 Venket,

I  used  some  KONTAK  yesterday  (1/3  the  recommeded  dose).  What  should  I  do  now?  Should  I  change  the  water.  Also,  I  notice  several  baby  snails  creeping  around  the  top  of  the  water.  What  do  I  do  about  that?

 Ravi,

Thanks  for  your  input.  I  have  just  started  the  tank  5  days  ago  and  haven't  yet  got  any  fish  inside.

 Best  regards,
 Sirish.

Sirish,  remember  to  introduce  the  algae  eating  fishes  first.

 Hi  Beta,

Thanks  for  the  tip.  I  was  planning  to  order  6  SAEs  with  Kiran.  I  have  about  12  Corys  in  another  small  temporary  tank  with  some  other  cats.  Are  these  also  algae  eaters.  What  other  algae  eaters  do  you  suggest  and  roughly  when  can  they  be  introduced?

By  the  way  when  will  my  first  water  change  have  to  be?  What  do  I  do  about  the  chemical  I  added  in  (which  Venket  advised  against)?

 Best  regards,
 Sirish.

You  can  get  Otocinclus,  which  is  a  better  option.  Cories  r  not  algae  eaters.
Get  some  Flying  fox  from  Southern  India  Aquarist  too..

 Hi  sirish,

Flying  fox  are  doing  a  good  job  for  me.  You  can  also  try  to  hav  one  albino  shark  cos  that  fellow  is  also  of  lil  help  when  it  comes  to  algae.  Please  do  not  add  any  snail  killers  or  algae  destroyers  to  get  rid  of  them  cos  this  is  ultimately  affect  the  plants.  If  you  hav  already  added,  I  suggest  you  make  a  huge  water  change  every  2  days  for  the  next  one  week  ahead.  Since  you  are  at  Chennai,  HUGE  might  be  a  real  harsh  word  when  it  comes  to  water  so  you  can  do  a  50%  water  change  for  the  next  week  ahead.

 Regards

 Venket

I  noticed    increased  algae  growth  in  my  3  ft.  planted  tank  recently.  I  stopped  all  dosing  and  also  reduced  feeding.  I  also  decided  to  do  a  water  change,  that's  when  i  found  out  the  culprit.  One  of  the  swordtails  a  large  3  inch  one  (  I  never  used  to  see  him  much,  he  was  very  shy  and  always  hides  among  the  dense    wisteria  plants)  had  died  and  his  half  decomposed  body  was  found  behind  the  filter  intake.  Dead  fish  if  left  unremoved  from  the  planted  tank  can  upset  the  balance  and  significantly  increase  the  PO4  levels.  Check  to  see  if  all  your  fishes  are  alive  and  kicking.

How  is  KONTAK  for  removing  Algae?  Is  it  good  to  use  on  a  new  tank?

What  is  your  NO3  (Nitrate)  level  in  your  tank?  Do  you  have  any  NH4?
My  tap  water  contains  0.5  ppm  of  PO4  and  I  am  adding  KH2PO4  to  make  2ppm  of  PO4,  three  times  a  week.
