I  hav  an  african  cichlid  setup  with  venustus,  blue  dolphin,  yellow  lab  and  peacocks.  My  tank  size  90G.  Now  i  wish  to  add  a  jewel  cichlid  to  the  setup.  All  of  them  will  be  there  for  a  year  then  they  will  be  moved  to  6ft  tank.  Suggestions  please..

jewel  cichlids  are  african  riverine  cichlids  and  don't  grow  larger  than  5-5.5",  don't  require  a  higher  PH  like  the  african  cichlids  from  the  volcanic  lakes  .  quite  aggressive  when  breeding,  will  take  on  much  bigger  cichlids,  and  very  territorial.

where  as  the  yellow  lab,  and  the  cytochara  moorii  are  malawians(africans),  which  require  a  higher  PH,  which  get  to  5"  and  6"+  respectively.  quite  aggressive  and  quite  territorial  but  not  as  much  as  the  jewels.

the  venustus  is  a  malawian(african)  which  again  requires  a  higher  PH  and  grows  to  11"  or  so.  very  aggressive  and  when  its  big  enough  this  cichlid  becomes  quite  aggressive.

the  parrot  is  a  hybrid,  about  which  i  really  don't  know  much  other  than  that,  a  vieja  is  also  used  to  get  this  cichlid.  this  one  though  is  aggressive,  has  a  deformed  mouth,  and  a  wierd  body  shape  which  kind  of  removes  the  edge  of  its  aggression.

now  with  the  above  given  info,  i  think  you  should  be  able  to  figure  what  you  can  keep,  your  self,  i  guess.Smile

You  are  mixing  up  african  with  Malawi..  Thats  not  good  choice.  for  the  same  reason  i  returned  My  Jewel  as  they  are  littlebit  aggressive  and  making  life  miserable  for  other  malawi.

but  riverine  and  volcanic  lake  cichlids  require  quite  different  parameters  ;)

but  the  jewels  being  quite  resilient  about  their  parameters  can  be  kept  in  quite  a  lot  of  different  environments.  thus  have  invaded  quite  a  lot  of  water  systems  in  different  parts  of  the  world.

i  have  kept  jewel  with  yellow  labs  and  dolphins.  twice  i  had  kept  and  twce  i've  had  different  experience.  the  first  time  i  kept   jewel  i  had  to  return  it  within  a  week.  he  was  an  absolute  terror.  whereas  the  other  time  the  jewel  which  i  got  was  very  good,  never  bothered  anyone  unless......apart  from  it  he  had  a  territory  where  he  used  to  rest(small  territory).  but  again  he  didn't  think  twice  to  hit  the  other  fish  if  they  came  near  to  his  area.  overall  suggestion,  don't  keep  it.

Jewel  is  terror  for  other  fishes.  It  is  not  a  good  idea  to  mix  with  venustus,  blue  dolphin,  yellow  lab  and  peacocks.
