 All,
I  have  been  around  in  IAH  for  almost  3.5  years  now.  I  have  seen  lot  of  ups  and  downs,  still  remember  the  server  issue  we  had  for  which  IAH  was  down  for  few  days,  lot  of  issue  with  upgrades  etc.  IAH  overcame  all  these  and  has  been  running  strong  !
But  for  last  a  year  or  so,  few  things  in  IAH  are  really  very  disturbing  to  me  !!  I  am  not  sure  about  others,  so  starting  this  discussing  to  know  if  it  is  only  me  or  others  are  also  in  same  boat  with  me  ...
 1.  Quality  of  discussion:  Nowadays  the  most  of  the  discussion  we  are  having  in  IAH  no  longer  attracts  me.  I  believe  as  a  forum  gets  matured,  the  level  of  discussion  also  would  go  levels  high.  We  always  have  scope  for  beginers  to  ask  basic  questions,  but  it  should  not  stop  a  forum  to  achieve  new  highs.  This  is  what  completely  missing  here.  It  is  not  like  our  hobby  is  slowly  getting  stagnent,  rather  we  are  missing  all  those  topics  and  wasting  our  time  for  something  else...
 2.  Missing  old  members  :  I  have  been  noticing  over  a  period  of  time  that  members  who  were  contributing  a  lot  once  upon  a  time  suddenly  went  missing.  I  know  Madan  is  not  available  for  half  the  year,  but  what  about  Nauzer,  Pappu  sen,  Rgg,  Arnab  Mandol  and  et  all???  is  it  like  IAH  is  no  longer  a  interesting  place  for  them  ?  I  don't  know  if  this  is  one  of  the  reasons  not  to  have  more  quality  topics  in  IAH.
 3.  Too  much  commercialization:  Off  late  I  could  see  too  much  posts  in  LFS  announcement  section.  I  don't  see  any  harm  in  it,  but  IAH  should  not  become  a  place  just  for  LFS  annoucement.  There  were  lot  of  discussions  on  this,  but  I  don't  see  any  change.
 4.  Handling  difficult  situation:This  is  not  directly  related  to  the  recent  discussion  (  if  I  call  it  so)  on  'Discussing  price  in  IAH',  but  definately  it  has  some  effect.  I  have  seen  a  lot  of  argument  and  counter  argument  on  different  topics  in  IAH  before,  but  it  never  went  out  of  control  or  got  into  a  very  bad  taste.  But  in  last  1  year  or  so,  whatever  be  the  reason  we  always  ended  up  in  a  pathetic  situation.  It  is  indeed  a  shame  for  us.  IAH  and  it's  moderators  are  no  longer  new  and  now  should  have  experienced  enough  to  take  care  of  such  situations  more  professionaly.

So  don't  we  all  need  to  pause  for  a  moment  and  think  what  we  wanted  to  achieve  through  IAH,  where  we  have  reached  so  far  and  what  is  our  next  course  of  actions  to  make  IAH  reach  a  new  high  ???

Well,  I  agree  with  Sibesh  on  Point  1totally.   It  is  the  exact  feeling  that  I  have  been  having  for  quite  some  time.  If  any  one  observes,  my  posts  have  reduced  greatly  in  number.  Not  that  the  world  is  coming  to  an  early  end  due  to  it  but  I  simply  do  not  find  topics  where  I  can  participate,  off  late.

Regarding  commercialisation,  I  think  it  is  good  for  hobbyists,  but  ideally  the  forum  should  stay  impartial  to  it.

 Hi  Sibesh,

I  have  been  around  IAH  for  a  while  as  well.  So  i  will  try  and  look  at  your  points  from  my  point  of  view.  I  do  not  agree  or  disagree  with  what  you  say,  its  your  point  of  view  to  which  you  like  every  member  is  entitled  to.

With  regards  to  quality  of  discussions,  i  think  with  India  being  so  young  in  the  hobby  i  guess  you  will  find  a  lot  of  new  young  entrants  asking  questions  what  we  already  know  and  i  guess  it  is  upto  them  to  look  around  the  website  and  find  if  things  have  already  been  discussed.  But  if  anyone  does  ask  a  question  he  does  get  help.

