Hi,
My aquarium gravel is catching algae very fast and my tank base totally looking green/brown.
How can i clean this algae? At water changes it cannot be removed by syphon
Walls are not catching algae.
This is a 2ft NON PLANTED tank with just a pair of Angel.Internal Power Filter running 24*7 and weekly WC of 50-70%.
Is there any relation of increasing temprature and increasing algae..?
thank you |

Whats the capacity of the filter? I think you would need to increase or optimize the water flow so that there is more movement around the substrates vicinity too. Let the experts confirm. |

There are two things that you should check now...
How much are you feeding it and what is the lighting in your tank. This might resolve the problem.
Let us know on these two things and also on your filteration... what is your Liters / Hour output capacity of your filter, you can check this by filling a two liter water bottle and noting how much time this requires and extrapolate it for the hour. |

@ Shreyas..
Currently i am feeding them twice a day.(they finish in 2-3 mins) Hikari Pellet Food.
And one 8watt CFL running for 7-8 hrs per day..(means in night)
And filter is some BOYU brand and is written 600 LPH on it.
Thank You |

You mean to say that you run a light in the night? When do the fish get a break from light? |

Vignesh,
No one stays at home whole day. Its pretty dark in the room where Tank is kept.
and then how one can see the fish in dark if no lights are on? |

Sanjiv, as of now, dont switch the lights on at night. On weekends when you are at home, you can keep it on for... lets say 6 hours. Do this for a few days. Feeding looks okay. If this fails then we might have to look at water quality. Do a 50% water change over the week end. Hope you dont have excessive nutrients in the water, encouraging algae. |

A non-planted tank does not require lighting unless you want to see the fish. Since you are using lights in a non-planted tank, you have algae which is taking place of your plants. Use the lights only when you want to see the fish, make a couple of water changes and the algae will disappear. |

I have a similar problem
The tank is 3.5' X 2' x 2' ( atman tank with the filter running 24X7)
I have 1 flowerhorn in it.( big one about 6-7 inches)
i never switch on the light in the tank and feed it once a day which it seems to eat in about 5 min.
but it is placed in my office cabin and the cabin is lit up thru out the day.
What can i do
there is algae on the gravel and the walls .
the alternate days 20% water change doesnt seem to help to solve this problem and they come up within 2 days of water change.( complete change)
please advice

For the walls, if it is a glass tank, you can use a magnetic cleaner. If it is in the gravel, I think you need to improve circulation in the tank. Since it is a top filter, I guess circulation might not be enough. You can try adding a powerhead. |

@Vikas - you should use a UV filter. It will surely kill all the algae spores. |
