 Hi  all
I  decided  to  explore  various  options  here  for  culturing  live  feed  for  my  finicky  eaters.  My  Tubifex  culture  failed  miserably.  Stank  like  hell.

Then  I  tried  a  Fruitfly  trap.  Took  a  small  plastic  container,  squashed  some  rotten  bananas,  poked  a  few  holes  on  the  lid.  Presto!  flies  found  their  way  into  the  fermenting  muck,  laid  eggs  and  I  had  larvaes  within  three  days.

I  got  some  African  wrigglers  used  for  vermicomposting  (Idea  suggested  by  Romi).  They  unfortunately  turnedout  to  be  too  big.  Hope  to  culture  them  and  harvest  the  juveniles.

In  a  huge  barrel,  I  had  a  Tilapia  which  I  released  into  a  well  sometime  back.  Left  the  tub  alone  with  water.  Harvest  plenty  of  mosquito  larvae  and  occasional  Bloodworm.

I've  also  kept  eggshells,  used  green,  oolong  tea  leaves,  banana  peels  and  some  cow  dung  slurry  in  a  big  plastic  bag.  Houseflies  found  their  way  inside  and  I  got  maggots!

Gokul,  just  wanted  to  request  you  for  some  guidance  regarding  the  Fly-Trap  /  Breeding  Box.  I'm  planning  to  set  one  up  today  and  it  will  be  a  great  help  if  you  can  kindly  guide  me  regarding  the  below-

How  do  you  seperate  the  Fly-Larvae  from  the  Rotten  Banana  mess  ?  Pick  them  up  one  by  one  using  a  tweezer  or  something  similar  ?  How  do  you  clean  the  maggots  -  I  mean  can  they  be  cleaned  in  a  bowl  of  water  or  do  they  drown  /  die  immediately  ?

Kindly  guide  me  a  little  here...

Put  the  container  in  the  freezer  for  a  couple  of  minutes.  Shake  out  the  flies.  they  will  be  immobile  for  some  time.

I've  used  an  inverted  bottle  trap  for  fruitfly  -  works  great  in  fruitfly  season  if  you  place  it  near  your  fruit  tray  :)

Edit:  The  above  is  for  fruit  fly  harvesting  -  maggots  I  guess  you  have  to  pick  it  up  manually.

 Regards,
 Venkat

 Thanks  all
 Niranjan,
my  cultures  are  outdoor.  We  have  lots  of  space  outside.  The  housefly  maggots  were  from  the  plastic  bag  full  of  rubbidsh,  of  used  green/oolong  tea  leaves,  vegetable  matter  and  cowdung  slurry.  The  fruitfly  maggots  are  in  isolated  containers.  Holes  are  wide  enough  for  only  them  to  get  inside.

 Kush,
When  the  fly  trap  container  is  opened  under  some  sunlight,  the  larvae  crawl  up.  You  can  easily  scoop  them  up  with  a  plastic  visiting  card  or  something.

 Jeyanth,  Saurabh,
I  will  keep  updating.  There  are  others  still  more  into  culturing  than  me.  I  sincerely  hope  they  will  post  their  experience.

 GatorX,
There  must  be  many  vermiculture  units  around  Mumbai.  You  may  get  more  varieties  there.  I'll  send,  if  you  don't  find  any.

Biggest  threat  to  my  cultures  are  ANTS!  I've  used  preventive  measures  though.

PS:  Venkat,  your  fruitfly  trap  was  the  inspiration  along  with  some  ideas  from  Rahul.  The  fish  are  interested  in  maggots  only.
