It  was  a  sudden  plan  to  visit  Mangalore  this  weekend  and  we  started  off  our  journey  from  Bangalore  on  Saturday(05/09/09).  Since  it  was  an  unplanned  tour  the  fish  collecting  material  was  minimal  and  our  basic  objective  was  to  help  Dad  with  some  work  in  Mangalore.  Nevertheless,  I  thought  the  best  idea  would  be  to  do  some  collecting  on  our  way  back  to  Bangalore.   Thumbs Up

The  first  potential  spot  en  route  to  Sakleshpur   Very Happy

On  closer  inspection  spotted  a  lot  of  Aplocheilus  sp.  swimming  on  the  surface  recklessly.  Even  though  to  get  back  to  Bangalore  it  was  2  days  away  I  dipped  the  net  to  bag  4  of  them.  It  started  pouring  heavily  so  could  not  click  any  pics  there,  but  here  is  one  once  I've  got  back.  ID  needed

Nature  at  its  best  on  the  way  to  Mangalore

After  finishing  my  work  in  Mangalore  we  began  our  journey  back  to  Bangalore  on  Monday(07/09/09)  but  this  time  around  we  chose  to  return  via  Madikeri(Coorg)  because  the  Shirdi  Ghat  road  was  closed  and  an  alternate  road  had  a  terrible  roadblock.

The  second  spot  around  30  km  from  Mangalore

Spotted  a  few  Barbs  and  Danios  I  think,  but  was  able  to  net  only  these  quite  easily

 ID  needed

 Me  on  the  go!!

A  few  shrimps  too,  this  one  has  Red  claws  and  seems  a  Macrobachium  sp.  ID  needed

 The  catch

We  headed  off  closer  and  closer  to  Madikeri  and  were  treated  by  some  really  good  weather  unlike  Mangalore  where  it  was  raining  time  and  again

There  were  plenty  of  "potential"  collecting  spots  but  they  would  hold  good  only  in  Summer  times   Sad

The  next  spot:  a  small  canal  passage  where  the  water  flow  was  slower

 Netted  a  lone  Puntius  melanampyx

A  surprise  catch,  an  eel  juvenile  most  probably  Mastacembelus  sp.  Sorry  for  the  pic,  the  juvenile  is  about  1  inch  only  and  slightly  reddish  in  colour.

Crossing  Madikeri,  we  knew  that  there  would  be  plenty  of  collecting  spots  en  route  to  Srirangapatna,  but  our  worry  was  it  was  already  1645  hrs  and  our  hopes  of  catching  a  few  more  sp.  could  be  dashed!   Sad

Nevertheless,  we  found  this  next  spot  near  Hunsur  where  plenty  of  Barbs  were  spotted

 The  Sp.  collected  were:

 Puntius  conchonius

 Puntius  bimaculatus

L.thermalis  ,  the  most  abundant  loach

Again  a  surprise  catch  as  it  was  difficult  to  net  fish  there,  a  Glossogobius  giuris

ID  needed  on  this,  know  this  as  "Pencil  fish"   Very Happy

 The  fish  bagged

It  was  getting  dark  and  we  were  heading  towards  Srirangapatna.  Even  in  the  dark  I  wanted  to  cast  my  net  maybe  to  catch  any  fish  by  surprise  as  I  have  always  felt  fish  collecting  at  night  is  easier  around  banks  as  the  fish  are  less  "aware"  of  the  lurking  danger

Initially  netted  a  few  Garras,  Guppies,  Tilapia,  L.thermalis  and  lots  of  Tadpoles.  With  the  Tadpoles  i  knew  I  have  a  delicious  dinner  for  my  Channa  population  at  home.     Chuckle

The  next  catch  was  like  "Icing  on  the  Cake"  for  me  ,  I  scraped  the  net  through  the  sand  hidden  in  the  gaps  near  the  shore  stones  to  find  my  favourite  Native  fish,  the  Snakehead!!   Cheering

 Channa  Gachua  juvie

 The  catch  at  night!

Content  and  pretty  excited  we  headed  back  to  Bangalore  swiftly...   Smile

Thanks  to  my  "dude"  cousin  bro  who  helped  me  out  with  packing  and  the  pictures,  most  are  clicked  by  him.   Very Happy

Cheers  to  Native  fish  and  the  never  ending  curiosity  attached  with  them!!     Thumb Up

Hey  Dude  -  Looks  like  a  fun  filled  trip,  this  is  the  best  time  to  travel  the  Madikeri  Mangalore  route,  as  you  put  it  you  will  find  "Nature  at  its  best"

 Didnt  Maaz  come  along?

Indeed  it  is  the  best  time  to  visit  that  place!   Very Happy

Maaz  did  not  come  along,  he  had  work  at  college...  And  by  the  way  the  only  regret  I  have  is  that  i  could  not  visit  your  farm  in  Mangalore,  this  trip  was  so  disorganized  yaar!   Sad
