Hello...  I  have  to  suggest  a  filter  for  a  tank,  which  is
 6ft  length  X  2ft  Ht  X  1.5ft  wdth
The  branded  filters  like  eheim  are  going  way  off  the  budget.  I  was  thinking  on  a  DIY  wet  and  Dry  Trickle  filter.  I  wanted  to  know,  what  minimum  sized  tank  should  be  used  for  the  filter?  what  all  filter  materials  should  be  used?  The  tank  will  be  home  to  Oscars  mainly.  Any  pointers  will  be  of  great  help...

 Thanks  in  advance,
 Humaid.

For  a  tank  of  that  size  a  trickle  filter  will  have  to  be  enormous  to  be  effective.

A  sizable,  well-designed  and  well-constructed  sump  will  give  most  expensive  canister  filters  a  run  for  their  money.  Do  a  sump.

I  went  through  the  entire  article.  My  idea  is  that  instead  of  the  siphon,  which  might  break  incase  of  power  failure,  I  can  get  a  hole  drilled  in  the  sump  and  get  the  water  down  into  the  main  tank  through  the  overflow.

and  I  was  a  bit  confused  as  to  what  filter  materials  to  use...  Can  I  use  the  Naylon  cotton  available  in  the  first  chamber?  where  can  I  get  blue  metal  chips?  what  kind  of  pump  is  sufficient?  Is  it  better  to  use  a  UG  Filter  in  the  main  tank  and  supply  water  from  below  it  into  the  sump,  since  most  of  the  debri  are  always  stuck  in  the  gravel?

Have  you  got  the  idea  of  the  japanese  water  fountain?  http://www.kineticfountains.com/traditional-bamboo-water-spout.asp?idcategory=

 http://faq.thekrib.com/filters.html#why

 Filter  needs

create  1  at  home  which  will  create  auto  movements  by  hydraulics,  I  made  1  at  home  which  was  having  a  minaiture  windmill  attached  to  it  for  moving  the  bamboo  scoop.

The  sump  on  IAH  is  the  best  method  for  filter  construction.   there  is  a  media  for  different  filteration  material

Humaid  if  you  keep  the  sump  above  the  tank  then  the  motor  needs  to  be  placed  into  the  main  display  tank...

if  you  are  going  to  maintain  a  sump  make  sure  all  your  equipments  and  motors  rest  in  the  sump.

Best  is  to  have  your  sump  below  the  tank,  and  send  the  return  to  the  main  tank...  drill  a  couple  of  3-4mm  holes  in  the  return  pipe  about  1/2"  from  the  water  level  in  the  main  tank  -  this  will  prevent  the  back-siphone  of  water  from  the  main  tank  in  case  of  power  failure.

apart  from  that  design  teh  sump  with  partitions  to  get  the  various  layers  of  filtration  inside  the  sump.

dont  use  blue  metal  chips.  they  say  it  will  work,  but  i  havent  seen  it  doing  anything  -  my  experience  guys.

Thanks  for  your  help  Perikaruppan.  But  there  is  no  place  to  keep  the  sump  below  the  tank.  The  pump  will  be  placed  in  the  main  tank...

just  for  aesthetics  i  mentioned  so..  but  if  you  have  no  provision  then  shift  it  up  ..  but  you  will  have  problems  maintaining  the  sump  due  to  the  height..  look  into  that  also.

Well,  I  have  considered  the  height  and  all,  its  not  posing  any  problem.  Now  all  I  need  to  finalise  are  the  filter  materials  and  the  size  of  the  sump...
