I  may  be  wrong  but  doesn't  carbon  media  have  a  2-3  months  life  once  used?

 actually  the  question  is  confusing,,

if  its  carbon  sponge  media  then  u  can  use  it  for  lifetime.

but  if  its  activated  carbon  particles  then  after  3  months  of  continuous  use  they  are  potentially  useless

What  is  carbon  sponge  media?  Do  you  mean  the  normal  sponge  pads?

I  mean  the  round  carbon  pad  that  comes  inside  the  Eheim  2217.

I  take  it  that  it  can  be  rinsed  and  re-used  indefinitely?  Although  someone  was  mentioning  that  once  the  carbon  pad  gets  saturated,  it  releases  back  the  same  chemicals  that  it  removed  from  the  water.

So  just  rinsing  de-saturates  the  carbon  pad???

 I  had  asked  this  question  some  time  back.  please  go  through  Nitin's  reply  on   that  thread  {quoted  below}

The  idea  behind  replacing  carbon  media  once  every  3  weeks  is  that  they  tend  to  become  useless  after  that.

What  Activated  Carbon  does  is  called  adsorption,  a  process  by  which  it  attracts  and  holds  toxins.  In  simpler  words,  it  removes  all  smells  from  your  water,  and  polishes  it  fine,  thereby  making  it  look  crystal  clear.  Thats  the  good  it  does.  The  downside  about  Activated  Carbon  is  that  it  lets  out  all  the  stuff  it  collected  at  the  end  of  its  life,  thats  roughly  21  to  25  days.  So,  it  could  be  disastrous.

What  I  normally  do  is,  if  I  use  granular  AC,  I  pull  it  out  after  3  weeks  and  throw  it  out.  I  wouldnt  want  to  take  a  risk  after  that.

With  the  carbon  pad  in  Eheim,  what  I  do  is,  pull  it  out  after  3  weeks,  and  wash  it  well,  and  let  it  dry.  I  use  it  like  a  normal  sponge  after  a  week.

And  as  someone  else  said,  carbon  isnt  really  necessary  for  a  planted  setup.  Will  actually  do  more  bad  than  good.  In  planted  setups,  I  use  carbon  ONLY  when  I  need  water  clarity  in  2  days  real  urgent,  for  a  photo  shoot  or  stuff  like  that.

Hope  that  quite  answers  your  doubts  !

The  Carbon  Sponge  is  just  another  form  of  media  impregnated  with  activated  carbon.

 Excerpts  from  the  WEBSITE

If  the  carbon  sponge  is  left  in  the  filter  too  long,  it  can  release  the  chemicals  again  into  the  water.
Consequently,  it  is  recommended  to  replace  the  carbon  sponge  every  4  weeks.

I  would  change  the  pad  every  month.  With  your  kind  of  setup  i  dont  think  you  actually  need  a  carbon  pad.  Just  keep  one  lying  around.  Incase  the  water  gets  stained  or  smells  foul  just  hook  it  up.  Infact  what  I  do  is  use  a  hang  on  the  top  filter  with  activated  carbon  granules  in  them.  If  i  see  anything  wrong  or  smell  in  the  tank  i  run  that  filter  for  a  couple  of  days.  Once  the  water  is  clear  again  ..  i  just  throw  that  activated  carbon  away.  I  usualy  would  do  this  once  in  month.  The  Qty  of  carbon  that  i  utilize  is  hardly  200Gms.  So  it  really  isnt  that  exepensive  throwing  it  away  after  1  or  2  uses.

But  the  answer  to  your  question  is  ..that  the  lifespan  as  per  me  of  that  pad  would  be  max  of  1month  on  high  bio  loads  and  people  using  substances  in  their  tanks  which  would  leach.  Like  gravel,  decorations,  stones  etc...

I  would  recommend  that  you  rid  the  pad  off  with  a  regular  coarse  /  fine  filter  pad  and  keep  a  small  hang  on  filter  with  you  with  activated  granules  lying  spare  to  swing  it  into  action  as  and  when  required.

 Cheers
 nirav

I  did  mention  that  If  its  activated  carbon  then  you  should  change  it  periodically.  But  if  its  not  activated  carbon  then  it  just  does  biological  and  mechanical  filtration..  not  any  kind  of  chemical  absorption..  inert  carbon  is  unable  to  do  chemical  absorption..  the  period  after  which  it  should  be  changed  depends  on  what  kind  of  water  u  are  using(RO  or  non-RO)  and  amount  of  dosing/waste  production..  ideally  no  dosing  should  be  done  while  activated  carbon  is  in  contact.  And  BTW  not  all  carbon  sponges  are  activated  carbon..  mostly  they  are  not..  non-activated  carbon  sponge  is  used  in  filters  for  longer  life..

I  do  know  what  i  am  talking  about..  so  before  u  doubt  someone's  reading/understanding  make  sure  u  did  read/understand  it  correctly

Ok  folks  lets  stick  to  the  topic  !  ..I  think  Ravi's  question  is  very  direct.  Talking  about  the  carbon  pad  in  the  Eheim  2217.  So  I  think  we  should  respond  only  to  that.

If  we  want  to  share  our  inputs  on  Activated  carbon  Vs  Carbon  Sponge  lets  start  a  new  topic  over  it  and  not  hit  into  someones  thread.

We  all  have  our  own  individual  experiences  and  thats  what  the  whole  forum  is  all  about  to  share  them.  It  is  eventually  upto  the  reader  on  whose  advice  they  need  to  pick  from.

 cheers
 nirav.

Hi  Mithun...  Thanks  for  the  replies.  My  first  post  actually  mentions  2217.  I  dont  know  too  many  cannisters  so  i  just  thought  2217  would  be  enough  without  stating  Eheim  in  particular.  My  apologies  for  the  confusion.

So  basically  to  summarize,  activated  carbon  is  a  no-no  after  some  time  and  anyways  its  best  kept  for  emergencies  to  correct  chemical  imbalances/foul  smells  etc.

So  is  the  Carbon  in  the  sponge  'Activated'  or  not??
