Thought  I'd  add  in  a  note  on  Metering.

Metering  allows  you  to  dictate  what  do  you  want  the  camera  to  determine  the  "whites"   on.

 Example  -
 A)  White  subject  in  a  dark/lesser  area

Spot  -  will  cause  the  whole  background  to  go  black,  since  the  metering  was  on  the  "white"  object.  The  whites  will  be  perfectly  balanced.
Generally  averages  at  2-3%  of  the  center  "brightness"
Note  the  white  flowers  and  dark  bg  here
 http://www.flickr.com/photos/hayath/873741677/

Center  -  will  cause  the  shot  to  be  metered  more  on  the  center  area.   Background  will  have  some  details.  Whites  might  be  blown  out
 Average  of  the  center's  brightness
 http://www.flickr.com/photos/hayath/3340351678/
 http://www.flickr.com/photos/hayath/510379492/

Evaluative  -  camera  tries  to  expose  "All"  parts  of  the  photograph.  The  variance  in  tonalities  will  cause,  either
 1.  The  whites  to  be  blown  out  (due  to  the  lesser  lit  background)
 2.  The  overall  image  to  go  dark  (due  to  the  white  subect)

 http://www.flickr.com/photos/hayath/2431146607/

 B)  Darker  subject  than  the  surrounding

Spot  -  will  cause  the  whole  background  to  go  white/overexpose,  since  the  metering  was  on  the  "darker"  object.
 http://www.flickr.com/photos/hayath/1431679988/

 Center  and  Evaluative  as  above.

Classic  case  with  birds  where  evaluative  will  mostly  give  you  silhouettes  instead  of  details  on  the  bird
 http://www.flickr.com/photos/hayath/517325829/

Corrected  by  spot  metering  on  the  bird
 http://www.flickr.com/photos/hayath/517607289/

Also  metering  is  used  creatively  to  create  silhouettes  as  needed.  The  spot  metering  was  on  the  sky  here,  making  the  camel  and  the  handler  a  silhouette
 http://www.flickr.com/photos/hayath/3263614985/

Or  use  it  the  opposite  manner  to  overxpose  the  background  -

 Cheers,
