  indian  houses,  beef  could  be  an  objection  (just  like  mine).  Yes  its  is  realy  true  that  BHM  works  well,  than  any  other  HMs...

I  had  to  settle  with  just  GHM,  and  on  some  other  forum  and  ours,  it  was  recommended  to  use  atleast  1  capsule  of  garlic  powder  to  kill  worms.  So  I  am  adding  it  since  then.  I  make  my  GHM  myself  as  per  aditya's  recipe.

But  still  BHM  is  the  best  1

Garothmaan,  Most  of  the  time  in  Bangalore  you  get  Buffalo's  heart  not  cow's  heart.  That  is  real  large.
Maybe  you  could  convince  your  home  folks.

   ROFL  Thats  a  nice  one....

Thank  you  for  answering,  but  i  have  a  few  more  questions  whose  answers  i  couldn't  find  in  the  past  forums.
 1.  Shall  i  use  edible  grade  gelatine  powder  as  a  binder?  Or  is  it  that,  no  binder  as  such  is  needed?
 2.  Will  the  use  of  binder  cause  harm  to  my  beloved  fishes?
 3.  In  the  past  forums,  i  have  read  that  the  BHM/GHM  mix  should  be  kept  in  small  zip  lock  packets  in  the  freezer.  Shall  we  freeze  the  whole  mix  together,  then  cut  it  in  to  small  pieces  and  then  again  put  it  in  to  small  zip  lock  packets.  Or  shall  we  put  it  inside  the  refrigerator  after  putting  it  in  to  small  packets?
 4.  How  long  will  it  last,  if  kept  at  the  refrigerator?  What  is  its  shelf  life?
 5.  Also  shall  we  feed  it  after  thawing.  Or  directly  after  taking  out  from  the  refrigerator?

It  will  surely  help  me  immensely  if  i  get  the  above  answers.

Actually  mine  being  a  bit  conservative  family,  beef  is  strictly  not  allowed.  And  not  only  beef,  anything  bovine  is  not  allowed.  that  is  Cow,  buffalo  etc  etc.  That  is  why  i  need  to  make  goat  heart  mix.  Hope  everyone  understands.

Me  Too....  Neither  can  I.  There  is  a  very  open  reason  for  me.  We  parsis  concecrate  the  bulls  urine  to  purify  our  body,  before  we  perform  certian  religious  rituals.  Therefore  cow,  bull,  buffalo  cant  be  used.  sorry  discus  babes...

IMO-  and  the  past  2  months  experience  on  GHM,  I  have  not  yet  delayed  its  deployment..  so  I  dont  realy  know  the  shelf  life  yet

I  am  reposting  few  of  my  questions,  so  that  someone  knowledgeable  answers  it.

Experienced  people  please  clarify  my  doubts...
