 Hi,

My  alpha  male  Yellow  lab  has  developed  a  distinct  black  coloration  around  its  mouth.  Any  idea  what  it  means  and  what  I  should  do?  Tank  is  one  month  old  and  temperature  controlled  with  ammonia  remover  etc  added  during  water  changes  (every  three  days).  I  use  RO  water.

 Cheers....

 Hi  there  !

I've  read  that  Males  of  Electric  Yellows  do  develop  these  masks  around  their  faces  -  I  think  its  perfectly  normal,  but  lets  wait  for  the  experts  to  comment....

Also  check  if  he  is  bullied  around  by  any  other  cichlids  in  your  tank...  cause  i  could  see  a  jewel  cichlid  too..  do  you  more  jewels  ?  they  tend  to  be  aggressive  during  their  breeding  period..  otherwise  they  are  well  behaved  with  cichlids  outside  theri  kind...

Hey  ravi  this  one  is  perfectly  normal   ...  when  we  spoke  on  the  fone  i  thought  it  was  something  really  usualy  like  a  lump  around  the  face  ..so  i  was  inclined  towards  a  fugus  or  prasitic  infection  ...  however  this  is  usualy  seen  in  males  at  the  time  of  spawning  ...  now  comes  the  tough  part  ...incase  any  of  them  spawn  they  will  become  overtly  aggressive  ...and  in  your  15G  quarantine  tank  that  you  have  them  all  in  ...you  gotta  watch  out  ...

Its  now  time  you  moved  into  the  100G  as  quickly  as  you  can  ..and  keep  the  pair  if  you  notice  one  seperated  from  the  rest....  move  the  others  into  a  100G  ASAP.

 Cheers
 nirav

Why  are  you  using  RO  water  in  a  tank  with  rift  lake  cichlids?

Its  mineralized  RO  water.  (Kent  RO)  That's  my  water  source  and  have  been  using  it  in  my  tanks  for  a  while.  It  adds  back  essential  minerals  to  the  water  and  there  is  even  a  way  to  control  how  much.  Plus  much  lesser  white  spots  on  the  tank.

Do  u  see  an  issue?  LFS  guy  told  me  that  since  these  are  Tank  Bred,   they  are  more  tolerant  to  softer  water.

Even  "remineralized"  RO  will  only  have  a  small  fraction  of  the  salts  required  for  these  fish.

While  they  may  be  tolerant  to  softer  water,  they'll  be  much  happier  in  hard,  alkaline  water.  Not  to  mention  it'll  be  cheaper  on  your  wallet  and  save  a  lot  of  water.

Make  sure  you  do  not  move  them  to  hard  and  alkaline  water  suddenly.  Do  it  gradually  by  doing  partial  water  change  with  ground  water.  Read  about  the  fishes  you  keep.

These  black  colouration  generally  develops  to  cichlids  when  water  has  too  much  ammonia/fish  load..  do  a  few  tests  for  ammonia  to  be  assured..  or  sniff  on  the  water  for  bad  smell  before  water  change..  RO  water  is  more  ammonia-prone  than  normal  tap  water..  ammonia  remover  does  not  work  much  for  Aquariums..  its  for  only  drinking  water  in  which  mild  ammonia  is  dissolved..  as  the  tank  is  only  1  month  old  and  u  do  water  changes  every  2-3  days  i  can  pretty  much  guess  your  bio  filtration  is  not  matured..  i  will  advise  you  to  use  50%  RO+50%  tap  water  cycle  for  atleast  15  days  before  u  do  another  water  change..  let  me  know  fish  load  tank  size  and  filtration  system  used..   These  are  not  discus  so  that  u  will  need  so  frequent  water  change  ..  leave  aside  RO....  if  u  see  that  water  is  starting  to  smell  dont  panic..  increase  aeration..  it  should  fade  away  after  a  few  days..  and  DONT  DO  water  change  unless  its  starts  smelling  bad  again  and  water  seems  unclear..  these  fishes  are  hard  enough  to  tolerate  ammonia  spikes  but  may  show  some  symptoms  of  pale  colour  and  black/silvery  skin  around  neck/mouth..  once  your  water  is  stable  u  will  be  able  to  do  water  changes  monthly  (if  your  fish  load  is  not  too  high)..  Let  us  know  tank  size,  filtration  and  what  fishes  u  have  in  the  tank.

