Hi
i would like to setup a pond in my garden
i have had the garden dug up to setup the pond for about a 3.5ft diameter round one
i was planning on doing the following -- experts kindly advice
1. get a sintex tank that is 3.5ft in diameter and chop it up and place it inside the ground , i will be making the pond 18 inches depth only or max 20 inches , i will have 3 inches of the pond above the ground level
2. the concrete ponds are costing me 2k and reaons am holding back on them are cause they are bulky and might cause leaks
3. get a mason to build a round pond for me at home using one of the well rings ( the rings they put for wells)
i plan to put some plants in it , my huge pleco , soem gold fish and leave it alone , want it to develop into its own ecosystem , no lighting no filteration nothing pure natural ecosystem
await responses
thanks

Hi Ravi,
Try to make the pond at least 24" - 30" deep. Use two of the cement rings if you can. Goldfish need cooler waters, if you are not planning on filtration, aeration you will have a lot of trouble with heat and oxygen depletion.
Not many plants can survive the wrath of an overgrown pleco or ever hungry goldfish, I suggest you add a lilly and some amazons which can grow emersed.
Cement rings and concrete ponds will keep the water comparatively cooler than plastic tanks. |

the pit is already ready for the pond just need to get the container sourced or cement rings
@ suraj --- since the pond will be inside the ground even tho its sintex wont it be cooler since it will be inside ground
will try to figure out how much those well rings will cost me for the same
i can go for some aeration instead or filtration , have no electrical points in the garden for power source and dont want to do ugly DIYs for power,
the pond was mainly for the giant pleco which is my wives favourite fish and she doesnt want me to exchange it with any LFS ,
i might have some carps instead of gold fish in the pond
any more tips -- i plan to visit sintex on friday evening |

Hi Scralet,
i have built a pond in my garden the specs a little bigger, what i can suggest is there is a ring that is available that has a bottom too.. the ring they use for the well does'nt have a bottom. it becomes a problem later to do a cement job and all that.... or you can even get a pond done by your mason i dont think there will be any leak issues..
as for the aeration there has to be a sub-pump or you have to keep the pond really shallow. I would suggest you get a pump from the SP road should not cost more than 1K. I have been using one for almost 2 yrs now...PM me will give you some leads i used when i built my pond. |

Hi Ravi,
If you plan to have koi carp, then this will not be sufficient, they will need more surface area. If you have more space in the garden, a long rectangular pond with depths of upto 3' will be nice. Something in the range of 6x3x3 or 10x3x3 would be good for koi.
You can also think of pondliners and the entire pond can be a DIY project. |

i have another idea
get a cylindrical well ring with base
line it up with white cement and add blue tiles chips to give a blue look and just add some left over gravel and add fish , no plants , no aeration , no filter
will it work
will have it 2ft depth inside the ground
might have some big stones inside the pond for some fish to hids and feel safe |

Are you serious about adding fish to your pond.
And what will be your water change frequency.
Check this out if you haven't.

hi
if you can find it, the best thing u can use is pond liner. its like a thin rubber sheet.
look at this to get the idea - http://images.google.com/images?hl=en&q=pond+liner&gbv=2&aq=1&oq=pond+l&aqi=g10
or use the cement rings.
make sure that the pond is going to be in a very well shaded area. as the quantity of water is going to be very less, temperature can change very fast. or add lots of floating plants for cover.
YES. you absolutely need live plants if you are going to leave it alone.
having a shallow layer of substrate is better - u can use rooted plants. otherwise plant them in very small pots and keep them in the pond.
and NO to goldfish and pleco.
both produce a ton of waste- they probably poop more than they eat
so your water is going to get dirty very fast. and you MUST have an air pump for goldfish or they will swim at the surface all day.
the best low maintanence fish you can have in there which also look great from the top are MOLLIES (get some big 4-5 inch ones),platies, swordtails.
3.5' dia x 20" h (cylindrical) = roughly 200 gallons or 750 litres of water. you can add about 30 FISH EASILY
and add SNAILS (apple snails. not trumpet snails) they will do the cleaning. and add HAIR ALGAE which all those fish and snails will feed on, so will not grow out of control.
just refill the evaporated water and change about 50% water occasionally
SO SHADE + LOTS OF PLANTS + 30 MOLLIES, PLATIES, SWORDTAILS + 5 APPLE SNAILS + HAIR ALGAE = PERFECT
after that, you wont need to touch your pond again(not even feed regularly) |

Without filter and Goldfish!
You preparing a trench for them!
My filter failed for a day and I lost a 2 your old Koi and unfortunately I was travelling that day!
One good thing is that you building this down from the ground level and it is relatively easy to build a filter.
Get a Plastic Bucket with a plastic lid
Make a hole in the wall of the bucket near the base to fix a tube which is for the water going back to the pond
and make one more on the top of the Bucket on the Lid
Get some river Gravel, Bioballs, Ceramic Rings, and some sponge and some Plastic Mesh (Netlon)
Make Round cuts on the Netlon which will act as the separation wall between the filtration medium
First goes the Gravel, Next the Ceramic Rings, Next the Bio Balls and then the Sponge
Add a Powerhead to the bottom of the pond and bring the tube to the top of the bucket
and point the output tube back to the pond
Do a clever camouflaging of the pipes, you have a lovely waterfall which takes care of the aeration. |

Did you ever see a good pond with good quality koi fish? or atleast some good shubunkins ?
by a pond i mean atleast a very small 5000 liter one. pond fish are DIFFERENT. like Koi, shubunkin, comet goldfish, catfish, etc
you cant put a tiny tetra in a pond and expect it to look good or atleast find it.
watch some youtube videos of Koi ponds. |

the desire has again resurfaced
now that the repotting has been done at home and my pit still lying idle
decided on the following
1- 6ft length , 2.5 to 3 ft depth and about 3-4ft wide pond
2- going to be built by a mason
3- filteration will be a DIY with a bucket filltd with media and using submersible pump from SP road
4- plants will be put in pots
5- will be using green net to avoid direct sunlight and algae problems
my queries now
1- other than KOI what fish can i add
2- i dont want to spend too much time doing WC and all that , it should be self sustaining
any more tips the gurus can give will be great |

The size looks good. Whats the pump flow rate you considering? With you size you have mentioned it should hold around 1500 L of water.
If you are getting Kois most of the plants would be ruled out. I even tried Amazon and Vals but they get uprooted/eaten up in somedays. You can give a try to bog plants and Water Hyacinth. Floating plants like duckweed, water lettuce and salvinia will be chooped off as soon as you put them.
I would suggest keeping shubunkins and other Goldies if you want to keep plants. |
