 Hi  Fish  lovers,

Before  I  introduce  myself,  let  me  take  a  little  of  your  time  in  telling  you  how  it  all  started  with  me.

It  all  started  with  the  concentration  camp!  One  fine  day  I  found  that  a  marine  aquarium  was  set  up  and  running  with  all  the  fishes,  anemones,  stars  and  live  rocks  in  it  (~5ft  x  2ft  x  3ft).  It  happened  to  be  at  a  place  (sorry,  can't  disclose  where),  which  I  had  to  cross  every  morning.  First  2  days  it  looked  fantastic.  And  then  started  the  inevitable.  Every  other  day  a  beautiful  fish  paid  with  her  life.  Wonderful  puffers,  clowns,  butterflies,  etc.  etc.  all  had  to  go  one  after  the  other.  The  aquarium  maintenance  was  on  contract  and  the  sellers  were  making  good  money  by  introducing  more  and  more  fishes  to  the  concentration  camp.  It  became  unbearable  after  few  deaths  and  being  a  total  novice  in  Fish  keeping,  I  started  looking  for  answers  from  all  the  ‘forum’s  and  websites  dedicated  to  aquarists.  After  I  gathered  enough  information  with  me,  I  talked  to  the  keepers  of  the  aquarium  and  made  it  a  point  that  they  do  enough  to  set  it  back  to  shape.  They  changed  the  contractor  and  the  new  maintenance  guys  started  checking  on  the  water  quality  and  slowly  managed  to  somewhat  restore  the  setup.  It  took  more  than  7-8  months  to  see  a  couple  of  fishes  surviving  and  doing  ok.  Also  the  algae  formation  came  down  quite  a  bit.  Now  its  been  a  year  and  a  half  and  the  aquarium  is  in  decent  shape.  Now  there  are  about  8  fishes  and  3  anemones  and  a  couple  of  starfishes  in  the  aquarium  and  all  seem  to  be  doing  fine.

This  fiasco  got  the  interest  in  me  and  I  started  thinking  of  setting  up  a  small  aquarium  at  home,  a  fresh-water  one  to  begin  with.  My  son  Deep  was  nearing  his  second  birthday  and  we  thought  of  getting  a  small  aquarium.

We  got  home  a  18in  x  9in  x  12in  tank  from  LFS  and  started  with  a  couple  of  pairs  of  Mollies  and  a  Sucker.  Well  I  did  not  check  on  the  water  much  but  kept  changing  20%  of  it  each  day  for  the  whole  month.  I  got  a  few  strips  of  pH  papers  from  my  lab  and  checked  the  water  once  a  while.  The  aquarium  went  on  doing  well  and  still  is  doing  fine  (though  with  other  fishes  now).

In-between,  a  friend  gave  me  his  aquarium  and  a  lot  of  fishes  before  he  left  Bangalore!  This  tank  is  24in  x  12in  x  12in.  There  were  3  pairs  of  Cichlids,  a  pair  of  Silver  Dollars,  a  pair  of  Albino  Skirt  Tetras,  a  Tiger  barb,  a  Loach,  a  Sucker.  and  a  few  plants  and  a  driftwood.  I  had  a  tough  time  fixing  this  new  aquarium  but  all  seem  to  be  ok  now.  A  Silver  Dollar  died  of  fungal  infection  that  she  came  with  and  the  Cichlids  killed  the  2  Tetras.  Now  there  are  a  pair  of  mid  sized  Blue  Cichlids,  a  pair  of  small  Yellow  Cichlids,  a  pair  of  Melanochromis  auratus,  a  Sucker,  a  Tiger  barb  a  Loach  and  also  one  Silver  Dollar  that  I  managed  to  save  from  fungal  infection.

I  gave  my  Mollies  and  fries  (after  a  round  of  spawning)  and  a  Sucker  to  the  LFS  and  got  5  pairs  of  Neon  Tetras  and  a  pair  of  Glow  Lights  (free  with  the  Neons!)  for  the  small  aquarium.  Both  the  tanks  are  doing  ok  now,  though  a  bit  overloaded  and  with  the  plants.  I  bought  a  piece  of  driftwood  with  Java  moss  and  planted  it  in  the  small  aquarium  with  a  couple  of  other  plants.  I  also  installed  a  waterfall  type  filter  for  the  small  tank  with  Neons.  The  bigger  tank  has  a  normal  sponge  filter  and  a  air  pump  as  there  are  too  many  fishes.  Both  the  tanks  are  fairly  planted,  and  interestingly  enough  the  Cichlids  are  going  well  with  the  plants.