 Thanks,

Thanks  Nash,  Thats  a  bit  of  a  relief.  The  rest  of  the  guys  are  fine  so  i  guess  it  could  be  the  alpha  male  showing  its  colours.  I  am  watching  them  carefully.

retro,  the  water  supply  here  in  delhi  is  very  erratic.  For  a  month  you  will  get  pumped  groundwater,  then  suddenly  you  will  start  getting  treated  water  from  a  water  plant.  Then  after  a  month  it  will  be  back  to  ground  water,  and  then  on  some  days  you  even  have  to  call  a  private  water  tanker  to  fill  up  your  underground  and  overhead  tanks.  I  just  thought  that  that  might  be  more  erratic  than  consistently  using  mineralized  RO  water.  Maybe  I  can  add  aquarium  salts  to  it  to  retain  consistency  and  hardness.

Mithun,  thanks  for  your  observations  and  advise.  I  have  tried  purchasing  some  test  kits  but  most  kits  i  fibnd  in  stores  are  expired  because  no  one  here  buys  them.  I'll  watch  out  for  the  smell.  In  view  of  what  i  have  written  above,  do  you  still  recommend  50%  RO  and  50%  Tap?  I  only  change  25%  of  the  water  every  2-3  days  for  the  last  one  month  as  was  advised  in  most  sites.  Isnt  that  correct  procedure?  i.e.  Frequent  water  changes  in  the  1st  month  and  then  spacing  out  the  changes  gradually  till  you  reach  the  once  a  month  stage.

Just  for  everyones  benefit,  I  currently  have  two  15  gallon  tanks  which  I  have  been  using  as  holding  tank  for  my  Mbunas  and  Rainbowfish,  till  my  big  tank  gets  ready.  My  big  tank  will  use  the  Eheim  heater  and  2217  filter  which  I  have  already  purchased.

Tank  1:  1  x  3"  Demasoni,  few  2"  labs,  1  x  small  sucker  cat  for  cleanup  and  2  x  2"  Jewels  (will  be  returning  the  Jewels  tomorrow).  SOBO  internal  filter  1000L  650l/hr,  Boyu  air  pump,  and  enough  hiding  places  for  all  fish.  They  keep  chasing  each  other  around  and  are  generally  active,  especially  during  feeding  time.

 Tank  2:  6  x  1.5"  Rainbowfish  (reds,  australians  and  Boseman),  1  x  2.5"  Shark,  2  x  .75"  Rams,  3  x  1"  Corys,  Eheim  Liberty  hang  Back  Filter  (350l/hr),  Boyu  air  pump,  Black  gravel/slare,  rocks

Food  is  a  mix  of  the  following:  Aquafin  Spriluna  Flakes,  Aquafin  Cichlid  Flakes,  Tetrabit  red  Granules  and  as  a  treat,  Frozen  Blood  worms  twice  a  week.  Btw  fish  food  especially  the  flakes  smell  awful!!

I  haven't  yet  decided  whether  my  big  tank  will  be  a  rift  tank  or  a  community  tank.  Depending  on  the  decision  I  take,  one  set  of  fish  will  go  back  to  the  store  or  to  anyone  who  needs  them  locally.  I  just  bought  the  fish  because  its  not  easy  to  get  most  of  them  here  in  Delhi.  WIll  use  this  time  to  quarantine  them  and  then  slowly  introduce  them  into  the  big  tank  once  that  gets  running.
