 @Alistair
Perhaps  you  didn't  get  the  point  of  the  pic.  Lenses  just  show  that  there  are  canon  bodies  behind  each  one  of  them.  [indicating  popularity]
Obviously  I  am  not  asking  OP  to  go  out  and  buy  a  high  end  L  series  lens  when  he  is  looking  for  an  entry  level  body.

Canon  has  better  performance  than  Nikon  at  high  ISO......Please  check  out  once  more  I  think  you  are  making  a  mistake.  Nikon  has  always  reduced  the  price  of  camera  bodies  by  migrating  the  same  sensor  from  one  body  to  another,  The  12MP  CMOS  Sensor  was  first  fitted  to  the  D300  body  then  to  the  D90  and  now  its  in  the  D5000  so  both  D5000  and  the  D90  has  its  origin  from  the  D300.Its  your  budget  and  type  of  usage  that  will  decide  which  one  you  want  to  go  for.
Nikon  did  the  same  thing  with  its  6MP  CCD  Sensor  ,  it  was  first  found  in  D100  then  D70/D70s  and  then  to  D40.

Last  few  D40  and  D60  still  exists  in  the  market  at  a  low  price  compared  to  D3000  and  D5000.  If  your  budget  is  limited  than  buying  a  D40  will  be  a  wise  decision.

Ken  Rockwell's   judgement  on  camera  bodies  and  lenses  are  very  contradictory,  you  can  visit  the  dpreview  which  gives  a  very  close  to  perfect  reviews  of  camera  bodies  and  several  Nikkor  Lenses.

Lets  wait  for  the  12MP  Full  Frame  sensor  to  get  into  a  D40/D60  like  body  and  make  FF  cameras  more  affordable  for  the  masses.
   Thumb Up

   Thumb Up[/quote]

Nikon  D5000  is  a  step  down  vertion  of  D90,  not  D300.   Smile  Cannon  has  a  better  performance  when  high  ISO  is  used  compared  to  Nikon,  Said  that  I  use  Nikon  cameras   only.  D40  is  no  more  under  production  I  think  D60  replaced  D40X  which  replased  D40  few  years  ago.  Now  D5000  is  a  kind  of  replacement  for  D60.   Smile

Here  is  a  site  for  very  simple  review  of  D  series  camera.

 http://www.kenrockwell.com/nikon/d5000.htm

 Hope  it  helps.

But  by  finding  more  Canon  users  dont  make  anyone  believe  that  Canon  makes  better  Cameras  than  Nikon.  ALPA  of  Switzerland  made  some  of  the  finest  35mm  Cameras  far  superior  than  the  Nikons  and  Canons  but  how  many  of  us  even  know  of  it  or  have  used  it  ,  but  does  that  make  ALPA  an  inferior  one.

Canon  is  a  much  larger  Company  with  more  aggresive  marketing  than  Nikon  and  hence  the  popularity.  Nikon  is  a  much  smaller  focused  company  with  quality  product.  If  you  get  down  the  history  of  35mm  Japanese  Rangefinder   Cameras  then  you  will  find  that  the  first  Canon  (known  as  Kwanon)  Cameras  had  most  lenses  and  body  parts  made  by  Nikon.  Chuckle

^I  never  said  canon  cameras  were  better  than  Nikon.  :S

And  no  company  becomes  that  popular  ONLY  for  marketing.

And  just  an  interesting  FYI,  Just  found  out  that  most  Nikons  use  sensors  build  by  Sony.

but  why  did  you  post  a  pic  with  canon  users........  what  did  you  want  to  prove  ?
   Smile
I  have  never  said  Canon  makes  inferior  bodies,  But  Nikon  does  the  job  much  better.
Marketing  does  help  large  corporation  to  get  market  leadership  or  else  no  point  in  wasting  money  on  marketing.
I  have  never  said  Canon  has  become  more  popular  ONLY  for  marketing  but  it  helps  them  in  getting  market  leadership.

^  pic  was  just  to  say  that  Canons  are  popular,  not  just  for  little  girls.

And  regarding  marketing  behavior,  I  could  just  as  well  state  that  Nikon  is  also  equally  aggressive,  It  is  not  a  leader  cause  it  refuses  to  price  their  products  competitively  and  off  late,  quality  control  issues  with  their  dslr  lineup  [D5000  recalls  etc].

And  why  do  people  go  into  Canon  Vs  Nikon,  it  is  pointless,  No  one  is  buying  the  whole  damn  corporation  here,   just  products.

And  I  still  stand  by  what  I  said;  for  its  price  Nothing,  as  of  today,  compares  to  EOS  500D.

OMG  ,  that  line  still  coming  back  on  this  thread.  Sorry,  Harsh.
   ROFL   ROFL

 Another  option  for  Arvind  .
Buy  the  D40/D40x.  Its  cheap  (well  under  half  your  budget  in  the  grey  market).  Take  it  without  the  kit  lens  -  that  saves  another  couple  of  grand.
Buy  the  best  lens  you  can  get  for  the  rest  of  your  budget  -  the  Nikon  18-200  -  is  a  good  option.  I  have  the  Sigma  28-135  and  its  my  only  lens.
I  have  my  eye  on  other  lenses  but  this  serves  my  needs  for  the  moment.

Just  an  OffTopic  question  but  still  related
Are  the  cameras  from  grey  market  reliable  ?
If  yes,  who  could  be  a  reliable  seller  in  and   around  Mumbai  ?

Alpha  Maket  (Vile-Parle)  is  one  popular  hub  for  electronics  &  gadget  freaks  in  Mumbai.
Heera-Panna  (Tardeo)  is  another  favorite  spot  so  the  classical  Manish  Market  at  CST.

Buyers  buy  products  at  own  jeopardy.  Never  got  camera,  but  all  my  mobiles  were  purchased  at  Grey  Market  right  from  the  start.
IMO  you  get  same  quality  product  there  just  without  bill  &  warranty.

Ya  right...  but  be  careful  at  heera-panna,  I  have  known  some  people  say  that  lenses  are  dazed  off  onse  or  just  plain  duplicates...  best  would  be  going  to  apro  shop  who  sells  these  gizmos  with  a  warranty..  but  gosh  those  funnels...  Rock On