Once  the  Cichlids  grow  a  bit  more  probably  I  need  to  give  them  off,  as  it  may  not  be  good  for  them  in  their  present  home.  Also  the  Silver  Dollar  has  grown  fairly  big.  So  I  need  to  do  something  about  her  too.

So  that's  my  little  Aqua  world.  About  a  year  into  this  and  am  feeling  great  and  growing   Smile  .  Apart  from  this,  professionally  I  am  Intellectual  Property  Analyst.  Hail  from  Kolkata  (Bong  as  you  may  call)  and  came  to  Bangalore  about  a  decade  ago  for  my  PhD  at  IISc.  and  now,  am  working  with  a  MNC  at  Whitefield.  I  had  been  a  biology  student  all  through.  So  my  inclination  towards  plants  and  animals  are  kind  of  inbred!  Well  I  also  do  take  a  bit  of  interest  in  any  form  on  technology.  Be  it  computers,  gadgets,  rockets,  slingshot  purifier,  household  electronics,  name  it  I  would  like  to  know  more  Smile.  I  am  also  there  in  Mouthshut  with  the  ID  indrajit_pande  and  reviewed  on  a  few  things  if  you  care.  Have  lots  of  friends  and  going  to  add  more  here  at  IAH.  So  my  best  of  regards  to  you  all  and  I  know  I  will  have  a  great  experience  here  and  will  get  lot  of  suggestions  for  my  tanks.  I  plan  to  build  a  standard  size  aquarium  myself  some  day.  But  for  this  time,  I  have  lots  to  think  about  for  my  2  little  aquaria.

 Regards

 Indrajit

This  is  Souvik  Ray  from  kolkata.  i  am  a  college  student.

my  fish  keeping  started  at  the  age  of  5/6  years  when  my  dad  bought  me  a  bowl  and  a  betta...since  then  i  am  in  love  with  fishes...after  that  i  got  a  small  1.5  feet  aquarium  and  it  continued  till  i  was  4th  standard  and  we  moved  to  another  house  where  my  dad  bought  me  a  2  feet  tank  and  made  me  a  3  feet  outdoor  cement  tank  where  i  used  to  keep  gold  fishes,  molllies,  guppys,  goramies  and  all  other  regular  available  fishes.  there  is  a  gap  in  this  hobby  during  my  10th  to  12th  standard....and  my  mom  made  the  2  feet  tank  as  a  showcase   Chuckle

again  after  joining  the  college  i  recovered  the  tank  from  mom  and  started  the  hobby  again  but  this  time  i  can  call  it  practical  fish  keeping...i  studied  in  net  on  various  topics  and  articals  abut  aquarium  and  fishes,  fish  profiles,  compatibility  and  plants.  i  met  various  people  who  are  in  this  hobby  for  years,  through  net.  i  talked  to  them  and  tried  to  gather  some  knowledge.  after  that  i  tried  my  hand  with  Malawi  and  after  that  i  entered  into  planted  tank.  now  i  have  a  1.5  feet  and  1  cubic  feet  planted  tank.  1  feet  hospital  tank,  2  feet  plant  stocking  tank,  outdoor  cement  tank  for  growing  plants  and  cherry  shrimp  breeding  and  a  new  20  gallon  marine  tank  with  2  yellow  tail  blue  damsels.  one  40  liter  bucket  for  native  rainbow  and  green  shrimps.

i  found  this  forum  very  resourceful  so  i  joined  this  forum   Smile

 Hi!

I'm  a  web  designer  working  with  HP  in  Chennai.  I  have  been  in  this  hobby  for  the  past  one  year.  I  have  a  small  2x1x1  planted  tank  with  four  gold  fishes:  Shenbagam,  Meme,  Bubbles  and  Shorty.  I  also  have  a  micro  tank:  18"x7"x10".  This  is  also  a  planted  tank  with  three  small  black  mollies  in  it  for  the  time  being.  I  want  to  keep  a  pair  of  dwarf  puffers  in  this  tank,  any  help  sourcing  them  will  be  greatly  appreciated.

