 Hello  everyone,

This  has  been  something  that  has  always  been  on  my  mind  and  lets  try  and  see  if  we  can  actually  have  one.

We  all  crave  for  rare  fish  or  not  so  easily  available  fish  which  can  be  found  sometimes  at  ridiculous  prices.  So  why  not  start  a  forum  for  Hobbyist  breeders  and  not  commercial  entities.  This  will  involve  any  hobbyist  breeding  any  sort  of  fish  be  it  mollies  or  even  rare  Tanganyikan's.  We  all  spend  a  bomb  on  our  hobby  by  breeding  the  fish  we  already  have  and  if  we  do  see  a  demand  for  those  fish  we  can  make  our  hobby  self  sustaining.

I  think  what  we  will  need  is  a  forum  where  every  member  has  a  section  or  can  create  one  and  then  he/she  adds  the  list  of  fish  they  have/keep  and  also  the  ones  they  are  breeding  or  growing  out  and  a  tentative  date  if  the  fry  are  not  available  right  now.  That  way  people  can  pre  book.  But  yes  this  should  only  be  used  as  a  platform  the  transaction  as  such  whether  fish/money  has  to  be  the  responsibility  of  the  two  parties  involved  in  the  exchange  of  goods.

Or  maybe  it  can  be  even  put  up  as  a  Sticky  if  the  moderators  think  a  new  forum  will  be  too  much  of  a  strain  on  the  site  or  pockets  after  all  it  is  run  by  some  of  our  members  personal  money  to  some/large  extent.

I  would  love  to  see  any  inputs  here.  This  forum/sticky  will  help  us  hobbyists  get  a  good  group  of  fish  that  a  lot  of  us  might  want.

 Regards

 Its  a  nice  concept.
"I  would  say  this  program  ¬†should  only  be  for  hobbyist  .Any  hobbyist  who  bred  fishes  would  be  least  concerned  about  money. So  why  not  make  this  as  a  points  system  .
I  mean  to  say  lets  create  a  panel  of  people  and  make  a  list  of  fish  with  points  assigned.
Eg.guppy  fries  for  1  point  .When  someone  gives  it  his  point  increases  by  1  and  when  someone  takes  it  his  1  point  is  reduced.
When  someone  have  a  fish  for  exchange  he  should  ¬†give  to  a  guy  with  higher  points."
This  weird  idea  just  came  in  my  mine  mind,  so  i  am  posting  it.

 Hi  Arvind,

I  understand  that  but  the  first  problem  i  see  is  the  same  we  had  with  the  user  reputation  system.  So  lets  just  keep  it  simple.  A  list  of  people  who  keep  it  updated  with  what  they  have  and  contact  details  and  where  do  they  ship  and  other  details  and  that's  it.

It  should  not  be  complicated  with  anything  else.  Just  a  simple  place  for  the  hobbyist  to  get  something  they  might  be  craving  for  a  long  time...

Also  as  far  as  the  money  bit  is  concerned  i  would  not  like  to  take  a  call  on  what  all  IAH  members  would  like  to  do.  If  someone  does  want  to  give  them  away  then  please  feel  free  to  but  then  maybe  someone  wants  to  get  some  basic  cash  so  that  what  he  spends  on  rearing  the  fry  can  be  realised  from  the  sale  or  maybe  to  buy  fish  food  and  the  works.  We  need  to  think  about  everyone  when  making  this  and  not  just  our  own  personal  preferences  that  way  it  will  encounter  lesser  problems  if  it  does  happen.

I  don't  have  a  good  feeling  about  this.
Because  every  commercial  breeder  will  say  he  is  a  Hobbyist.  And  who  are  you  to  deny  it.

This  is  all  pointeless.  And  IHI  will  get  a  bad  name.

If  you  have  Fry  there  is  allready  a  forum  for  you  to  Exchange.
 Just  put  it  up  there.
If  somebody  else  has  fry  you  like  send  them  a  PM.
Keep  the  name  of  the  Forum  and  the  club  out  of  it.

Nikhil  I  like  your  idea  very  much.  About  the  money  part,i  agree  with  you.  As  a  breeder,we  do  shell  out  a  lot  on  fish  food.  But  just  a  question  that  struck  me,how  different  will  this  section/forum  be  from  the  WTS-hobbyists  only?

Breeding  fish  does  not  entitle  one  to  a  claim  on  another's  fry.  How  ever  rare  a  fish  might  be.  Whether  it  be  based  on  money  or  points  or  what  ever  method  you  choose  to  justify.

Most  of  the  hobbyists  here  give  away  their  fish  to  others.  It  all  depends  upon  the  relationship  and  respect  you  develop  on  the  forum.

There  are  already  the  WTB  and  WTS/exchange  forums  that  can  be  used  to  trade  fish  or  give  them  away.

There  is  also  the  Breeding  and  fry  care  forum  for  use.

