 Hi,

I'm  searching  for  tankmates  for  my  12  Puntius  fasciatus.
Now  they  are  in  a  100x30x40  cm  tank,  but  in  a  few  weeks  they  will  be  placed  in  a  140x40x40  cm  tank.

 P.  fasciatus

In  another  tank  I  have  2  Pseudosphromenus  cupanus.  (Probably  2  males)

Would  it  be  a  good  decision  to  place  the  two  species  in  one  tank  and  do  you  have  other/more  suggestions  for  tankmates?

 Maybe  Botia  striata?

narayanii  could  be  a  good  addition  or  any  other  Puntius  that  doesn't  grow  past  3".

I  have  mine  with  Giant  Danios,  Puntius  filamentosus  and  Rasbora  daniconius,  a  few  juvenile  E.  maculatus  and  some  A.  lineatus  and  A.  blockii.

The  killies  don't  make  good  companions  as  they  tend  to  jump  when  other  fishes  get  too  close.

Any  smaller  fish  may  get  hunted  down  if  your  barbs  are  bigger.

Mine  went  well  with  Badis  badis,  P.bimaculatus,  L.Thermalis.
I  presume  they  are  decent  enough  tank  mates.  :)

 Thankyou.

 hi

they  do  well  with  any  fish  their  size.  I  would  not  reccomend  them  with  any  shrimps  or  smaller  fish  like  P  Gelius  etc.,  since  they  may  get  harrassed/eaten

 Thanks  for  the  replies.

My  P.  fasciatus  are  now  in  a  tank  together  with  Badis  badis  and  Aplocheilus  panchax.
 P.  fasciatus  is  a  fast  swimmer  so  the  tankmates  getting  a  little  nervous.
So  I  will  give  P.  fasciatus  more  space  and  B.badis  and  A.  panchax  a  bit  more  rest.

Mainly  I'm  searching  for  a  bottomdweller  and  perhaps  one  that  swims  in  the  higher  regions  of  the  tank.

Etroplus  maculatus  would  be  a  interesting  option,  but  will  they  do  well  in  freshwater  (pH  around  7)?

P.fasciatus  are  fast  feeders  and  extremely  boisterous.  I  have  seen  them  feed  on  all  three  levels  of  the  tank:  Surface,  middle  and  bottom. They  will  out  compete  your  Badia  badis  and  starve  them.

In  the  wild  we  have  seen  them  with
 P.filamentosa  complex,  P.narayanii,  P.  bimaculatus,  P.sahyadrensis,
 A.panchax,  A.lineatus,A.blockii,
 E.canarensis,E.suratensis,E.maculatus,
 P.marginata,
 N.triangularis,L.thermalis,
 Salmostoma  boopis,R.daniconius
 to  name  a  few.

Yes,  E.maculatus  will  be  happy  in  fresh  water.

 Hope  this  helps

 Regards,
 Nayak.

This  is  very  true.  That's  why  I  going  to  seperate  them.
In  the  meantime  I  watch  carefully  if  the  badids  get  enough  food.

(Meso)noemacheilus  triangularis  would  be  an  option.  I've  seen  them  in  our  local  fish  store  yesterday.
Etroplus  maculatus  is  hard  to  find  in  our  country.  I've  seen  them  only  once  in  the  last  couple  of  years.
I  will  search  for  them  but  I'm  in  no  hurry.

Even  thought  not  the  most  aggressive  of  all  cichlids,  maculatus  will  be  a  pain  to  handle  for  the  barbs  when  they  think  about  breeding  and  once  you  have  a  male  and  a  female,  they  will  not  take  much  time  to  start  laying  and  you  know  what  cichlids  do  after  that.   Badis  can't  and  wont  stand  a  chance  against  these  Puntius.   triangularis  is  a  fantastic  option.   Will  compete  for  food  and  pretty  hardy  though.   Other  options  would  be  termalis  and  if  available  you  can  try  Schisturas  like  denisonii  or  bevani

 Good  post,  Nayak.
 Agree  with  the  above.
I  am  sure  Kasjal12  wanted  to  know  the  fish  that  the  P.Fasciatus  lives  with  in  their  natural  biotopes.  Not  the  tank  mates  you  force  it  to  live  with.  Smile

I've  heard  M.  triangularis  can  be  a  bit  territorial.
How  many  of  them  would  be  suitable  for  a  140x40x40  cm  tank?

And  what  about  Pseudosphromenus  cupanus..   is  it  an  option  together  with  P.  fasciatus  if  I  create  enough  places  where  the  current  isn't  too  strong  and  where  they  can  retreat  into  the  aquatic  vegetation  or  coconutshells  when  they  want  to?

I  think  I  abandon  the  idea  of  placing  E.  maculatus  in  this  tank.

Last  question  of  this  day   Smile  (it's  still  May  19th  over  here)
Has  anybody  ever  seen  a  P.  fasciatus  over  8cm  (3")?

Even  though  they  compete  for  food,  i  haven't  seen  them  territorial.   You  can  have  around  or  even  more  than  half  a  dozen  in  a  tank  that  size.

cupanus  ain't  a  shy  fish.   It  can  compete  with  the  barbs  for  food  and  seldom  shys  away  under  cover.

I  have  two  females  which  are  slightly  over  3"  and  we  did  get  to  see  plenty  of  large  ones  in  Vaalpaarai  where  we  caught  them.

In  the  wild  near  Madhu's  leg.

But  the  biggest  I  have  seen  in  captivity  is  with  Trevor.
