Yesterday  was  a  very  sad  day  for  me,  when  I  got  back  home  one  of  my  discus  tank  was  in  a  real  bad  shape.

Background  :  I  have  9  full  grown  discus  in  my  5  feet  tank  and  I  do  a  water  change  every  night  25%  with  out  fail.  I  also  have  a  2217  canister  which  has  been  running  and  3  oxygen  pumps  and  2  carbon  filters  also  running  in  the  same  tank,  I  feed  the  fish  BH  and  Tetra  bits  and  bio  gold.  Twice  a  day.

Action:  When  I  got  back  home  yesterday  I  was  in  a  real  shock  my  discus  were  all  at  the  top  of  the  water  edge  and  my  air  pump  was  not  working  at  all  the  2217  was  working  .  I  immediately  got  my  stand  by  air  pumps  and  started  them   and  also  did  a  25%  wc  unfortunately  I  lost  one  of  my  best  looking  discus  I  am  still  trying  to  wonder  what  could  have  killed  him?

I  am  little  upset  but  I  guess  life  goes  one

 His  snap  attached

 Regards,

 Clive

Sad  to  hear  about  you  fish,
I  know  it  is  heartbreaking...How  are  the  other  fish  doing?
I  would  also  like  to  learn  why  you  are  using  2  carbon  filters  ?
 Or  whats  their  intended  use?

I  am  still  trying  to  wonder  what  could  have  killed  him?
 Lack  of  Oxygen..?  Confused

All  your  discus  would  need  would  be  a  heater  and  two  sponge  filters  driven  by  an  air  pump.  And  step  up  your  water  change  to  95  percent  everyday.  Or  better  still,  do  two  50  percent  water  changes  everyday.

Activated  carbon  filtration  in  a  discus  tank  can  cause  Hole  in  The  Head  disease  for  discus.  And  regarding  your  cannister  filter,  discus  definitely  dont  appreciate  a  strong  current  in  the  tank.

At  least  now  switch  to  this  regime,  and  your  other  fishes  will  be  happy.

 Dear  all,

my  tank  size  is  5  feet  *18*22  I  have  always  had  a  2217  since  I  started  keping  discus,

when  i  meant  carbon  filter  i  ment  the  black  sponge  filter  since  my  tank  size  is  big  i  have  these  at  both  the  tank  ends  the  2217  flow  is  not  that  strong  since  the  tank  size  is  big  and  my  fish  like  the  water  with  a  little  currrent.

 thanks.

Sorry  to  hear  about  your  loss.

I  would  suggest  you  do  a  50  percent  water  change  30  minutes  after  feeding  your  fish.  If  you  can  do  this  after  both  the  feeds,  thats  the  best  you  can  do  for  your  fishes.

I  too  feel  that  caniisters  and  carbon  filters  are  unnecessary  for  a  discus  tank.

If  you  are  talking  about  grown  up  discus,  they  might  pair  up  and  lay,  and  I  am  sure  you  wouldnt  want  high  water  movement  in  the  tank  for  obvious  reasons.

If  two  water  changes  are  not  feasible,  go  ahead  with  99  percent  water  change  daily  and  your  fishes  will  be  happy  for  sure.

I  had  a  batch  of  juveniles  that  I  raised  sometime  ago.  Pumped  them  up  with  frozen  artemia,  frozen  brineshrimp,  live  bloodworms,  beefheart  and  tetrabits,  and  99  percent  water  changes  thrice  a  day.  Used  to  feed  beefheart  in  the  morning,  do  a  water  change  after  an  hour.  After  sometime  a  feed  of  frozen  artemia.  Then  after  about  2  hours  a  feed  of  live  bloodworms.  Then  a  water  change  after  an  hour.  Then  frozen  brineshrimp,  followed  by  Tetrabits  after  sometime.  Then  a  water  change  and  light  off  after  an  hour!

They  ate  like  pigs  and  grew  like  crazy!

