 Continued  Nov,Dec-2006  .....

 Huh!  Algae?  What  Algae?
What  type  of  algae  should  I  write  about?  I  am  a  real  Pro  in  growing  Algae  if  I  modestly  say  so  myself.

 Stock  taking  of  Algae....

 Black  Brush/Beard  Algae
I  had  it  mainly  in  my  tank  #3  which  had  low  light  and  rugged  greedy  Cichlids  and  bottom  dwellers.
It  was  mainly  on  the  driftwood  and  filter  corners.
The  only  time  I  had  it  in  my  planted  tank  was  when  it  infested  my  dormant  E.tenellus  leaves.  It  never  touched  any  thing  else  in  that  tank.  After  waiting  for  one  month  for  it  to  go  away,I  simply  cut  the  leaves  near  the  substrate  level.  That  was  the  end  of  the  BBA  as  well  as  E.tenellus  in  that  tank.
People  say  Siamese  Algae  eaters(  Crossocheilus  siamensis)  eats  BBA.  But  the  ones  I  had  never  touched  them,  Who  wants  to  eat  dirty  old  algae  when  there  are  nicer  things  to  be  had?
One  thing  I  observed  was  the  BBA  was  dense  during  summer,  Thinned  during  Rains  and  almost  disappeared  during  winter.  Curious.
BBA  on  E.tenellus  in  tank  #4

 Blue  Green  Algae.
 My  mortal  enemy.
I  had  trouble  with  this  in  my  tank  #1  and  #2.  In  tank  #1  after  one  year  of  being  set  up,  it  started  infesting  the  big  leaves  of  the  Crypts.  In  tank  #2  it  nearly  wiped  out  my  plants.  It  used  to  wax  and  wane  depending  on  my  trimming  of  the  plants.  Also  I  think  my  old  PLL  lighting  may  have  been  partly  responsible.
It  is  not  actually  supposed  to  be  an  Algae  but  Cyanobacteria.  Whatever,  I  know  it  was  a  real  PITA.
Antibiotics  is  supposed  to  get  rid  of  this  BGA.  But  I  never  medicated  my  planted  aquariums.  The  Loss  was  more  than  the  gain  in  medicating  a  planted  tank.
 Tank  #2

 Tank  #1

 Brown  Algae.
I  never  had  much  trouble  with  this.  The  only  time  I  had  it  was  on  my  Anubias  Lancelota  in  my  Otocinclus  affinis  breeding  tank.  It  went  away  by  itself.  It  is  not  actually  supposed  to  be  an  Algae  but  Diatoms.
See  the  Otto  egg  on  a  leaf?

 Green  Water
Again  very  rare  except  in  my  outdoor  tubs  and  tanks  getting  direct  sunlight.  The  only  time  I  had  it  was  in  my  tank  #1  after  a  massive  pruning  of  my  Giant  Vallisneria.  After  30%  water  changes  twice  a  week  for  two  weeks  it  went  away.  By  then  the  Giant  Vallisneria  had  started  growing  again.
 Tank  #1

After  one  week  of  twice  a  week  30%  water  change  regimen.

 Hair/Thread/Green  Algae
My  favorite  algae.  I  generally  had  it  in  my  tubs  or  at  the  top  of  driftwood  near  the  light.  even  the  moss  I  tied  there  would  start  getting  it.  A  lot  of  fishes  eat  it.  But  in  case  it  goes  out  of  hand  I  would  simply  twist  a  old  toothbrush  in  it  and  feed  it  to  my  Cardina  Sp.  Oh,  Did  the  Dwarf  Indian  raibow  shrimps  love  it?
Hair  grass  on  Java  moss  in  my  tank  #6

I  used  to  pack  whatever  grew  in  this  tub  and  give  it  to  Trevor.  He  used  to  feed  his  Lobsters  with  it.

I  was  such  a  master  at  growing  Algae  that  even  my  snails  had  it.  Now  beat  that!

Again  and  again  I  have  come  across  Internet  data  saying  do  this  and  do  that  and  your  Algae  will  go  away.
Simply  false.  Get  the  parameters  right  and  yo  can  reduce  the  Algae.  You  cannot  totally  wish  it  away.

 My  Philosophy...
Algae  is  like  a  pimple  on  the  dimpled  chin  of  a  Pretty  Young  Thing.  Every  pubescent  has  to  have  it  before  she  grows  up  and  participates  in  Miss  India  pageant.  Even  then  there  is  no  guarantee  that  she  will  not  have  one  or  two  after  becoming  Miss  India.

Saturday  and  Sunday  is  chitchat  day.  Please  feel  free  to  post.

