 Hi,

I'm  Gautam.  I'm  based  out  of  Hyderabad.  I  am  new  to  the  hobby  and  my  knowledge  about  aquariums  and  fish  is  relatively  low.  I  have  a  150  ltr  tank  with:

 -  2  Fantailed  goldfish
 -  2  ID  Sharks
 -  1  Bala  Shark
 -  1  rainbow  shark

I  wish  to  know  more  details  about  the  kind  of  filter  I  need  to  use  in  my  tank.  I  also  want  to  find  out  if  I  can  put  any  more  fish  in  my  tank  and  if  so  what  will  be  best  suited.  I  would  also  like  to  put  some  plants  so  any  suggestions  are  welcome..

 Thanks

If  your  ID  Sharks  look  anything  like  this  :  http://s3.frontur.com/img/15002/20071210130035_0.jpg

I  suggest  you  return  to  the  LFS  cos  they  are  a  species  fit  only  for  ponds.  Check  out  fish  profiles  before  you  buy  'em.  Really  helps.

 Hi  Gautham

Sharks  and  gold  fishes  are  not  compatible.  Would  recommend  that  you  go  in  for  one  of  them.  Also  its  best  to  let  tank  stabilise  before  adding  any  fish

Do  you  research  on  fish  and  the  bio  load  it  might  generate  when  they  grow  ,  else  you  wil  starting  your  tank  small.

Its  better  you  go  in  for  a  good  filter  like  Ehiem  2213  ,  it  lasts  long  and  the  investment  is  worth  it  ,  when  you  have  fishes  that  are  big  like  gold  fish  and  shark  ,  you  cannot  escape  frequent  and  large  water  changes  and  thats  as  important  as  having  a  good  filter  .

You  will  not  find  many  advocates  of  plastic  plants  on  IAH  ,  me  included  (  no  offense  meant  ).  Buit  its  your  choice

All  the  best  for  your  hobby..  I  am  sure  there  is  a  lots  of  learning  on  the  way  ..  have  an  open  mind  and  you  will  enjoy  this  fulfilling  hobby  .

To  keep  your  plants  alive  is  more  difficult  than  keeping  fish  alive.
Before  you  get  yourself  plants,  read  through  the  forums,  to  get  a  basic  idea  of  what  you  are  getting  into.
Then  we  can  get  to  helping  you  sort  out  what  would  best  suit  you  in  terms  of  your  budget  etc.,

 Gautham

Sorry  about  the  plastic  ,  may  be  i  need  glasses

Ok  Gold  fish  with  plants  is  very  difficult  trhey  are  likely  to  destory  all  plants

You  need  to  really  take  a  call  ,  in  case  you  want  to  go  planted  then  its  a  whole  new  game  ,  with  filters  ,  substrates  ,  fishes  ,  lights  etc

Dont  think  you  can  currently  mix  the  two.

If  you  want  to  gold  fish  ,  then  tank  ,  filters  etc  are  all  different

Read  the  forum  and  make  your  choice

 Gautam

Would  recommend  you  go  through  the  section  in  the  below  link  under  Aquatic  Plants  extensively,  You  will  pretty  much  get  all  the  info  you  need.

With  planted  tanks  pretty  much  everything  depends  on  your  budget

60  lts  is  not  sufficient  for  goldies.
Make  this  60  ltr.  one  a  planted  tank.
It  would  be  easier  to  maintain  plus  less  expenses  on  lighting  /  substrate  /  CO2  etc.

 Hi,

60  Ltrs  wont  be  enough  for  2  goldfish?  I  thought  that  for  8-10  gallons  per  goldfish  was  the  norm  and  60  ltrs  is  about  16  gallons  making  it  just  about  enough..  Plus  if  I  put  in  a  good  filter  and  do  regular  water  changes  would  it  not  be  good  enough?  Pls  advise..  According  to  my  LFS  I  can  have  up  to  8-10  goldfish  in  my  60  ltr  tank  itself..  Of  course  I  know  he  is  just  trying  to  make  a  quick  buck...

Golds  lack  stomach  like  other  ciprinids,  therefore  producing  a  lot  of  waste  and  not  able  to  digest  protein  properly.
Therefore  each  goldfish  requires  minimum  20  gallons  of  water.  Golds  are  not  supposed  to  be  kept  in  an  aquarium,  these  are  pond  fish.
The  LFS  themself  stock  their  tanks  with  a  lot  of  goldies,  and  suggest  the  same  to  their  clients.  Their  only  intention  being  selling  the  stock.
A  gold  being  a  sturdy  fish  would  not  die  even  in  a  bowl  if  areated  properly,  but  then  it  would  be  like  putting  a  person  in  a  6  x  6  x  8  room.
Just  imagine  yourself  in  its  place,  how  would  you  feel.  Our  intention  is  to  keep  our  pets  healthy  and  happy.

Sorry,  I'm  not  good  at  writing  and  might  sound  boring,  but  thats  the  shortest  way  I  could've  put  it.

 Hi  Gautam,

 Few  pointers  for  you.

You  can  not  keep  all  fish  in  a  planted  tank.  Some  of  them  will  either  eat  them  or  destroy  them
Size  of  the  fish,  in  your  case  ID  &  bala  shark  will  grow  to  8-9  inches  in  just  1  year.   Gold  fish  are  actually  pond  fish  and  will  loose  its  colour  if  you  keep  them  in  aquarium.

I  would  recommend  to  read  these  2  article  to  bigin  with

Common  mistakes  made  by  new  aquarist
 http://aquariumhomecare.com/modules/AMS/article.php?storyid=8

Secret  of  fresh  water  Aquatic  plants
 http://aquariumhomecare.com/modules/AMS/article.php?storyid=6

finally  try  to  read  as  much  as  you  can  either  on  this  forum  or  on  net  which  will  really  help.

 Good  Luck
 Deepak