And  yeah,  I  was  absolutely  jobless  then!   ROFL

my  tank  size  is  5  feet  *18*22  I  have  always  had  a  2217  since  I  started  keeping  discus,

Yeah  This  is  fine,  even  I  use  a  2217  in  my  4ftr,  but  they  are  all  tall  tanks.  I  have  also  used  2  2217's  at  once,
I  just  don't  use  the  spray  bar  and  point  the  flow  to  the  tank  wall  so  the  water  is  not  turbulent,
and  yet  I  have  higher  turn  over  rate  for  Filtration,  this  was  when  my  Discus  tank  was  planted.
If  by  carbon  filter  you  mean  2  air  driven  sponge  filters  then  you  are  on  the  right  track,
I  was  just  curious  as  to  why  you  were  using  Carbon  filters,  and  what  type  they  were  as  they  are  generally  not  recommended.

I  have  two  tanks  of  Discus  and  I  am  have  a  nice  growth  rate  and  health  of  my  Discus.

 1.  6ft  X  1.5ft  X   2ft,  In  this  tank  i  use  Atman  Canister  Filter  CF-1200(I  removed  carbon  replaced  by  Ciramic  rings)  and
2  jumbo  sized  air  driven  sponge  filters.  I  have  10  young  Discus(  about  5-6  inches  )  in  this  tank.
 2.  3ft  X  1.5ft  X  2ft,   In  this  tank  i  use  only  a  single  jumbo  size  sponge  filter.  I  have  6  young  adult  discus  in  this  tank.

All  the  tanks  are  BB.  I  feed  them  3  times  a  day,  at  morning  10am.  i  give  them  Tetra  Bits,  then  at  4  pm  i  give  them  Hikari  Discus  Bio-gold  and  at  10  pm  i  give  them  BHM.  After  1  hr  of  feeding  BHM  I  do  a  75-80%  WC  daily.  I  dont  feed  any  of  my  Discus  in  Friday.  I  dont  know  why  but  i  feel  that  this  is  not  bad  for  them.  I  know  this  is  not  logical.  But  i  feel  that.  What  do  you  think  guys?

Clive,  if  you  are  talking  about  power  filter  then  its  bad  but  if  it  is  sponge  filter  then  is  ok  I  strongly  agree  with  Nanu.  Shiva  always  told  me  not  have  any  power  filter  in  Discus  tank.  Btw  Nanu  i  am  very  inspired  by  your  Discus  breeding  and  your  thread  of  Breeding  Discus  is  my  favourite  thread  of  this  forum.  Thanks  friend.  Clapping

 Thanks,

 Dear  All,

Thanks  for  sharing  the  wounderful  information

well  after  doing  some  research  i  reached  a  conclusion  that  my  discus  died  due  to  less  of  Oxygen  in  the  tank.

I  realised  that  the  oxygen  pump  stopped  working  since  9.30  in  the  morning  that  was  after  I  left  for  work.

Even  though  the  2217  was  working  the  flow  pipe  is  always  under  water.

well  about  2217  being  used  in  my  tank  Guys  I  have  had  this  filter  running  since  the  time  i  have  been  keeping  discus.

well  i  do  not  have  any  power  filter  in  my  tank  at  all

Yes  I  do  have  two  black  sponge  filters  at  the  two  ends  of  my  tank  and  i  have  two  seprate  pipes  that  pump  oxygen  into  the  tank  through  a  air  pump  and  air  stone.

Well  that  day  unfortunately  all  3  pumps  stop  working  and  only  the  2217  was  working  but  since  that  exit  pipe  was  inside  the  water  it  did  not  help  to  generate  the  necessary  oxygen  so  this  caused  a  complete  mess  and  my  discus  started  comming  to  the  surface  of   the  water  to  take  in  air.

well  about  the  water  change  I  always  did  a  75%  wc  every  day  but  due  to  monsoons  i  have  reduced  the  same  to  only  25  %  that  is  also  i  first  feed  them  at  8.00pm  and  then  at  10.30Pm  I  do  a  wc

once  again  thanks  for  the  support

 regards,

 Clive

Sponge  filters  are  always  good  for  discus  tank  ,  especially  when  you  feed  animal  hearts  .

 Clive,

Had  2217  outlet  been  not  submersed  you  could  have  saved  its  life.
You  cant  really  rely  on  Airpumps  (specially  chinese  make)  running  24/7  as  its  internal  spares  may  worn  out  after  certain  period  of  time.