Old  members,  well  its  for  them  to  answer  but  you  do  have  very  very  experienced  hobbyists  still  around.  People  like  Rahul,  Beta  and  the  likes.  I  mean  i  would  rather  make  use  of  these  guys  to  learn  how  much  you  can  because  they  know  tons  and  tons.  As  for  them  staying  away  because  of  quality  of  tpoics,  i  dont  think  so  but  if  it  is.  I  think  if  they  are  so  knowlegeable  they  must  take  the  intiative  to  start  such  threads,  things  that  beginners  will  not  know.  In  the  same  way  it  is  the  responsibility  of  each  and  every  one  of  us  to  futher  our  hobby  and  our  knowledge.

IAH  is  just  a  portal  to  share  knowledge  and  the  admins  and  mods  cannot  control  the  quality  of  posts,  because  this  is  the  base  to  launch  the  Indian  hobby.  Give  it  sometime,  i  would  say  rather  post  something  intersting  which  other  knowledgeable  people  will  reply  to.

As  for  commercialisation  i  have  said  this  once  before,  IAH  does  not  run  free  and  each  day  as  the  size  of  this  portal  increases  so  do  costs,  it  is  not  fair  to  ask  the  mods  and  admins  to  pay  from  their  pocket  when  they  can  get  some  help  from  people  who  all  willing  to  pay  for  a  bit  of  the  running  of  this  wonderful  website.  Also  this  helps  us  get  more  information  about  products  and  actually  not  get  swindled  by  some  LFS.  So  it  helps  all  of  us.

As  for  the  latest  eruption  in  a  discussion,  all  i  will  say  is  we  are  all  old  enough  and  should  be  mature  enough  to  know  what  to  say  when.  Mods  are  also  almost  our  age  but  they  dont  want  to  interfere  all  the  time  because  we  as  members  should  know  what  we  need  to  say  and  when.  If  rules  are  laid  down  they  are  for  all  of  us,  but  if  we  do  break  them  then  repurcussions  are  or  should  be  normal.

These  are  just  my  views  but  in  no  way  disputing  what  anyone  thinks  or  feels.  Just  try  and  enjoy  your  stay  here.  Its  always  easy  to  find  problems  but  if  you  do  find  a  solution  too.  That  would  be  a  definite  contribution  to  this  website  and  to  the  hobby  in  general.

 Warm  Regards

 Hi  Sibesh,

Thanks  for  starting  a  must  need/read  thread.

Like  Nikhil  said  -  I  do  not  agree  or  disagree  with  what  you  say,  its  your  point  of  view  to  which  you  like  every  member  is  entitled  to.

Before  WE  continue,  I  request  each  &  every  (new/old)  members  to  read  the  forum  guidelines  for  one  more  time  to  know  the  things  better.

 Forum  Guidelines  :
 Forum  Rules  -  DOs

 -  Join,  lurk,  then  post.  Spend  some  time  &  read  as  many  posts  as  possible  &  check  on  what's  available  &  what's  not.  Find  out  what  acceptable  on  the  forums  &  what's  not.

 -  Read  FAQ.  Check  out  the  Frequent  Asked  Questions  section.  Answers  to  your  queries  may  be  there.

 -  Search  before  posting.  Please  search  the  forum  before  posting.  Your  topic  might  already  been  covered.  In  that  case,  we  suggest  that  you  reply  to  that  post  instead  of  starting  new  all  over  again.

 -  Post  in  appropriate  topic  area.  Start  a  new  topic  under  appropriate  heading.  For  example,  queries  on  Discus  should  be  in  Discuss  Discus  under  Fresh  Water  Fishes.  A  query  on  Discus  illness  must  be  posted  in  Diseases  &  Cures  under  Fresh  Water  Fishes.

 -  Post  on  same  topic.  Replies  must  be  relevant  to  the  previous  postings  and  the  heading.  A  post  with  the  heading  "Breeding  Discus"  should  have  posts  relevant  to  breeding  Discus  &  should  not  change  over  to  Discus  illness  or  Discus  tank  requirements.  This  is  help  viewers  when  they  are  searching  for  a  particular  topic.  For  example,  viewer  looking  for  "Discus  Illness  and  Cures"  will  miss  it  because  the  heading  says  "Breeding  Discus",  but  the  discussion  is  on  "Discus  Illness".