Once  money  gets  involved,  Its  not  a  hobby  any  more  it  gets  down  to  business  and  thats  when  things  turn  ugly.

Hi  Nikil,  Seperating  the  commercial  guys  from  the  hobbyist  who  sells  is  well  impossible.

We  had  commericial  shop  owners  who  claimed  they  were  also  hobbyists  and  participating  in  our  planted  tank  competitions  held  at  ASK  in  the  Cubbon  Park  Govt.  Aquarium  premises  during  Aquafest.

Each  guy  wiill  have  they  own  supporters  and  theneverything  went  for  a  six.

Chinoy  when  i  said  forum  i  also  said  it  could  be  just  a  sticky  thread  in  the  appropriate  forum.

Shubhankar  its  not  really  different  but  it  does  solve  someones  problems  to  a  certain  extent.  Its  like  just  a  simple  ready  list  from  which  you  can  see  which  fish  is  available  with  whom.

Preetam  i  didn't  understand  your  first  statement  i  don't  think  i  said  about  staking  claim  to  any  ones  fry.  I  am  fully  aware  of  what  happens  with  fry  and  i  am  also  aware  of  what  people  do  with  spare  fry  and  also  people  who  cannot  get  rid  of  their  fry.

As  far  as  money  spoiling  things  i  beg  to  disagree  i  think  its  immature  people  who  do  that.  As  a  hobbyist  and  breeder  i  think  i  am  ok  in  charging  a  token  amount  for  the  fish.  It  can  an  insignificant  amount  but  its  not  about  the  money  you  know.  Its  just  a  simple  list  for  people  to  display  their  wares  and  for  new  people  to  find  it  easier.  You  might  give  it  away  for  free  after  all  its  your  fish  you  can  do  what  you  want  with  it.

Trevor  are  you  seriously  telling  me  you  dont  know  who  is  commercial  and  who  is  not?   Surprised   I  am  surprised  to  say  the  least.  This  is  just  a  simple  sticky  thread  nothing  else  where  people  put  in  what  they  have  and  where  they  can  be  contacted  and  after  all  caveat  emptor  does  apply  to  every  situation.  All  this  thread/forum  will  do  is  let  people  know  who  has  what  it  does  not  tell  what  price  or  anything  like  that.  Its  a  platform  for  us  hobbyists  to  make  life  a  lot  simpler  by  just  browsing  through  the  thread  to  see  if  any  fish  on  our  wish  list  is  there  or  not.

Nikhil.  The  question  is  not  whether  I  know  if  the  dude  is  commercial  or  not.

The  fact  remains  that  the  so  called  hobbyist  claims  the  title  when  we  all  know  he  is  commercial.

The  largest  sales  and  turnover  in  India  are  from  the  house  and  not  from  a  LFS.

 Hi  Nikhil,

 I  agree  with  you.

We  should  have  something  like  this  to  make  any  species  available  for  fellow  hobbyist.

This  way  one  will  not  give  into  the  temptation  of  buying  fish  at  ridicules  prices.  All  of  us  give  into  this  due  to  non/lack  availability  of  fish  and  this  could  be  a  platform  for  hobbyist  to  plan  ahead  and  take  an  opportunity  to  keep  fish  that  they  have  always  dreamt  about.

Chinoy  :  the  transaction  is  between  the  2  parties,  whether  it  is  a  give  away  or  transaction  which  involves  money.  So,  instead  of  whining  about  it  one  the  forum  matured  hobbyist  should  take  this  outside  the  forum.  IAH  is  anyways  not  responsible  for  any  transaction  one  makes  with  fellow  hobbyist  and  LFS,  but  I  still  see  people  cribbing  on  transaction  that  have  apparently  gone  bad.

 Regards,
 Surya

Thats  a  great  idea  Nikhil.  This  will  become  a  repository  for  breeding  info  and  will  also  help  hobbyist  to  sell/exchange  some  of  the  fries.

Ravi  as  an  after  thought  i  think  if  we  can  just  have  a  Sticky  on  this  subject.  I  mean  the  breeders  subject?  It  just  has  to  be  a  normal  thread  where  guys  who  breed  can  post  what  they  have  and  not  too  many  posts  per  person.  They  just  post  once  on  the  thread  and  keep  updating  the  same  post  over  and  over  again.

Do  you  think  that  will  be  possible?  Also  what  are  the  challenges/problems  you  think  we  might  face?  I  am  asking  this  since  you  have  been  managing  this  site  right  from  the  word  go.

 yeah  this  seems  niice.

just  one  sticky  where  each  member  can  post  one  thread  to  give  a  list  of  what  he  is  breeding  or  has  bred  quite  recently  not  just  the  regular  fish,  more  of  the  less  seen  fish  in  the  hobby.

and  keep  updating  his/her  post  to  put  forth  as  to  what  is  there,  so  that  other  hobbyists  waiting  for  this  fish  can  get  it  more  easily  than  the  effort  put  forth  by  the  keeper.