 Regards,
 Nayak.

Rahul,Correct  me  if  I  am  wrong.  But  I  had  the  impression  that  Fundulopanchax  and  Aphyosemion  were  the  same.
In  Europe  they  called  Aphyosemion  and  across  the  Atlantic  they  called  Fundulopanchax.
In  fact  I  remember  reading  a  Killie  site  from  America  where  an  author  mentions  that  he  doesn't  dare  mention  the  name  Fundulopanchax  to  his  European  friends.

Nope,  they  are  separate  genera.  And  both  names  are  used  on  both  sides  of  the  Atlantic.  Their  generic  status  has  been  established  for  close  to  10  years  now.

Aphyosemion  has  been  further  sub-divided  into  Chromaphyosemion  (the  bivittatum  group),  Scriptaphyosemion  (these  two  genera  are  considered  by  some  to  be  sub-genera  of  Aphyosemion),  Episemion  and  Diapteron.

Edit:  And  I  forgot  Callopanchax  (which  used  to  be  Roloffia  for  a  while)  and  Archiaphiosemion.

Thanks,Rahul.  Now  I  have  to  read  up  on  them.

 Well,  Here  goes...

 Jan-07
Trevor  and  Venkat  from  Chennai  arranged  to  get  Blood  worms  to  Bangalore.  Since  Trevor  insists  it  is  all  Venkat's  fault,  I  will  thank  only  Venkat.  Thank  you,Sir.  That  was  a  kind  gesture.  It  helped  me  breed  a  lot  of  fishes.
Also  thank  you  for  your  hospitality  during  Aquatika  2007.

 Dec-07.
I  stripped  my  tanks.I  shifted  my  house.  Thanks  to  Mayur  who  made  it  easier  for  me.
Tank#4  left  hand  side  just  before  stripping.

Tank  #4  right  hand  side  just  before  stripping.

Logically  this  thread  was  supposed  to  end  here.  But  on  popular  demand  I  am  continuing  it  to  present  and  future.

 Nov-08
 Present.
 On  Aquatic  front  -  A  big  0.

 Dec-09
 Future.
An  even  bigger  question  mark.  ?

Acknowledgements-  I  wish  to  thank  my  seniors  Madan,Adip,Ravi,Venkat  ,Beta  and  Nikhil  for  their  selfless  support  in  helping  me  evolve  my  hobby.

A  special  thanks  to  Trevor  Menezes,  The  Honourable  Secretary  of  ASK,  My  friend  and  guide,  Without  whose  help,Inputs  and  encouragement  I  would  not  have  been  the  hobbyist  that  I  am  today.

Thanks  to  all  my  friends  on  IAH  and  God  bless.

 Regards,
 Nayak.

 Well,  Well,  Well,
PYT's  again  in  the  thread,  Rasik  you  truly  justiify  your  name.  ROFL
It  is  too  good  to  end,  you  cannot  jump  from  2006  to  2008,  not  fair.
It  is  not  just  your  vast  aquatic  skills,  but  your  supreb  writing  skills  which  have  made  this  a  truly  memorable.

Hi  Nayak  my  broadband  was  disconnected  due  to  change  of  address  and  was  busy  in  the  new  place,  still  yet   get  a  new  connection  tho'.After  a  long  time  I  mustered  enough  courage  to  log  from  a  public  Cyber  Cafe  today.

Well  after  going  thro  the  postings  I  am  shocked   Shocked  at  finding  that  you  have  abruptly  ended  midway. To  be  honest  there  are  great  many  things  learnt  from  this  thread   and  was  still  hoping  to  add  many  more  to  knowledge  .There  were  so  many  references  to  many  unheard  members  which  cropped  up  here  and  really  enjoyed  going  thro   and  getting  to  know  them.  Smile

There  is  a  wealth  of  info  in  this  thread  which  can  be  a  handyman's  (hobbyist)  Bible.Like  so  many  others  have  already  expressed  that  they  have  run  out  of  expletives  ,  as  a  new  member  I  am  very  much  interested  in  the  detailed  and  vivid  recollections  brought  out  by  you.  Thumb Up

The  pic  Tank  #  4  is  really  fantastic   and  that  is  a  kind  of  set  up  which  I  have  been  dreaming  for  long  time.....I  hope  set  one  similar  to  that  with  lots  of  help  from  you...........will  get  in  touch  once  the  tank  ready.

I  would  be  delighted  if  you  continue  running  this  thread  and  keep  us  in  the   know  and  also  give  us  a  peek  into  the  past.  Chuckle

 Regards,
 Dinesh