 -  Post  new  queries.  If  you  need  answers  to  queries  which  are  related  but  not  exactly  same  topic,  start  a  new  tread.

 -  Post  with  same  tone.  This  means  that  when  there  is  a  serious  discussion  going  on,  you  should  not  post  a  joke  or  light  hearted  comment.

 -  Post  your  own  work.  All  your  postings  MUST  be  your  own  work.  Please  respect  copyright.  Do  not  post  anything  from  from  any  published  work.  This  includes  anything  from  other  sites,  books,  CDs,  eBooks  or  emails.   Please  include  a  link  to  the  other  site  instead.  Or,  mention  the  name  of  the  book  &  the  viewers  might  want  to  look  it  up.

 -  Post  in  English.  Please  post  only  in  English.  Avoid  other  languages,  since  other  users  may  not  understand  them.

 -  Post  using  good  language.  Please  make  sure  that  your  posts  are  well  written  in  terms  of  grammar,  spelling,  style,  with  appropriate  words  capitalised,  etc.  Please  avoid  SMS  language.  Please  DO  NOT  type  the  entire  post  with  capital  letters.

 -  Post  with  appropriate  topic  heading.  Please  post  descriptive  headings.   "Help  me,   please",  "I  need  help",  "I  have  a  question",  "Big  problem",  "URGENT"  are  examples  of  bad  headings.  Good  one  are  "Ideal  sizes  for  a  planted  tank",  "How  do  I  clean  white  lines  on  old  aquarium  glass?",  "Filter  and  lights  for  a  six  feet  aquarium".

I  know  each  person  has  his  or  her  views  and  preferences.  So  here  is  mine.   I  have  been  reading  lately  of  too  much  commercialization  etc.  Frankly  would  be  delighted  to  see  further  commercialization  in  a  perfectly  controlled  manner  on  IAH.

But  before  that  I  am  a  recent  member.  Before  joining  IAH  I  was  dependent  on  a  couple  of  LFS  I  knew  and  their  wrong  advice.  I  knew  that  some  of  their  instructions  were  beyond  common  sense.  But  only  after  joining  IAH  I  got  proper  perspective  from  so  many  serious,  passionate,  hobbyists  willing  to  help  each  other  without  expecting  anything  in  return.  Members  like  Kaushik  and  others  (too  many  to  mention  individually)  has  put  in  countless  posts  and  messages  to  educate  me.  I  (and  my  LFS)  had  no  idea  about  the  whiptail  catfish  till  Sir  Trevor  identified  it.  Members  here  have  NO  obligation  whatsoever  to  spend  their  time  and  money  to  educate  others.  I  can  say  from  experience  in  my  domain  of  expertise,  that  I  have  been  there,  done  that  in  different  forums  and  can  understand  how  it  feels.

Now  coming  back  to  commercialization,  God  bless  IAH.  When  I  want  to  buy  something  I  have  so  many  sellers  all  over  India  to  tap  into,  from  Rocky  nearby  to  Deepak,  Suraj  and  others.  I  get  the  best  stuff  from  whoever  has  it  at  a  good  price,  rather  than  returning  empty  handed  from  my  LFS  or  he  asking  me  to  pay  a  huge  premium  to  get  such  a  "small"  item  specifically  for  me.  So  there  is  this  virtue  of  commercialization  too.  And  why  commercial  sellers,  there  are  other  members  too  who  exchange,  sell  or  even  give  away  FREE,  stuff  that  they  have  extra.

Anyway,  excuse  my  long  rambling,  but  I  love  being  here,  and  notwithstanding  few  hiccups  and  ironing  out  differences,  I  am  sure  IAH  will  become  even  better  in  coming  days.

