The  next  plan  is  to  visit  Mr.Thomas  s  place  (around  15  kms  from  Pondy)   and  then  hit  a  water  body  very  close  to  his  place  (Chunnambu  something)  plus  a  few  other  water  bodies  around  (brackish  too).

That's  Chunnambar  on  Cuddalore  road,  Balaji.  It  is  near  to  Jayaseelan's  farm  too.

Check  for  some  driftwood  on  the  boat  ride.  I  got  a  few  there  Thumb Up

So  Mystus  tengara  could  become  a  junior  synonym  of  M.vittatus  and  be  replaced  by  M.carcio  then???

 Nooooo.

 M.  carcio  is  a  distinct  species  in  its  own  right.

What  is  needed  are  specimens  of  M.  vittatus  from  the  type  locality,  to  compare  with  what  we  call  M.  vittatus  from  northern  India  and  with  M.  tengara,  which  is  also  a  distinct  species.

The  Catfish  Checklist  lists  Pimelodus  carcio  as  a  junior  synonym  of  the  M.vittatus.  Did  Hamilton  describe  it  as  the  Mystus  carcio  or  the  Pimelodus  carcio???????
