PostPosted: Tue May 26, 2009 5:40 pm Post subject: My New Discus Tank Reply with quote

Finally  I  took  the  plunge....  I  couldn't  resist  it  anymore...  Had  some  free  time  at  hand  and  started  planning  a  new  4  feeter.  I  was  not  decided  if  it  is  going  to  be  fresh  or  marine...  Finally  decided  to  go  freshwater  with  discuss..
Unfortunately  my  chairman(  AKA  wife)  didn't  like  the  looks  of  a  bare  tank  with  a  few  fish.  She  wanted  a  planted  tank  with  discus  !!!!  but  Iam  not  ready  for  it  yet.  So  did  a  balancing  act  and  ended  up  with  a  bare  bottom  with  semi  planted  tank  !!!

The  plants  are  in  a  3'x3"x4"  small  glass  tank  filled  with  latrate  and  gravel  and  planted  and  then  placed  at  the  back  of  the  tank.  The  remaining  front  portion  is  bare  and  easy  to  clean.

Will  post  some  photos  after  I  get  home....

 Ilango  ,

Good  to  see  discus  kept  in  semiplanted  tank  .  Those  who  don't  like  to  go  with  barebottom  tank  for  discus  ,  they  can  choose  such  setting  .  easy  to  maintain  and  looks  nice  also  .

I  can  see  that  this  tank  background  is  very  dark  ,  due  to  which  your  red  Discus   may  show  more  peppering  ,  but  overall  I  like  the  tank   setting  .

Ilango  your  setup  is  looking  beautiful.
You  can  also  have  a  look  on  this  thread.
Its  also  a  semi  planted  tank  and  small  glass  boxes  are  used  to  plant  plants  in  front  and  on  the  background  driftwood  is  used.

 Shiva,

Thanks  for  your  comments.  I  had  this  background  in  hand  and  used  it  and  I  don't  mind  changing  the  background,  what  type/color  do  you  suggest??

Ilango  that's  a  bare  bottom  tank,  i  have  seen  it  personally.
The  plants  are  like  potted  in  glass  boxes  ,  if  you  see  carefully  in  the  third  image  you  would  able  to  figure  it  out.
And  also  the  left  section  had  no  plants  so  that  it  can  be  used  as  a  feeding  area  and  would  siphon  out  the  uneaten  food.

You  are  right  aravind,  I  can  see  a  small  area  in  the  left  which  is  bare.  That  is  what  I  wanted  to  do  in  the  begining...  all  three  areas  (back, left  and  right)  to  be  planted  and  the  front  to  be  bare  bottom.  Decided  against  it  as  this  is  the  first  time  Iam  getting  into  discus.  The  link  proves  that  it  is  possible  Smile