I  completely  agree  with  Sibesh  On  point  1  But  at  the  same  time  feel  that  the  forum  is  still  vibrant  and  unique.
Also  I  feel  that  the  quality  of  Iah.in  can  not  be  controlled  by  the  administrators  rather  than  the  Forum  members.  Its  the  Pan  Indian  Fish  keeping  communities  mirror  image  being  shown  here.
With  the  spread  of  Net  more  and  more  people  from  all  strata  will  join  here  and  as  a  result  we  will  get  more  stories  and  experience  from  them.
Finally  really  appreciate  Rockys  Do  and  Don't  and  believe  that  if  everyone  follow  the  same  automatically  the  QM  will  be  high.
 Regards
 Kaushik

 Hi  Sibesh,

As  one  of  the  senior  members  (in  terms  of  how  long  we  have  all  been  on  IAH),  you  have  been  pretty  isolated  yourself.  The  number  of  posts  show  a  person's  interaction  on  the  forum.

You  did  find  that  Nauzer,  RGG  etc  are  missing  in  the  picture.  I  miss  you  too   Very Happy  Honest.

If  every  member  has  an  useful  contribution  and  takes  it  as  a  part  of  the  responsibility  to  teach  and  learn,  IAH  is  the  one  to  gain.

You  could  start  by  posting  pictures  of  your  tanks,  the  work  that  went  into  it,  your  successes  (people  get  to  try  out  your  ideas),  failures  (yes,  your  failure  will  prevent  others  from  re-inventing  the  wheel).

Let's  stop  complaining,  cursing,  wondering,  imagining  and  let's  start  posting.  You  take  a  step  forward,  a  couple  more  feet  will  follow.

well  imo  if  watever  happens  yesterday  was  just  because  of  commercialization  then  i  think  its  the  duty  of  each  and  every  iahian  to  contribute  and  i  am  the  first  to  contribute  any  amount  happily.i  can  understand  a  site  with  lacs  of  pages  is  not  running  for  free  so  i  dont  think  their  is  any  problem  by  keeping  an  annual  membership  fee.i  think  we  should  treat  IAH   as  a  family  with  each  of  us  its  member  and  their  will  be  no  difference  between  a  newbie  or  a  administrator.and  in  a  family  every  one  is  important  and  every  member  of  family  has  some  responsbility  towards  the  family.i  am  still  very  new  to  this  forum  but  i  can  sense  like  many  others  too  that  members  here  are  divided  in  groups  who  interact  within  themselves  and  left  others  alone.may  be  that  is  the  reason  why  old  members  are  missing.i  know  many  of  us  is  not  agree  with  me  but  still  just  think  for  a  moment  am  i  wrong  ?

Siblesh,  It  is  experienced  long  time  members  like  you  who  should  post  interesting  topics  on  IAH.
If  long  time  members  like  you  do  not  post  whom  do  you  expect  to  post  for  the  discussion  to  reach  new  and  higher  levels.

Regarding  the  four  missing  persons  Nauzer  and  Pappu  Sen  are  commercial  aquatic  entities  who  depend  on  it  for  their  livelihood.
They  will  have  they  own  set  of  priorities  and  we  have  to  respect  them.

rgg  from  Bangalore  has  given  up  on  the  hobby.  Hope  its  only  temporary.

The  last  guy  Arnab  Mondal  I  do  not  recollect  and  so  cannot  comment.

A  lot  of  members  becoming  commercial   -  a  good  thing  or  not  I  really  do  not  know.  But  there  are  definitely  more  choices  for  the  hobbyists  now.
If  you  want  the  hobby  to  reach  new  heights  you  Siblesh  and  others  like  you  have  to  start  posting  your  experiences.

Please  go  through  Nayaks  "  Memories  walking  the  hobby  with  the  help  of  IAH"

I  for  one  have  never  seen  an  aquatic  thread  that  will  come  even  close  in  the  whole  world  wide  aquatic  web.

For  your  information  Aravind  Adiga  this  year's  Man  Brooker  prizewinner,  Nayak  and  myself  come  from  the  same  school.

Sorry  for  the  boast.  Just  could  not  help  it.  If  everyone  contributes  there  is  nothing  stopping  us.

Hi  Guys...  I  dont  post  much  on  this  forum  and  i  really  apologize  for  it.

