How  long  will  the  ADA  soil  last,  assuming  that  it  is  used  for  a  heavily  planted  tank.  how  long  before  it  looses  its  fertility?  If  any  one  has  been  useing  this  for  a  long  time  please  post   the  duration  you  have  used  it  for  bfore  replacing  it  with  a  fresh  stock.

Preetam,  I  have  been  using  ADA  Aquasoil  II  for  over  1.5  years  now  in  my  5  G  tank.  When  I  redid  the  tank  layout  after  the  tank  sprung  a  leak  I  just  took  out  the  Aquasoil  (  be  careful  so  that  you  don't  crush  the  particles  a  lot).  Let  it  dry  in  the  sun  till  it  dries  out  completely  and  reuse  it.  In  this  particular  tank  I  did  not  use  any  power  sand,  so  it  was  easier  to  get  the  Aquasoil  out  easily.  In  tank  with  Aquasoil  +  Powersand,  I  just  remove  the  plants  and  the  hardscape  material  carefully  without  disturbing  the  powersand  bed  below  the  Aquasoil.  Then  just  slope  the  substrate  and  add  a  thin  layer  of  new  Aquasoil  and  start  planting.

hi  bhushan  I  think  U  just  missed  the  answer  to  preeths'  question   Chuckle

I  had  read  in  some  where  that  near  about  3  years  it'll  show  a  dip  in  the  plant  growth;  if  the  plants  purely  feed  on  the  aquasoil.
IF  ferts  are  added  to  the  water  column  then  it  might  last  much  longer....I  think  it  was  Barr  Report.  Confused
knock...knock.....  ADA  Experts!!!!!!  It'll  be  best  if  this  truth/  myth  is  clarified  once  n  for  all.

 rgds,
 Kaushik

Kaushik  ,  I  answered   Preetam's  question  by  giving  the  amount  of  time  I  have  used  a  particular  batch  of  aquasoil  for  and  it  still  grows  plants  fabulously  (  this  is  my  hands  on  experience)  .  Aquasoil  is  black  organic  soil  which  is  heat  treated  to  a  certain  temperature  to  form  granules.  I  am  very  sure  that  any  organic  soil  has  longer  life  in  terms  of  fertility  than  3  years.  IMO  the  question  with  Aquasoil  is  how  long  will  it  maintain  its  granular  form.

To  clear  things  up,  I  want  to  know  that  with  out  adding  extra  firtlizers  ADA  soil  lasts  "  X  "  number  of  months  or  years.

It  does  not  loose  its  granular  texture  for  "  Y  "  number  of  months  or  years.

 Dear  Preetham,

ADA  Aquasoil  is  made  of  from  components  available  in  nature.

As  for  your  question  to  how  long  the  soil  will  be  fertile  ...  please  take  note  that  its  not  only  soil  which  will  enable  to  get  good  plant  growth  but  a  lot  of  other  components  namely  lights,  water  quality,  liquid  fertilizers,  co2  ,  etc..

According  to  studies  conducted  by  ADA  the  soil  is  most  fertile  for  the  first  18  months  after  planting  after  which  it  slowly  starts  loosing  is  fertility..  at  which  stage  we  can  add  additional  fertilizers  to  the  soil  to  keep  it  going  strong.

I  have  seen  ADA  tanks  close  to  6  years  old  without  any  hint  of  nutrient  deficiency.

Please  take  note  that  the  granularity  of  the  soil  will  be  lost  over  a  period  of  time  depending  on  how  you  handle  the  soil...also  the  soil  does  not  loose  its  granularity  at  one  go..the  roots  tend  to  crush  the  soil  as  the  grow  roots  into  the  substrate  so  say  in  a  year  or  two  you  will  see  that  the  soil  level  is  reducing  at  which  stage  you  can  top  up  with  some  additional  aquasoil.

Its  just  like  repotting  a  garden  plant  where  some  old  soil  is  mixed  with  new  soil  for  a  potted  plant  after  a  certain  period.

Nature  aquarium  is  fun..  try  it  out  then  you  will  know  how  much  nature  play  a  role  in  your  tank.

 Regards
 Adip
