 Hello  Guys,

I  have  a  20"x10"x10"  tank.  I  have  an  under  gravel  filter  connected  to  a  Boyu  -  U9900  and  a  Boyu  -  Submersible  filter  SP-1000A.  The  current  seems  to  be  a  bit  strong  in  the  tank  when  I  use  the  submersible  filter.  Could  anyone  tell  me  if  its  ok  to  attach  a  spray  bar  from  the  outlet  of  the  Submersible  filter  using  a  pipe.  Or  will  be  like  the  pressure  from  the  outlet  would  be  too  high  and  ruin  the  submersible  filter  in  the  process?  Or  is  there  any  other  way  to  work  this  around?  Very Happy

Hello  Guys,

 I  have  a  20"x10"x10"  tank.  I  have  an  under  gravel  filter  connected  to  a  Boyu  -  U9900  and  a  Boyu  -  Submersible  filter  SP-1000A.

You  have  a  Airpump  driven  UGF  and  A  300L/Hour  filter  running  in  a  32Litre  tank.  This  is  likely  to  cause  strong  currents

 Your  options  are

1,  Dump  the  UGF  and  use  the  power  filter  with  a  spray  bar
 2,  Dump  the  power  filter  and  use  the  UGF  {There  aren't  too  many  UGF  fans  around  here}
3,  Dump  the  filter  part  of  the  assembly  and  use  the  power  head  to  drive  the  UGF  with  or  without  a  spray  bar
4,  Dump  both  and  get  a  HOB  or  a  canister

All  these  depends  on  a  lot  of  factors  Planted  /  Non  planted,  What  kind  of  fish,  How  many  of  the  fish  are  there  etc  etc.
So  wanna  tell  us  those  details  ?  Smile

 Hi  Drug,

Thanks  for  the  details  but  I  couldnt  make  up  my  mind  how  to  go  about  it.  I  wouldnt  go  with  an  HOB  for  now.  because  I  just  bought  the  sub, ersible  filter  3  weeks  back.  Wouldnt  make  sense  just  dumping  it  for  now.  So  would  like  the  option  for  going  with  the  power  filter  and  spray  bar.  Could  you  tell  me  how  I  could  execute  this  option   Very Happy  And  you  guessed  it  right  .  Even  i  just  hate  the  UGF.  Its  so  uneasy  and  doesnt  make  sense  in  the  filtering  aspect.  Dunno  if  it  does  any  filtering  either.

Well  about  the  kind  of  fish  I  have  3  goldfish  (  The  regular  types),
4  goldfish  of  the  orange  and  white  mix
                                                                           1  shubhunkin
2  pearlscale  (  Though  1  of  the  pearlscale  is  quarantined  because  its  got  ich.  I  separated  him  from  the  main  tank  to  a  separate  tank)
                                                                            2  male  Guppies
                                                                              2  female  guppies

Well  I  did  add  a  few  plants  in  the  tank  initially.  But  the  glodfish  kept  pulling  them  out.  So  I  just  left  a  few  to  float  in  the  tank.

 Ooops
That  is  the  textbook  definition  of  overstocking  the  tank   Thumb Down

I  am  sure  that  someone  will  chew  your  head  out,  so  I  wouldn't  start  right  now.

Most  LFS  have  spray  bars  or  what  they  call  as  bubble  wands  that  fit  the  outlet  of  the  power  head.  They  usually  have  pinpoint  holes.  You  can  make  these  holes  bigger  with  a  heated  nail  or  a  drill  with  a  small  bit.  Moreover  the  holes  can  be  directed  to  the  glass  breakup  the  force  of  the  outflow  even  more

Below  are  the  pictures  of  a  spray  bar  at  work  on  the  outlet  of  my  CO2  reactor  driven  by  a  650lph  power-head.  I  know  that  it  looks  ugly  on  the  front  glass,  but  you  can  always  move  it  to  the  back  glass

You  can  also  see  all  the  algae  that  i  grow  painstakingly  Smile

 Hey  Drug,

Thats  a  really  cool  tank  that  you  have  got.  Have  you  been  in  this  hobby  for  long.  I  understand  that  I  have  overstocked  my  tank.  I  just  started  this  hobby  after  a  long  hiatus  last  month.  I  learnt  that  I  have  overstocked  my  tank  a  tab  bit  too  late.  So  I  am  getting  an  extra  bigger  tank  so  that  it  doesnt  get  over  stocked.  Now  in  your  experience  how  many  fish  should  be  retained  in  my  current  tank?  Also  did  you  make  that  spray  bar  yourself  or  did  you  get  it  from  an  LFS?  Wanted  your  guidance  on  that.  Wanted  to  learn  how  you  grow  aquatic  plants  in  your  tank.  I  cant  seem  to  get  the  right  guidance  for  that.  And  of  course  I  can  keep  them  in  my  current  goldfish  tank.  They  just  love  to  devour  anything  that  they  can  get  their  hands  on.

 Hi
Chennai  is  good  place  to  be  when  you  are  in  the  hobby.  I  understand  that  All  the  active  IAH  members  there  meet  up  quite  frequently.  It  would  be  best  if  you  can  hook  up  with  a  few  of  them  so  that  they  can  guide  you.  Lots  of  planted  tank  Guru's  in  Chennai  like  Venket,  Prem,  Ravi  etc.  You  can  pm  them  through  the  forum  to  get  in  touch  with  them.  All  of  them  are  helpful  people.

For  information  you  can  look  through  the  Aquatic  plants  and  Aquascaping  parts  of  the  forum.  There  is  a  three  part  article  by  Trevor  that  is  a  sticky  that  you  will  find  useful.

I  am  a  newbie  myself.  Been  keeping  fish  and  plants  for  an  year  and  a  half  now.

As  I  had  said  earlier  that  spray  bar  was  purchased  from  an  LFS  and  the  holes  were  enlarged  so  that  the  outflow  was  slower.

 Unni

I  have  never  kept  Goldfish  {except  for  the  first  week  in  the  hobby}.  So  I  am  not  qualified  to  advice  on  Goldfish  stocking  levels

As  far  as  I  know  goldfish  and  plants  don't  go  together  since  they  will  eat  and  pull  out  plants

 Go  to  an  electrical  shop.
They  sell  plastic  Piping  which  will  slide  over  the  mouth  of  your  Boyu.
Drill  the  holes  your  self.  Small  ones  to  start  with  and  larger  as  you  go  towards  the  end  of  the  tube.
Its  a  5  minute  job  to  hook  up  a  spray  bar.
 Have  fun.

 Hi  Ron,  Wave

Got  a  small  doubt.  Wouldnt  the  pressure  be  more  at  the  opp  end  of  pipe  away  from  pump?
If  so  small  at  extreme  and  larger  holes  at  pump  would  lead  uniform  spray.

 Thankyou.