First  and  Foremost:  what  i  am  in  the  Aqua  hobby  today  is  absolutely  because  of  IAH  nothing  else.  Whatever  knowledge  that  i  have  i  because  of  the  friends  that  i  have  in  IAH  (cant  mentioned  names,  as  there  are  many).  From  the  days  where  i  spend  loads  of  money  on  my  local  LFS  and  end  up  guttering  the  money  by  killing  the  fish  or  equipment  due  to  non-availability  of  proper  knowledge  to  today  where  i  atleast  have  the  basic  knowledge  of  whether  an  LFS/seller  is  taking  me  for  a  ride  and  to  keep  whatever  i  have   alive  -  i  need  to  thank  each  and  every  one  of  IAH.

I  totally  accept  with  the  view  of  Nikhil  on  people  asking  repeated  questions,  as  they  are  basic  questions  asked  again  and  again  by  newbies  on  the  site  to  improve  their  knowledge  -  We  did  that  too  at  one  too.

With  regards  to  the  quality  of  discussions,  we  here  in  India  are  controlled  by  many  external  factors  such  as  what  we  can  have  and  what  we  cannot  have  (like  marine  stuff)  hence  people  who  have  those  stuff  are  reluctant  to  discuss  about  them  which  actually  takes  most  of  the  interesting  part  out.  Whereas  in  other  countries  the  resources  are  so  flooded  with  including  knowledge  the  kind  of  people  who  interact  there  have  so  much  wealth  of  knowledge  to  share  and  we  are  in  an  embryonic  stage  of  the  hobby  where  most  of  us  are  still  in  the  learning  space.

Hence  looking  at  the  quality  of  the  discussions  -  if  you  feel  they  dont  interest  you  more,  then  kindly  bring  in  more  topics  that  interest  you  -  why  feel  others  are  not  getting  topics  that  interest  you.  Be  the  First  to  Initiate.

With  regards  to  the  commercials,  it  is  a  universal  norm.  If  someone  wants  to  comment  and  krib  about  it,  why  cant  we  just  ignore  such  posting?

When  I  had  a  deep  discussion  with  Randy-Farley-Homes  (the  Guru  for  Chemistry  on  Reef  Tanks  in  www.reefcentral.com)  he  gave  a  very  simple  solution  :When  a  topic  goes  off  the  roof  to  spoil  the  forum  they  dont  immediately  ban/block  that  topic.  They  simply  automatically  delete  all  the  new  comments  entered  by  other  people  in  the  post  -  hence  the  person  who  is  aggravating  the  situation  feels  that  there  is  no  one  to  respond  and  it  just  vanishes  into  thin  Air,  gone  and  forgotten.  Basically  an  under  the  table  route  to  prevent  such  issues.

I  would  finally  like  to  say  that  IAH  is  a  place  to  share  knowledge,  and  not  just  Extract  Knowledge  so  post  more  and  learn  more.

And  i  Certainly  will  from  now  on   Very Happy

 All,
Thanks  for  atleast  giving  some  thoughts  on  the  topic....  My  intension  was  no  way  to  hurt  some  individuals  or  going  against  any  practice  followed  in  IAH.  I  just  wanted  to  see  whatever  I  am  thinking  as  some  problem  is  really  the  problem  or  not.  If  we  achknowledge  that  there  is  some  problem  then  only  we  can  start  finding  a  solution  to  it,  it  can  be  more  posting  from  my  side  !
For  the  missing  members,  It  was  just  an  observation.  I  personally  never  interacted  with  most  of  the  names  I  mentioned.  I  just  pointed  out  the  names  came  to  my  mind  ...  Don't  take  it  otherwise.
I  never  said  commercialization  is  bad.  But  somehow  my  feeling  is  it  is  becoming  the  main  topic  of  the  forum.  It's  purely  my  personal  opinion,  not  to  hurt  anyone.
After  reading  all  the  posts,  now  my  feeling  is  most  of  us  happy  with  the  way  IAF  is  running.  So  let's  not  waste  much  time  on  this  thread,  rather  enjoy  our  stay  in  IAH.

I  completely  agree  with  Nikhil.  IAH  does  a  good  job  in  bringing  together  people  in  various  levels  in  the  hobby,  giving  experienced  people  to  experiment  and  share  ideas,  and  new  ppl  a  chance  to  learn  the  best  methods.  I  for  one  am  definitely  happy  with  what  is  available  for  me  in  IAH.   Thumb Up