 Pics  are  here:

 http://picasaweb.google.com/lh/photo/_k0Ttk2kP_vD44QSgjj5ag?feat=directlink

I  have  been  experimenting  with  gluteraldehyde  for  the  past  two  weeks.  I  noticed  that  the  snails  in  my  micro  tank  move  very  fast  as  their  shells  have  become  thin  and  transparent!  I  guess  a  little  higher  dosage  would  eliminate  them,  but  my  riccia,  grass  and  a  few  other  delicate  plants  didn't  react  too  well  to  it.  So  am  now  adding  only  very  small  doses  to  clear  the  algae  and  generate  CO2.

 Hi,
 I  am  Ratheesh  From  Kerala.
I  am  a  software  engineer  by  profession.I  have  keeping  Aquariums  for  since  1992.  I  am  interested  in  Cichlid  variety  especially  OSCARS.   i  am  also  interested  in  Tetra  varieties.  Now  a  days  i  am  crazy  anout  Discus  fish  because  i  heard  from  several  Aqua  hobbist  that  keeping  the  discus  is  very  challenging  .  So  I  took  this  as  a   challenge  to  keep  the  discus  in  my  Aquarium.  I  bought  one  pair  of  Discus  on  this  june  15  th.

The  problem  i  am  really  facing  is  that  i  cant  get  different  variety  of  discus  from  kerala(especially  from  Kollam  and  Trivandrum  district.  i  forgot  to  tell  you  that  i  am  a  native  of  Kollam  district  and  working  in  Trivandrum).  I  have  an  elder  brother  who  is  also  very  interested  in  keeping  the  aquarium.
So  i  am  here  with  you  for  studing  your  experience  .

I  have  posted  a  forum  please  read  this  link  Its  about  the  discus  fish

 Hello,

My  name  is  Mohamed  (Moe),  an  Enterprise  Strategy  Consultant  recently  relocated  to  Chennai  after  15  long  years  in  Canada,  its  good  to  be  home!  Aquarium  keeping  has  been  my  hobby  since  childhood  and  when  I  moved  to  Canada  graduated  to  keeping  Marine  Aquariums.  Got  so  much  into  it  that  I  built  a  3  sided  125  gallon  into  the  wall  of  my  first  home  in  Canada.

Recently,  I  have  been  smitten  by  planted  tanks/aquascaping  (Actually  thats  how  I  ended  up  on  this  forum  after  a  google  search).  This  place  has  a  wealth  of  knowledge  and  a  lot  of  helpful  people/professionals/specialists.  I  am  looking  foward  to  learning  the  intricacies  of  creating  and  keeping  a  planted  aquarium  from  scratch.  There  is  going  to  be  a  lot  of  reading  on  this  forum  for  me  to  do  and  would  appreciate  any  pointers  to  some  good  threads  on  this.

I  have  this  bad  habit  of  going  big,  so  I  have  an  empty  4'x2.5'x2'  (Approx  600l)  tank  currently  being  tested  for  leaks  and  I  am  hoping  to  start  a  planted  aquarium.  I  have  already  gone  to  some  posts  including  Harshal's  and  a  few  other  and  it  only  makes  me  want  to  create  a  planted  aquarium  all  the  more.

Hope,  I  don't  get  divorced  in  the  process...  Unsure

Anyways,  I  am  happy  to  be  here,  wish  me  luck,  join  me  on  this  journey  and  advice  is  always  welcome.

 Cheers,
 Moe.

 Hi,

My  name  is  Ashok.  I  registered  over  a  year  ago  but  I  have  not  been  active.  Anyway,  better  late  than  never.  I  am  a  Doctor  in  Chennai.  My  main  interest  is  in  Reef  Aquariums.  I  used  to  work  in  the  Uk  and  I  have  just  moved  to  Chennai  about  7  months  ago  and  have  set  up  an  Aquarium  which  is  running  for  the  last  4  months.  It's  good  to  know  that  the  hobby  is  doing  well  in  India  and  I  am  impressed  with  the  number  of  members  on  this  site.
